Cage Titans “Vengeance” Review

by Rick ~ April 4th, 2011

We missed the Cage Titans “Vengeance” event last week, but Jeremy Reipold reviewed the event for his website, and said we could share his review here as well.

Here is Jeremy’s review:

On Saturday April 1, 2011, myself and fellow WMMMA photog/author/siko Joe Leonard made our way out to Boston to cover the fights. This show was right in the city, at the Local 103 IBEW building, and we made it in without a hitch.

As always the promoter Mr. Mike Polvere had us on the list, and we grabbed our press passes and made it into the venue a little early to check the place out. It was a cool set up, with vendors and gear companies in the lobby. Representing their wares, were Boston Brawler, Prime Athletics, Get Punched, BattleGrounds Fight Gear, a place that sells framed poster size pictures of the Boston sports teams, and a booth for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

CFX – Review

by Old School ~ March 13th, 2011

Review by Grant Tremelling:

We return to the Jungleplex in Plymouth Massachusetts for our next installment of Cage Fighting Extreme.  Long night of fights, everyone made weight so no fights were cancelled.  For the sake of battery life on the laptop I did detailed play-by-play only for pro fights.  The fights started around 6:15 and went to 11:20.

Kyle Mitchell of CNYMMA VS Marlon Reis of Fenix Fight Club at 170

Marlon Via Split decision

Joel Deandrade team overkill vs. pete marinelli of bishops at 170

Pete marinelli via 1st round stoppage due to strikes at 1:21 of the first

Billy Bonnell Of Muhan Martial Arts vs. David Worman of ABD MMA at 175

David Worman via stoppage at :21 of rnd 1

Pat Walsh of wai Kru Vs, Josh Remer of USMMA at MHW

Pat Walsh via unanimous decision

Fran Collins of Fight Factory vs. mike Arruda of Gilletts MMA at 195

Fran Collins VIA guillotine at 18 seconds of the first round

Scott Morse of Team Overkill vs. Vaughn Lahr of the Pound 185

Scott via Armbar at 1:26 of the first

Kevin Yee of CCFA Shannon Soares of Gillettes at 160

Kevin Yee via Unanimous decision

Richard white of cnymma vs bobby Flynn of pro elite

Richard White via RNC at the bell of the first round

Adam Levasseur vs Joe Cronin ABD MMA 190

Joe Cronin Via armbar in the 2nd

Randy Smith CNYMMA vs Josh Diekmann Burells MMA hwt

The men meet in the center with randy being the aggressor early throws a 3 punch combo but josh counters with a stiff cross that drops him.  He pounces and throws more punches for the finish.

Winner via ref stoppage at :12 of rnd 1

Katy Merrill of Wai Kru vs Kaline Medeiros of Gillettes 120

Kaline looks to have a bit of a size advantage.  The girls touch gloves and Katy begins her standup efforts early with a 1-2 kick combo with the kick landing hard.  Kaline goes for a guillotine and gets taken down.  Kaline escapes after a minute on the fence, she goes for a takedown and Katy grabs her head and jumps guard for the guillotine.  Kaline fights it off for 20 seconds or so before she is forced to tap.

Winner Katy Merrill at 1:51 via Guillotine

Robbie Roberts of the Factory vs Mike Batholomew Underdog 185

Robbie begins early with  a heavy kick to the body, they are exchanging but not much is landing clean.  Mike drives Robbie into the cage Robbie spinds him into the cage and starts working elbows and knees.  Robbie eventually gets a takedown and lands in mikes half guard.  Mike is able to trap an arm can roll into robbies full guard.  Mike is working ground and pound without too much succsess and Robbie is working submissions.

Rnd 2.

Mike starts by backing Robbie into the cage.  He lands a huge right that drops Robbie and I think I saw him go out for a second, he is able to regain his senses before mike can do do much damage and pulls guard.  Mike isn’t doing a lot of the guard and uses a failed sweep to pass to side control.  Robbie is able to stand and goes for a hip toss that mike reverses to get him to the mat again.  Mike isn’t that active from the top but he is doing a great job of controlling Robbie.  He goes for an Americana and Robbie is able to get up.  Mike gives Robbie some room and Robbie lands a huuge kick to the groin as mike returns with a massive cross that rocked Robbie, the reff stopps in to give mike time for the strike to the groin as mike lays down to try to shake it off.  After 3 minutes they are ready to go.  Robbie is jabbing to keep his distance mike lands a few light crosses.  They clinch on the cage and then are restarted in the middle, they trade and both take huge blows, Mike lands a nice uppercut hook jab and Robbie a few wild strikes. Robbie presses through the punches to land another 1-2 to end the round.

Rnd 3

The come right out and start banging with Robbie landing a kick and mike landing a few light strikes.  Robbie is able to get ahold of mike and push him into the cage.  He is trying to work knee’s but without much succsess.  Mike is starting to look real tired and Robbie gets a slow takedown against the fence and then full mount.  Mike is able to get half guard and Robbie is staying tight on top.  Mike gets guard and Robbie gets him to the fence, the reff stands them up and they exchange with mike landing a clean punch.  Both men look exhausted now Robbie starts throwing knee’s and kicks in combinations that look good but the round ends soon after.

Winner via Split decision Robbie Roberts

Tough fight to call, a lot of back and forth, I could have gone either way with it.

Matt Cascio of team crush vs Greg Mendes mendes mma 150

I was in the bathroom during this fight I apologize, Matt cascio won via submission early in the first.

Evan Valez Bombsquad vs Josh Raymond of b and f boxing 135

Both men come out playing with footwork, josh looking to box and evan looking to kick.  A minute of movement passes before evan lands a light 1-2 and a head kick.  Josh is having a hard time finding his range and evan is happy to chop away at his legs whenever he tests the range, Evan gets a slick takedown but is unable to pass before josh can take guard.  Evan is on his feet in josh’s guard launding decent gnp with a few good elbows and straight punches.  Round ends As josh stands you can see one of the elbows opened a gigantic cut.

Rnd 2.

Josh is trying to find his range again for a while then evan gets a tight low single and whips him 3 times before he can drag him down for the takedown.  Evan works some gnp but nothing huge, the ref stands it up after a minute.  Josh’s eye is starting to look bad.  Evan gets a good takedown to finish the round.

Rnd3

Josh is clearly afraid of the takedown and evan occasional kick and is having trouble closing the distance.  jEvan gets a little frustrated and pulls off an awkward combination but lands 2 wild blows at the end of the combination.  They dance around each other for another 2 minutes.  Evan is able to corner josh and get a huge takedown to end the round.

Winner via Unanimous decision Evan Valez

Nick Malkowski vs Frank Sforza of sssf 145

Frank gets an early single but nick is able to stand, as soon as he does frank gets a double and nick pulls guard.  Frank is able to pass and then gets full mount.  Frank lands a lot of unanswered punches to the ribs.  Nick lets and arm get in front of his head and frank is able to get a head and arm choke, its tight and he steps over to the same side for the finish.

Winner via submission at 2:46 in rnd 1

Wade Therrien of JBA vs Bobby Alves gillettes mma hwt

After a bit of work wade is able to get a takedown. Bobby is doing a good job of defending off his back out of half guard but wade is able to get the occasional strike in.  Wade starts pounding away as soon as he gets some room and is able to get a quick stoppage.

Winner via verbal tap at 2:45 of rnd 1

Dan Mcguane of fight factory vs. Joe Lamoreaux sssf 197

Dan comes out and is the first to throw strikes, joe immediately starts looking for a takedown.  Dan is able to get him to the cage Joe almost gets a takedown but dan grabs the fence, the ref docks him a point and they restart.  Dan lands a big leg kick and joe looks for another takedown.  Dan is doing a great job fighting off the cage against the takedown.  Joe lands the occasional knee but otherwise cant do much with the position.  The round ends.

Rnd 2

Dans lands a strong leg kick and again slopy pushes to the cage for a takedown.  He gets a big takedown but dan is right back up.  Joe is pressing dan against the cage again looking for a takedown.  The ref seperates them and dan lands two big leg kicks.  Sloppy goes for a takedown and dan is able to tie up a head and arm and is looking for an anaconda.  Joe is able to break free and is leaning against the fence on dan again.  Sloppy tries to force a takedown and dan lands on top in mount.  Dan postures and is able to posture and land a few punches.  He lands 2 vicious elbows and then another 2 more before the round ends.

Rnd 3

The round starts with dan landing another leg kick and sloppy again muscling him to the cage.  After a minute or so dna is able to roll him off the cage and lands a big knee before being rolled back into the cage as joe looks for another takedown.  The ref seperates them and dan lands a good 1-2-2 that rocks sloppy who then clinches and pushes dan to the cage again.

Winner is Dan mcguane via UD

Jerry Spiegel vs. Roger Bracket Lakeville mma 185

This round starts with roger pushing jerry into the cage to get the eventual takedown.  And then mount.  Jerry is able to stand up but gets taken down and they remain in his guard for the rest of the round.

Rnd2

Jerry gets an early takedown and moves into mount. There are a bunch of transitions but Jerry never looses top control and eventually locks up an armbar at 2:57.

Winner via Armbar Jerry Spiegel at 2:57 of rnd 2.

Rene Nazarre bombsquad vs. jeff Anderson of B and F boxing 155

Rene comes out getting the better of the standup, landing a combination or two before getting a takedown and mount against the fence.  During a scramble rene is able to get both hooks in and finishes the RNC.

Winner Rene Nazarre Via RNC at 2;06 of round 1

Dave Lachapelle sssf vs Chris Cole abd mma 135

First I think it is worth mentioning dave looks like a monster, and I remember chris fighting well last time I saw him so I am ready for a war.  Dave is pushing the pace from the start throwing huge rights, none land but it gets Chris’s attention, dave looks to shoot and chris throws a big flying knee that lands flush on the side of dave’s face.  Dave shakes it off quickly and shoots for a perfect takedown and lands in chris’s guard.  They jockey for position for a few seconds than dave postures and throws 2 monster rights that land flush on chris’s face, chris rolls to protect himself and dave lands 2 more for the stoppage.

Winner via Stoppage is Dave Lachapelle at 2:10 of the first.

Its worth noting that after dave stood up you could see a big knot on the cheekbone/jawbone from the knee, I would not be surprised if something broke but either way I was impressed by the way he didn’t let it phase him.

Steve Skrzat vs Mark Griffin bishops 205

Steve walks out looking massive, and mark comes out the obvious crowd favorite.  They exchange a few punches but nothing lands so Mark ties up.  He is able to get a big slam on steve but after 10 seconds steve is back up.  Mark gets another huge slam into side control and starts elbowing Steve’s ribs.  Steve is able to work out again and gets taken down again but not as hard.  This looks absolutely exhausting and steve doesn’t seem to have an answer for mark’s takedowns in the corner.  He is able to get up again before suffering another huge slam.  He is working to stand again but this time mark is able to take his back and get both hooks in.  He Postures up after flattening steve out and starts to pound away at the sides of his head, steve rolls over but continues to take a lot of punishment now from the mount.  After another 5-10 seconds of this the ref steps in and stops the fight at 4:09 of the first.

Winner via Ref Stoppage is Mark Griffin at 4:09 of the first.

REALITY FIGHTING @ MOHEGAN SUN REVIEW

by Old School ~ February 28th, 2011

REALITY FIGHTING @ MOHEGAN SUN REVIEW
From: Old School

Kipp Kollar, Joe Cuff, and the folks at Reality Fighting showed why they were once the premier MMA organization in the northeast, and may very well arrive back there again some time soon!!! On Saturday, February 27, 2011, in Uncasville, CT., they hosted one of the most exciting fight cards in memory, including three title fights and at one other (Proctor/Fama), any of which would normally headline an evening of MMA action!! The results included a crowd that Mohegan Sun officials estimated at 6,000. (I was told by one Mohegan Sun official that more than 5,000 tickets were sold in advance!) That’s right, fight fans, when you put together a line up of quality fights and you get the word out, the fight world will beat a hasty path to your door! This may be the largest crowd ever assembled for an MMA event in New England, other that UFC 118 in Boston!

Consider this: The Reality Fighting people did all this while putting on a NAGA event on the same weekend in Dallas, TX.

The original fight card was trimmed to seven pro fights after the medicals and weigh-ins. We will see five non-title fights with three five minute rounds and two title fights with five five minute rounds. One of the non-title fights was to be for the Welter Weight Title, but neither the defending belt holder nor the challenger was able make weight. Thus, the fight was changed to non-title status.

On to the fights…….

Fight # 1
135 lb pro (3×5)
Johnny Lopez vs. Jeff Haddad

Round 1: Haddad is quite a bit taller, and seems to be willing to use that reach advantage well. The fighters are circling cautiously, but Jeff is measuring the jab. Finding his range, he drops Lopez with a quick punch about a minute into the round, but Lopez is right back up. Lopez lands some nice combinations with hands, but Haddad is answering with elbows and knees. Haddad is landing well as the round progresses, and Lopez is bleeding a bit! Lopez is again dropped but again gets right back up. The round continues with Haddad landing the better combinations while Lopez does land some decent kicks.
Old School score: Haddad 10-9

Round 2: Lopez starts the second frame with a nice punch combination to a clinch, but Haddad pushes and kicks his way out. Haddad grabs a quick takedown and some ground and pound and Lopez gets back to his feet! Haddad clinches and drives some big knees to the mid section, forcing the fight to the ground. Now we see Haddad is landing some serious G&P with punches, elbows, and knees. Lopez is bleeding real bad and the G&P continues. Lopez is having a hard time defending himself. Lopez stands and eats a shin kick to the face as the round ends! OUCH!!!
Old School score: Haddad 10-8

Johnny Lopez is busted up pretty bad and the fight is called at the end of round 2. This fight was two real tough and gritty guys, but Haddad was just the better of the two tonight!
Winner by TKO @ end of round 2: Jeff Haddad

There was so much blood in the cage that promoter Kipp is calling for more towels as the Mohegan Sun DNA removal crew preps the cage for the next fight!!! Good stoppage, but about ten punches and one face kick too late!!

Fight # 2
155 lb pro (3×5)
Leroy Derricott vs. Jim Collins
Collins has Joe Lauzon in his corner

Round 1: The boys start the fight with a glove tap and they clinch it up quick, throw some knees, and separate. Leroy lands a leg kick, clinches, and separates. Collins lands some nice body shots and a scramble to the ground finds Collins on top landing some strikes. The fight goes back to the feet and Collins lands a nice left hook to the head that drops Leroy. Collins begins to unload G&P with a huge number of punches that are finding a home on Leroy’s face and head. I think that ref Dan Miragliotta should stop it, but he doesn’t, so the pounding continues until Leroy rolls over and Collins locks in a RNC for the tap!!!
Winner by TKO @ 4:19 round 1: Jim Collins

Leroy Derricott is down and out for a long time, being attended to by the Medical Staff. He took a lot of shots and it appeared to me that the ref let this one go too long. This was a nice win for Collins against a tough opponent. The DNA removal crew is called, again, into action, and Kipp calls for more towels. Leroy does eventually walk out on his own!!!

Fight # 3
Heavy weight pro (3×5)
Eric Bedard vs. Brian Kononchik
Bedard is the much larger of the two heavy weights

Round 1: Both fighters come out swinging, and Eric lands a big shot that he follows up with a takedown, adding some G&P. Bedard stays on top, with good wrestling control, and continues to strike. Back on the feet, Brian is cut and bleeding. Bedard scores with a big slam and secures top mount position, landing some nice G&P. The ref has seen enough and puts an end to the beating, maybe because there aren’t enough towels!!!
Winner by TKO @ 2:10 round 1: Eric Bedard

Eric Bedard showed some nice punching power and good ground control in his MMA pro debut!!! The Mohegan Sun DNA removal service is again hard at work! I don’t think I can ever remember three such bloody fights to start off a fight night!

Fight # 4
155 lb pro (3×5)
Eric Fama vs. Joe Proctor

Joe Proctor is coming off the only loss of his career. He is jacked up and serious as all get out as he enters the cage. He is dressed in bad attitude, highlighted with Joe Lauzon as a corner man. Eric Fama, the local hero, enters the cage to a huge welcoming roar from the Connecticut crowd, “FAMA, FAMA, FAMA”

Round 1: The two clinch early and Proctor locks in a standing guillotine, but Fama pulls out. They resume by standing toe to toe and putting on a nice striking display. Fama catches a kick by Proctor and throws an overhand right followed by a takedown, landing in top of guard. Fama works out of guard and drops some nice punches and knees, and the crowd chants “FAMA, FAMA, FAMA”. Back on the feet, Proctor scores with knees followed by a takedown of his own, and he eventually works to mount. Proctor seems to be having a conversation with corner Joe Lauzon, and then he goes for another guillotine.
Fama pulls out of this as well and stands up and walks away, forcing Proctor to stand, and the crowd approves, “FAMA, FAMA, FAMA”. Proctor lands some nice shots as the round ends!!!
Old School score: Proctor 10-9

Round 2: The crowd is pumped for the start of round two, “FAMA, FAMA, FAMA”. The fighters start the second round swinging big, but Proctor lands a sweet kick to the family jewels of the home town fighter… Fama takes the time to recover and the action resumes. These boys are really striking well, both giving and taking hands and feet! Proctor locks in yet another standing guillotine and presses Fama to the cage, and Fama is forced to tap out…
“PROCTOR, PROCTOR, PROCTOR”
Winner by submission to guillotine @ 3:22 round 2: Joe Proctor

This was a big win for Joe Proctor as he showed his mettle after suffering his only loss in his last fight. The mark of a fighter (and a man) is measured in how he deals with adversity. Eric Fama showed great skill and heart as well… No shame here my friend. This is Fight of the Night so far!

Intermission
During the requisite fifteen minute intermission, which never lasts fifteen minutes, I ran into my newest favorite feel-good story of the fight game, Eric Tseronis. If you don’t remember Eric, he is the former couch spud who, after the tragic death of his girlfriend three years ago, dragged his 350 + pound body into the gym at Team Burgess, Manchvegas, NH. His three high school pals, Lamotte and Scheiding and McQuaid, helped him cut his total body mass in half, and in December last year, he won his first MMA fight at 170 lbs!!! Eric looks great and is looking to fight again in April of this year! It’s great to see you again, Eric. Good luck in all that you do…

Fight # 5
185 lb Title Fight (5×5)
Alexandre “Vaca” Moreno vs Jeff “Scary Nickname” Nader

Moreno is one of the finest Bjj grapplers in the nation. I know that Nader has trained specifically for this opponent for the ten week training camp! Nader is the defending title holder.

Round 1: The two circle cautiously…not much happening as they get a feel for the distance. Nader throws a quick right that lands and Moreno shakes it off. Moreno shoots for a takedown that Nader fights off, but Vaca eventually earns the takedown. Nader pulls guard and begins firing elbows from the bottom. Nader sweeps to gain top control and Vaca locks in an arm bar for the quick tap, slick as a cup of custard. WOW!!!
Winner by submission due to arm bar @ 1:26 round 1: Alexandre “Vaca” Moreno

Scary Nickname was in the best shape possible for this fight. He trained specifically for this guy, for this situation, and he is a top 185er. Vaca just looked to be that good tonight. Next up for Vaca might include a date with the UFC brass. Next up for Scary Nickname is a date with fatherhood, as he and Danielle are expecting their first baby, due later this year. Good luck to both of these warriors. They’ll both be back!

Fight # 6
Brett Oteri vs. Tim Pinney
170 lb pro (3×5)

Where do I begin?…..Neither the defending champ, Pinney, nor Oteri made weight! That is so surprising to me. However, one of our readers at NortheastMMA.net, Irish Boom, called this one on Tim Pinney several weeks out! Tim Pinney used to be known as the most hated man in MMA, but I’ve always found him to be a sweetheart of a guy! Now I can see that Oteri might not make weight, I’d almost expect that out of Brett. You see, I have seen and covered his last two fights, and in my professional opinion, based upon those two fights, Brett Oteri has at least twenty pounds of balls…So I can excuse Brett for not making weight……. Because neither fighter made weight, this is not a title fight, and therefore only three rounds.

Round 1: Brett, the wrestler, does what he does best and shoots right off, eventually getting a slam and landing in half guard. From the top, Oteri is landing elbows and punches. Pinney tries to nail a kimura from the bottom, but Oteri pulls it out and continues G&P. Pinney tries for a leg lock, but Oteri won’t have it and he continues his G&P attack from the top of side control, adding knees to the elbows and punches. Oteri tries a kimura from the top, but it won’t work, so he moves to mount and finishes the round with more punches from the top!
Old School score: Oteri 10-9

Round 2: Oteri starts the round with a double leg shot and he lifts Pinney. It then dawns on Oteri that his opponent has not yet met his corner man, so Brett Oteri walks over to his corner with Pinney over his shoulder and deposits the most hated man in MMA squarely on the mat in front of his corner. Pinney tries a triangle choke but it won’t go, so he settles for bottom guard. Pinney tries an arm bar from bottom but only gets slammed again. Oteri stays busy on top with elbows and punches while Pinney is active in guard off the bottom. Oteri goes to half guard and drops a few elbows, but the ref doesn’t think it’s enough, so he stands the two fighters up. Brett shoots right away and Pinney tries a guillotine standing, but Oteri takes the fight down to the mat to end the round!!!
Old School score: Oteri 10-9

Round 3: Pinney looks tired, and he is bleeding. He tries a spinning back fist as Oteri does what wrestlers do best…Oteri is on top once again and the action is either slow or nonexistent, so the ref stands it up. Oteri opens it up with some kicks and then shoots a double. Once again, he walks Pinney over to his corner and SLAMS him (see Matt Hughes body slams 101) on the mat. Oteri drops some elbows from side control. Pinney locks in a heel hook from the bottom and it looks deep, but eventually Oteri sits out on it and waves to the crowd. He evokes a big cheer for this one. Oteri is now in side control with Pinney on the bottom still. Brett is pushing and turning with great wrestling control while Tim Pinney is finishing the task of counting all the ceiling tiles in the athletic complex at the Mohegan Sun as the round ends!
Old School score: Oteri 10-9

Official Decision: Winner by Unanimous Decision Brett Oteri

Brett Oteri grinded out a John Fitch like decision, keeping the fight on his own playing field. He showed superior ground control and conditioning, with nice Bjj defense! Next up for Brett Oteri is fatherhood, as he and his wife are also expecting a baby later this year!! Wow, maybe there is something to the long cold New England winter theory after all.

Tim Pinney looked a bit busted up afterwards, sporting cuts, abrasions, and some puffiness of the face. He was very upset and was accusing Oteri of greasing his legs in order to negate the leg locks. (See BJ Penn; The Chronicles of an MMA Crybaby.) He said that a cage-side camera man pointed it out to him. When, later, I asked Brett about it, he said that after the fight Tim was really pissed off and accused him of the infraction while they were still in the cage. He had ref Dan Miragliotta check his legs and Big Dan said he was perfectly clean! End of story!!!

Fight # 7
Heavy weight Title fight (5×5)
Mike “Lights Out” Dexter vs. Parker Porter

Round 1: The two heavy’s meet in cage center and Porter is pumping the jab and it’s effective. Porter cracks Dexter with a crisp jab and Dexter goes down. Porter follows him down with G&P and knees; just an old fashioned beat down. Dexter is trying to turtle up, but Porter is relentless in his attack. Maybe Dexter owes him money… The beating continues and Dexter is not defending very well at all. The unanswered punch count probably reaches fifty and FINALLY the ref steps in before the cops do. And the DNA removal crew is back to work!!!
Winner by Assault and Battery @ 1:36 round 1: Parker Porter

Congratulations to Parker Porter, the new Reality Fighting Heavy weight Champ!!!
After the fight, Parker told me about how well his training went for this fight. His game gets better with each outing, including wrestling and Bjj. After the fight, Kipp had Gabe Gonzaga in the cage, and a verbal agreement for a September fight with Parker Porter was set! Good luck parker!!!

Mike Dexter was out for a loooooong time and eventually had to be taken out on a gurney by the medical staff. I would find out later that the fight was stopped because Dexter verbally submitted and Porter stopped fighting and told the ref that his opponent was trying verbally tap! WTF is wrong with this ref staff??? One does not need to hear a fighter verbally submit to realize that fifty unanswered punches to the head is too much of a beating! Four out of seven fights ended with serious G&P, three of which went way too long. The two refs in question here are Din Miragliotta and Yves Lavigne. These two guys are professional refs, but this particular night they really had off nights. Mike Dexter, Leroy Derricott, and Johnny Lopez didn’t need to take the punishment that they did!

Random thoughts
In addition to big Gabe Gonzaga, Matt Serra was in the house. Kipp and Joe were back to their old selves, putting up a great show!!! Nate Lamotte was visible as well, looking extra fit and lean, considering he’s in between fights.
Matt Bessette was around as well. He told me that he normally walks around at 165 lbs, but with the Jon Benoit fight on the horizon he’s buffed up to over 180 lbs. (They will fight @ 155 lbs.) I do believe him, ‘cause his left ear alone looks to weigh around three pounds (and that’s up from one pound!) Matty’s training hard for this fight… Good luck, my friend!

Awards:

Fight of the night: Joe Proctor and Eric Fama
TKO of the night: Parker Porter
Submission of the night: Alexandre “Vaca” Moreno
Comeback story of the night: Kipp and the folks at Reality fighting
SNAFU of the night: Referee crew Dan Miragliotta and Yves Lavigne
#2 SNAFU of the night: Brett Oteri and Tim Pinney for not making weight

Congratulations to all the award winners. Pick up your bonus checks from Kipp at his house any time you wish!

Well, that’s all the news for now! Keep it professional… and clean up when you’re done!

Cage Titans “Mayhem” Review

by Rick ~ January 31st, 2011

Cage Titans “Mayhem”
By Grant Tremelling

Mike Polvere put together a Great show this past Friday at Lombardo’s in Randolph.  I had never been to this venue before and was impressed first by the use of space and second how fluidly everything moved.  There was a projection screen for some of the fighter interdictions as well as intermission entertainment.  I have been at other shows in ballrooms and function rooms and always feel cramped but this venue felt spacious and I credit a good layout.  I was impressed also by the matchmaking, almost every fight I saw was a battle and there weren’t any overly lopsided fights.  The house was pretty full from the beginning of the night and legitimately packed by the 6th fight.  Great job to Mike and his team, I look forward to seeing more of these events.

135 – Alandre Martinez (0-0, Wai Kru) vs Davis Roast (0-0, Sityodtong)

Both men come out stalking, looking to bang.  Alandre is in a southpaw and davis is circling looking for an opening. Davis lands a huge left hook right uppercut that rocks alandre.  Alandre recovers quickly and gets a takedown on davis.  After a bit of a battle davis gets a reversal and starts to work GNP from the top.  Nothing huge is landing but they are big strikes.  Alandre curls in to fend off a flurry so Davis locks in a 1 arm guillotine, stands and wraps his legs to end the round.

Davis seems much more confident and comes out the aggressor throwing kicks though nothing lands clean.  Alandre ties up for a takedown but gets reversed landing Davis on top.  Alandre is doing a good job of attempting submissions and keeping davis broke down, he goes for a armbar but davis pulls out and takes his back.  He locks in the Rear naked choke for the win.

Winner Davis Roast: Via RNC at 1:49 of round 2

155 – Nate Oses (0-1, Team BMAC) vs Rob Font (0-0, Sityodtong)

Nate comes out and lands a huge leg kick but eats 3 punches to the face in return.  Nate throws another kick with a similar result but both kicks were huge.  Rob throws a wild 3 punch combo that drops him.  These two are beasts, neither is holding back.  Nate gets guard and rob capitalizes on his position with some strong ground and pound.  Landing a number of HUGE rights by poping up to stand and quickly throwing a strike every time nate opens his guard, which is often because he is working lots of subs.  One of them bloody’s nates nose and he is starting to look worse for the wear.  Nate goes for a triangle which rob uses to almost pass but gets swept, and nate passes to side control.  The round ends with Nate working a kimura.

Nate comes out and shoots a big double running rob into the cage to finish it.  He is trying to pass but rob wont let him posture.  Rob throws up a quick triangle but its on the end of his foot and nate escapes to side.  From here he works some ground and pound but isn’t doing much damage.  He seems to be going for more submissions than damage.  Rob does a great job of defending submissions but keeps loosing position.  Rob regains guard and they remain there the rest of the round, Nate lands a few from the top but mostly short punches.

Nate comes out looking a little fresher than rob, he throws a kick but eats a cross, both land hard.  Nate comes back looking for a takedown and rob looks to reverse but nate is able to change angles and finish the takedown.  There are a lot of scrambles and nate is getting the better of them positionally, he isn’t doing much damage but is controlling.  He goes for a fast armbar out of nowhere and rob escapes but somehow nate is able to get back on top and rob doesn’t have much left.  The round ends.

Winner by decision Nate Oses

I agree with the decision based on rounds, But rob did some serious damage in the first round, I think he might have broken Nate’s nose.  Big props to nate for keeping it together and coming back for the win.

155 – Shaun Shubert (0-2, Eclectic Karate) vs Bill Keeley (1-0, SSSF)

Shaun comes out without hesitation and throws a pretty big kick to the body that lands, but bill uses it to take him down.  Bill starts landing big blows from the mount and but Shaun does a decent job of defending most of them.  Bill lands another flurry and the ref calls it.  It looked like it could have been a little early but Shaun was getting dominated.

Winner Bill Keeley at :48 seconds of the first round.
140 – #8 Ranked 135lb Josh Lopez (3-0, AFT) vs Billy Giovanella (2-0, Connors MMA)

Billy comes out pushing the action and is able to tie up josh against the cage, Josh stays calm but billy gets low and finishes a huge double leg picking him up and dropping him.  Josh shows great control off of his back and almost gets an armbar though billy does a great job of getting out and staying on top.  Billy times up a kick from josh to land a smooth double then moves josh into the cage.  Billy has control but has his hips up and head down.  Josh locks up behind billys head and uses it to get an armbar but the angle isn’t quite right, billy cant escape but waits the 10 seconds for the round end  and the ref separates them.

Billy stalks josh and ties up, josh does a good job of defending a takedown against the fence and somehow gets around to billys back.  It looks like he almost has an RNC locked in but billy is able to wiggle out.  Josh flattens him out and is trying to work some headstrikes.  Josh is exhibiting good control but isn’t doing that much damage.  Josh after a minute or so sloughs off one side to go for an armbar but billy moves to counter and there isn’t enough time in the round to finsh.

Josh seems a bit more fresh than billy at this point but bill pushes forward and ties up for a takedown attempt as soon as josh is in range.  Josh backpedals to the cage and then defends the takedowns for a while before bill can pull him off the cage with a single and get the takedown.  Josh is working well from the bottom but billy is able to wiggle out of the multiple submission attempts.  Josh locks up a triangle and is cinching it in as the round ends.

Decision Billy Giovanella
Hvy – Zach Zamzow (0-1, Team KAOS) vs Anthony Pepdjonovic (0-0, Best Way BJJ)

Anthony comes out swinging and lands a few big combinations.  Zach seems stunned and backpedals, Anthony gets a takedown and pounds from side control to get the finish.

Winner Anthony Pepdjonovic at :36 of the first round.

Anthony seems to have good hands especially for his size and might be someone to keep an eye on.
145 – #6 Ranked 145lb Sergio Cabrera (2-0, Team BMAC) vs Brett Morris (2-0, Rivera MMA)

Brett comes out and immediately lands a quick 1-2.  Sergio immediately ties up and starts looking for the takedown.  Bret does a great job defending and lands some big punches from the clinch in the process.  Sergio gets the better of a scramble and is able to get bret down and then moves into his guard.  Brett works an armbar and Sergio spikes him but brett hangs on.  Sergio is able to get out of the armbar and work some ground and pound.  Brett is staying active on the ground but Sergio seems to have the answer for most of what he is trying.  Sergio is able to posture and throw bombs that land to the head about 3 times before the round ends.

Brett comes out and throws a massive head kick that just barely soars over Sergio as he ducks.  Sergio catches his back and brett is able to turn in but gets taken down in the process.  Sergio is trying to work GNP but isn’t landing much clean, Brett works an armbar but Sergio is able to get out and posture for a few big strikes.  Sergio is now standing in brets guard and landing massive strikes to the body and a few big ones to the head.  The round ends, Bret looks frustrated at the end of the round, he took a fair amount of damage but doesn’t look too worse for the wear.

Bret comes out and lands a few well placed strikes to the head standing.  He then ties up with Cabrera who takes him down.  Sergio isn’t doing as much damage this time but he is comfortable  maintaining control.  Sergio lands one or two more little strikes to end the round.

Winner Sergio Via Unanamous decision
135 – #10 Ranked 135lb Dan Cormier (3-1, Team United) vs #4 Ranked 135lb Dat Tran (3-1, Sityodtong)

Dat elects not to tap hands and Dan comes out wild landing 2 big blows to the head  and gets a takedown after some great sprawling and cage defence from dat.  Dat escapes and they stand.  Dan lands 2 huge rights to the head (overhand right/hook) then a right to the body and a left hook that all rock Dat who recovers quickly to clinch. Dat gets in a few strikes before Dan is able to get another takedown.  Dan is working some vicious ground and pound but Dat is staying active and defends most of it.

Dan comes out with a left hook that lands and then comes in again to strike but decides instead to shoot when he sees Dat switch his hips.  Dat is able to get guard and Dan looks to pass instead of do damage.  Dat squirms back to the cage and uses it to stand but dan is able to stick to his legs and get another takedown once he is up and then a quick pass.  Dat exposes his neck in a scramble and Dan gets a forearm under his chin  and rolls under him for a guillotine attempt.  The round ends moments after when Dat free’s himself.

Dat comes out cautious of the takedown.  As soon as Dan shoots Tran sprawls hard on him and then lands a big knee to the stomach.  Dan re-shoots but doesn’t seem to be able to get out from under him.  Dat is able to muscle him onto his back and then mount him and unleash big strikes from the top.  After about 5 unanswered the reff steps in.

Winner by TKO Dat Tran at of 1:21 Round 3

WOW great fight, Dan did a great job of dominating the early rounds but Dat was never really out of it, in the third Dat used his window and was able to Finish, great showing by both fighters.
140 – Shayne Stephenson (0-0, Lakeville MMA) vs Matt Tullos (0-0, Connors MMA)

The men meet in the middle and it seems as if Shayne tried to punch matt instead of tap hands, Matt quickly lands a big hook in return and then they both take a step back and shoot into each other.  They scramble for a while and Shayne looks to have the better of it until Matt gets low and picks up Shayne for a huge slam.  Shayne is on the bottom working a kimura, there is scramble then Matt is on the bottom with a locked in armbar.  Shayne Spikes him to get out of it and matt pulls guard.  Matt is very active from the bottom looking for sweeps, Shayne lets his head down for a minute and matt is able to lock in a guillotine.  After a few moments Shayne gets out but matt is able to regain some position and finishes a really technical slow motion takedown.  The round ends.

Shayne comes out with his hands by his side and throws a looping kick.  They square up then Matt is able to get a takedown.  Shayne is turning away and matt is able to land 4 big knees to his upper thigh.  Matt mounts then locks in a really tight head and arm choke but Shayne is able to roll to the top, matt rolls him back to his back then uses the high mount to pound away for the TKO stoppage.

Winner Matt Tulos as 2:15 of the second round.

Matt looked great that fight, really well rounded.  Shayne had a lot of heart and definitely pushed the pace but matt was able to stay calm and pick his moments.
135 – Tom Benjamin (2-3, Team KAOS) vs #6 Ranked 135lb Rico DiSciullo (2-0, Sityodtong)

Rico is fired up in his corner pacing back and forth.  They touch hands and Rico flips the switch, he throws a huge right with his whole body behind it that lands then eats a punch or two, and drops Tom with another huge right.  Tom is on his knees and Rico lands another just as big.  He gets in one more on Tom before the ref realizes he is out.

Winner by KO at :09 of Round 1

This kid is fierce, no fear and every strike has his whole body behind it.  I am not sure if I have seen a 135 hit that hard.

170 – Fernando Victor (0-0, Team BMAC) vs Zach Costello (2-0, MAXX)

The fight starts with Zach stalking Fernando, he lands a jab cross right away and then they clinch.  Zach is looking for a takedown and they scramble a bit before Fernando is able to reverse him.  Fernando leaves his head down during an awkward position against the cage and Zach is able to pull him into a guillotine.  Zach cinches down and Fernando is forced to tap.

Winner via Guillotine Choke at 1:09 of Round 1

Zach looks like a pretty powerful 170, Fernando seemed very technical but was just overwhelmed.

185 Ammy Title
#2 Ranked 185lb Joe Palazio (2-1, Allaire) vs #1 Ranked 185lb Sloppy Joe Lamoureaux (5-1, SSSF)

Sloppy charges in and immediately starts working for a takedown.  He gets Palazio down and starts to work some ground and pound but Palazio does a good job defending.  Sloppy takes side control but palazio hip’s out and gets half guard.  During a scramble Palazio is able to take Sloppy’s back as he stands and starts working a rear naked.  The round ends.

Sloppy again charges in this time securing a one handed clinch and throwing uppercuts hockey fight style.  He lands a few then pushes palazio to the cage and gets a monster takedown that shakes the ground.  Sloppy moves to mount and starts pounding away.  Palazio is trying to turn but cant do much. Sloppy recognizes Palazio is starting to wilt and lays it on.  The ref stops it after a barrage of unanswered strikes from the top.

Winner By TKO Sloppy Joe Lamoureaux at 1:21 of round 2

145 Ammy Title
#1 Ranked 145lb Andre Soukhamthath (3-0, Team United) vs #2 Ranked 145lb Frank Sforza (3-0, SSSF)

The crowd is crazy for this fight, they have positioned the cheering sections for each across from the cage from each other and they are having at it before the fighters even get in the cage.

They elect not to touch gloves and andre starts to circle.  Frank see’s andre near the cage and shoots for a takedown, he gets control and picks andre up for a huge slam.  Andre maintains composure and gets guard.  Frank is trying to work GNP but andre is doing a good job of defending .  Andre pushes off to make space and frank takes side control.  Andre regins half, frank postures and tries to get position. And Andre uses the scramble to end up in franks guard.  After a few strikes from Andre they stand.  Andre goes for a huge flying knee that lands to the chest and they tie up against the cage.

I think at this point the entire crowd is either cheering for frank or andre. Everyone is on their feet.

They meet in the middle and as frank comes in andre lands an uppercut and a hook.  Frank changes levels and gets a leg for the takedown.  Andre has frank in his a guard. Every time frank postures to strike Andre does a great job of covering up but he isn’t mounting much offence from his back.  Frank is staying high and controlling but also not doing much damage from the top.  At this point frank is in Andre’s half guard with Andre against the cage he lands 2 nice shots and the round ends.

Andre comes out and lands a big teep.  He is trying to keep frank at a distance but frank takes a punch to the head and a knee to get in and get the takedown. Again frank is sitting in half guard trying to do damage and Andre is doing his best to defend from his back.  Frank is staying active and trying to do damage but isn’t landing much.  The ref separates them and Andre comes in with a high kick.  Frank catches it and pushes him to the cage, Andre defends the takedown and the round ends.

Both men come out looking exhausted.  Frank seems a little tentative to close the distance, Andre comes in but frank changes levels for a single that he turns into a trip.  Andre hits the ground hard against the cage.  Andre is in half guard again, and frank is starting to land a little more but to the body not the head.  Out of nowhere Andre has a deep armbar but frank spikes him and gets out.  Frank gets side control and continues to grind Andre but not much damage is done.

Andre opens the round with a snapping kick, frank ducks into it and catches it in the upper arm but gets the other leg for the takedown.  Frank postures and Andre attemps a triangle as he comes back down.  Frank is able to posture out of it and then passes his legs to get side control.  Frank chips away at Andre with little shots for the remainder of the round.

Winner by Unanimous Decision Frank Sforza

Hvy – Sandor Binkley (0-0, NEMMA) vs Tyler King (1-0, Connors MMA)

Tyler starts off by shooting for a big takedown.  Sandor is able to get half guard then starts working a sweep.  Tyler quickly flattens Sandor and starts to pepper his head from half.  Tyler has trouble making space so he starts elbowing the thigh which coaxes sandor to put his hand up and tyler starts to look for a head and arm choke but can’t get his leg free to finish.  Tyler changes strategy and starts to try to mount.  He can’t free a leg so switches to an Americana/key lock and cranks for the tap.

Winner Tyler King at 3:07 of round 1 Via “Kimura”
155 – Billy Walsh (2-5, UFAI) vs Nick Newell (3-0, FAA)

Nick immediately takes the center of the ring and lands a huge right and then a left elbow and many more rights that crumple billy.  As billy folds against the cage nick mounts him and continues to pound away with elbows.  Nick changes to a super tight armbar really fast and pushes his hips through for the finish.

Winner by Armbar at 1:24 of the first round

My hat is off to Nick, great fight, he’s super aggressive and really well rounded.
145 – #10 Ranked 145lb Ruben Rey (4-1, Team Rockstar) vs Shaun Marmas (2-1, Integrated Martial Arts)

I think the remaining fans in the house are Rubens cause everyone is going nuts again.  They clinch and Ruben throws a few knees.  Shawn tries to get behind him but Ruben lands a MONSTER hip toss that lands Shaun on his head. He mounts and pounds away then as shaun turns his back he goes for an armbar and it looks deep.  I am really surprised Shaun does not tap to the armbar.  Shaun escapes and Ruben is on bottom.  Ruben misses a triangle attempt and Shaun controls from the top for a while but doesn’t do much damage.  As they scramble Shaun is showing great control. And eventually flattens Ruben out.  They stand and Ruben gets an unorthodox takedown against the cage.  Shaun squirms to get control then puts his hooks in and starts banging on the side of rubens head.  The round ends.

Ruben starts the round with a back leg kick to the body that lands flush.  Shaun tries to throw a kick and slips, Ruben capitalizes and moves into his guard.  Shaun works a guillotine but lets it go when he can’t get a good angle, he works a crucifix to try to get Ruben off but Ruben is stuck to him.  The ref stands them up.  Ruben looks real tired but lands a big kick to the body again.  Ruben is fighting with his hands at his hips but comes in and lands two big rights and then another hip toss.  Shaun takes his back from the bottom in side control and then after a scramble ends up in the mount.  Ruben turns his back and Shaun gets his hooks in and starts peppering the side of his head with shots, but they aren’t hard or in rapid enough succession to stop the fight.  The round ends

Ruben starts the round with a jab and a jab cross that land.  He doesn’t have much on his punches but they are landing.  He lands another 3 and a knee but Shaun is able to circle off the cage.  Then returns with some offence of his own.  Ruben is fighting with his hands down and Shaun unloads with a 4 punch combo a knee and another flurry.  They are against the cage trading knees.  Shaun starts to get the better of the battle and lands a knee to the body and two to the face.  Ruben is half gone but puts everything he has into a right that drops Shaun.  Shaun drops to the matt and Ruben lands another monster strike standing over him.  Shaun is out but the reff doesn’t see it and ruben falls on him because he is so exhausted.  He lands another 2 strikes and the ref calls it.

Winner Via KO Ruben Rey at 2:20 of Rnd 3

Amazing fight, it looks like Ruben was slipping away but then he pulled it together to get the knockout.  Big heart.

135 – #10 Ranked 135lb Barrington Douse (6-9, AFT) vs Christian Rivera (4-10, Dragon Warrior)

Barrington starts stalking Christian and lands a few straight rights and a kick.  Christian isn’t backing down but he is starting to move side to side to try to avoid Barrington’s attack.  Barrington continues to stalk Christian, at one point he takes a stiff inside leg kid and smiles it off.  He clinches and starts throwing knee’s on Christian but Christian gets in an uppercut and a hook.  Barrington is much bigger than Christian and has backed him into the cage with the clinch.  Christian slips and Barrington starts to work a choke from over the top/behind him then gets his hooks in but Christian wiggles out.  Barrington again gets the hooks in but this time has one of Christian’s arms and the choke already sunk and Squeezes for the finish.

Winner Barrington Douse at 3:24 of Round 1 Via RNC

THE REST OF THE STORY

I broke from the usual format this week for obvious reasons.  My partner in Rhyme, Mark Hoxie, was hung up in Syracuse, and therefore, I had to delay the rest of the story.  The fight card featured eight amateur fights (three x three minute rounds) and two pro fights (three x five minute rounds).  Promoter Kipp Kollar and his trusty side kick Joe Cuff had their hands full, as they had just wrapped up the NAGA grappling tourney a few hours earlier.  On to the fights:

Pat Quigly defeated Bryan Trigila in the first fight, first round by Rear Naked Choke.  Bryan was landing leg kicks early in this amateur bout, but what appeared to be an accidental head butt caused a cut on the forehead of Bryan.  The boys fought on, and Quigly nailed a takedown to rear control, and finished the fight.  There was a little blood on the mat, and it seemed that the ring crew had a tough time cleaning it up (obviously this was not Kipp’s regular boys).  I wondered what they would do in the event of a real bloody battle in the cage!

Israel Martinez and Manny Torres, two lightweight amateurs, put on a great fight.  After winning a tough first round, Manny grabs a guillotine standing and jumps guard in the second round.  Martinez pulls out and is now in the top of guard, but Manny locks in a neck crank from the bottom for the tap out at 2:06 of round two!!  This was an excellent fight with both guys fighting well both on their feet and on the mat.

Nate Nadeau and PJ Lindner matched up in a lightweight ammy bout.  Early on in the first round it was Nate landing G&P from the top and PJ working BJJ off the bottom.  Back on the feet it was PJ grabbing a takedown to top of guard, but Nate locked in a guillotine for a speedy quick tap out at 1:55 of round one.  The choke must have been wicked deep and tight, as that was a really fast tap!  Nice job for Nadeau!!

Thiago Ferreira put on a dominant performance against Jason Bristol in a battle of 195 pound amateurs.  Thiago was landing leg kicks early, one of which knocked Jason to the mat.  After a scramble, Thiago worked a nice ground game.  Jason tried to stand, but the American top fighter hauled him back down and eventually, with both hooks in, worked the RNC for the tap out!!  Thiago showed real good striking and a nice ground game!

Adez Lolick and Jarrid Heon waged an awesome battle at 170 pounds.  The first round saw good striking, kicks, and punches both ways.  Adez scored a takedown and controlled the rest of the round with G&P, despite a triangle attempt from Heon.  The second round was more of the same, as Lolick scores an early takedown off some striking, and is able to keep it there with some G&P.  Ref Dan Miragliotta stood the fight up, and Jarrid nailed a takedown to end the round.  I have Lolick winning both of these rounds.

Heon started unloading heavily in the third round from the stand up and then from the ground.  He dominated this round, but it was not enough, as Lolick won a split decision.  This was a real nice effort by both warriors!

Jay Ward and Julian Papasian, each with a huge fan base, took center cage at 185 pounds.  The fight was dominated by Ward, who appeared to be a bit bigger.  Ward easily controlled the stand up game, despite Julian’s efforts to get the fight to the ground.  Ward was able to keep the fight standing for nearly all three three minute rounds and won a unanimous decision.  Despite showing great heart, Julian was not able to get enough time on the mat to work his ground game.

The first pro fight of the evening featured Kevin Horowitz, of the Rhino fight team, and Joe McGann, out of USMMA.  In the first round it was nearly all McGann, as he put Horowitz on his back and rained down some nasty G&P for much of the round.  Kevin did get to his feet briefly but got lifted and slammed for his effort.  Kevin did also have a real nice arm bar attempt, but other than that, it was all McGann for an unofficial 10-8 first round.

In the second round Horowitz controlled the first 2 1/2 minutes with methodical punching, but for some reason he decided to shoot a double and got himself taken down and took some more punishment on the mat.  Horowitz did have a few sub attempts from the bottom in this round.

The third round saw Horowitz winning the stand up once again, and for some reason he shot a double and got himself taken down.  This time, McGann put a huge dose of G&P, using knees, punches, and elbows.  This fight was dominated by McGann, but Horowitz showed great heart.  This would have been a close fight if Kevin had a little more confidence in his stand up.  All three judges score this fight 30-26 for McGann!

Submission of the night went to Joe Powers, a stocky fighter out of Dexter Vale Tudo.  He and Justin Corneglia hooked up in a 155 pound amateur battle that had Corneglia landing leg kicks right out of the gate.  When Corneglia shot in for a double leg takedown, Powers locked in a standing guillotine.  It was in really tight and Corneglia never tapped…he just went to sleep at 1:10 of the first round!!  This was simply an awesome submission by Joe Powers!!!  I wonder what other tricks he has in his tool box.  I expect we’ll see some of them in the near future.

Fight of the Night honors went to the main event fighters Chip Moraza-Pollard (CCFA) and Brett Oteri (Connors MMA).  The two welterweight Pros waged a classic striker/grappler battle that could have gone either way at several points during the fight.

     Here’s how I called it:

Round One:  Big Dan Miragliotta is the third man in the cage for this one!  Oteri tries a shot and Chip stuffs it…once…twice…and the third time he finally gets the takedown to top of guard.  Brett punches from the top and Chip elbows from the bottom.  The action stalls for a while so Big Dan stands the fighters up.  They clinch to the cage until Brett gets a slam to top control.  Brett is working well and Chip is defending well as the round ends.

Old School Score: Brett Oteri 10-9

Round Two:  Chip starts the round with crisp striking until Brett finally gets a takedown.  After some small G&P by Brett, Chip stands.  Brett is fighting for another takedown along the cage, but is eating Pollard flavored elbows with a hammer fist on top.  Brett finally gets a hard earned takedown to mount, but Chip pulls it to guard to neutralize Brett.  Chip is now working a go-go but Brett says no-no and is able to neutralize this.  Eventually, the ref stands it up.  Chip lands some nice strikes and Brett doesn’t like this as he forces a clinch to the cage to end the second round.

                   Old School Score:  10-10 Tie

This round was so close to call that I have to call it even.  I can’t really say that Chip’s striking cage center and clinch striking elbows out weighed the fact that Brett did get another takedown and was able to hold it there for a while, even though he did little with it.  I am very impressed with the way that Oteri digs in for a shot and doesn’t give it up until he gets some form of a takedown… Great round to watch, but a tough round to Call!

Round Three:  Both fighters walk to center cage for a handshake to start the final round.  They separate and Chip looks scary!  A left hook to the liver drops Oteri, but some how he hangs on to a scramble.  Chip is able to strike during this, but Oteri does eventually get the takedown.  Chip stands it up, but Oteri throws a nice slam to land in top of rear control.  Chip works a stand up and they clinch along the cage.  The ref separates them after a spell.  Chip throws a head kick that is partially blocked and follows that up with body shots from many angles… Pollard is landing bombs and Oteri is somehow still standing!!  Brett takes a clinch to the cage to end the round!!!

Old School Score:  Chip Moraza-Pollard 10-9

I have this fight as close as Siamese twins sharing a piece of bubble gum.  The crowd is waiting for the decision to be announced, and when it is announced that Oteri wins 29-28 on all three cards, the Boos rain down from the rafters.  I can see this fight going either way…it was that close…and neither fighter having a complaint.  This was just a great fight put on by two local warriors!!!  FOTN easy!

TKO of the night was the easiest decision, because there were no KOs and there was only one TKO.  Congratulations to Eric Tseronis from Team Burgess!

Coolest Storyline was another no brainer.  When I first walked in to the venue and set up at my press table, I saw my ole buddy Nate Lamotte at cage side and we started catching up on things.  He told me about his fighter who is on the card tonight.  Eric Tseronis is an old friend of his from childhood and high school days.  About three years ago, Eric lost his girlfriend, truly the love of his life.  The death of his sweetie sent Eric into deep depression for a spell.  (For those out there who are new to the regional MMA scene, Nate Lamotte is and has been at the foundation of sanctioned MMA here in the northeast for many years.  He is a charter member of Team Burgess and one of the highest ranked welterweights in the northeast!)   Nate and another of his team mates, Ryan Scheiding, who is the third member of the long standing friendship trio (and also a regionally ranked welterweight), in an effort to help their pal through this difficult time, got Eric to come into the gym.  They all figured the grieving process could be helped with some good old-fashioned sweat amongst friends.  That was three years ago…Oh yeah, at the time the grieving began, Eric Tseronis weighed 350 pounds!!!

Eric entered the next Phase of his life on December 18, 2010 at a lean 170 pounds.  This bears two significant points; that Eric has lost more than half of his original body weight and that he is now part of the most dominant group of welterweights in the northeast in Team Burgess!!!  Lamotte, Scheiding, Hammerstrom, Fortier, Mcquaid…..Tseronis…..

(I’ll give you all a moment to go and get a tissue to wipe your eyes.)

Here’s how I called the action:

The second fight of the card is a welterweight amateur fight between two rookies Eric Tseronis and Nate Charles.  Eric appears to be a bit taller and leaner.  Dan Miragliotta is the ref… Wow, can you imagine your first fight and Big Dan is the third man in the cage?!

Round One:  The fighters come out and are striking cage center.  Eric gets a takedown and the fight is worked back to the feet.  Nate drops Eric with a crisp punch but some how Eric is right back up!  (I think there must be an angel in the cage too!)  Eric nails another takedown, and this time he goes to mount and begins to unload!  The G&P continues until the ref has seen enough and calls a stop to it.

                   Winner by TKO: Eric Tseronis

After the fight, Eric was kind enough to sit down and give me some insight into his life over the last few years.  Like so many of us, Eric found his way into the MMA game through the back window.  Right now, Eric is half the man he once was…But he’s twice the guy he could ever have hoped to be!  Merry Christmas Eric and thanks for the story!!!

Most Handsome Corner goes to Team Burgess.  Sorry CCFA, but no Nader, see ya later.  Besides, it’s hard to compete with Master John, Ryan, and Nate!!

Well, kiddies, that’s how I called it.  And remember, I call ‘em like I see ‘em, and if I don’t see ‘em, I make ‘em up…

‘TWAS THE FIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

‘Twas the fight before Christmas at Mohegan Sun

The Medicals complete and the weigh-ins were done!

The paper work finished, the red tape complete

The “I”s have been dotted and crossed were the “T”s.

The fighters all crashed, asleep in their beds

While visions of ring girls danced in their heads;

And Kipp in his hoodie, Joe Cuff and the crew

Had just settled down for a well deserved brew.

The talk turned to fighting, the MMA game.

Joe thought of the fighters, and mentioned their names.

Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now Prancer and Vixen!

On Comet! On Cupid! On Donner and Blitzen!

“No, Joe! Said Kipp, the MMA Elf

That’s another story, I’ll name them myself.

Now Lindner and Pollard, Charles and Tseronis

Lolick and Bristol, Nadeau and Torres

Justin Corneglia, Ward and Heon,

McGann and Trigila and Julian Papasian,

Israel Martinez, Thiago and Pat,

Kevin Horowitz, Joe Powers and Brett.

The fighters are readied with tape on their hands.

The seats were full of MMA fans.

The production is smooth (It’s usual Manner)

With a lovely rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.

The card was a blend of experience and rookies.

The ring girls were a blend of cute little tushies!

The crowd was excited, all ready to go.

The announcer called out for the start of the show!

The first fight on the card saw some blood on the mat

From the Blue Devil Bryan as he battled with Pat!

Then a double leg take-down by The American Top bloke

Saw Pat finish him off with a rear naked choke!!!

Then out came Tseronis, the Burgess disciple.

He knows how to strike and he knows haw to grapple.

He took Nate Charles down and on to the mat

And won by TKO victory…Simple as that!

Israel and Manny are involved in a war!

In the second round it goes to the floor.

This MMA fight game is the craziest of sports.

Manny wins from the bottom, with a neck crank of sorts!!!

Fight number four featured PJ and Nate.

It went to the ground and then back to the feet!

But Nate’s BJJ was so smooth and so clean

He tapped PJ out with a quick Guillotine.

Jason and Thiago are one ninety five pounders.

They tap their gloves to start their three rounder.

But Thiago was slick on the feet and the ground.

He won by rear naked choke in the very first round.

When Jarrid and Adez closed the Cage door

The two Welterweights put on a war

They showed high kicks and punches and ground fighting precision

And Adez squeaked out a split decision

The light weight Ammys, Justin and Joe

Were repping the Boneyard and Dexter Vale Tudo.

Justin was throwing leg kicks that were landing

But Joe locked in a guillotine and choked him out standing!

As Justin went out the cage floor was his bed

And visions of sugar plums danced in his head.

The winner’s hand raised, the crowd cheering the fight

Joe walked away with submission of the night.

Two local Middleweights, Julian and Jay,

The grappler vs. striker battled away.

Julian tried to get the fight to the ground

But Jay kept it standing and won every round!

Horowitz and McGann, two welterweight pros,

Treated the fans to a three round show.

Punches and elbows and knees by McGann

Proved that tonight he is the man.

He carried the fight from wire to wire

But Horowitz fought bravely with guts and desire

The judges see victory for McGann and his camp

But the fans see, in Horowitz, the heart of a champ.

The main event was a fight for the age

With Dan Miragliotta the third man in the cage.

Featuring Brett from Connors (not Lauzon!)

And the Cape Cod surgeon (with CCFA clothes on)

Brett worked hard to get the fight to the ground

And he kept it there for the first two rounds.

But Chip, the striker, opened the third

With a shot to the liver the crowd clearly heard!

As the warriors battled on into the night

We came to the close of this pre Christmas fight.

And in the end it was the man from Connors

With his hand raised high taking home the top honors.

All the fighters walked in, all the fighters walked out.

Each fought his best and that’s what it’s about!

As this sport continues to soar like an eagle

                    (remember kids)

Keep it in the cage and keep it legal!

I thank God for the refs, our trainers, and friends.

We can all come back and do this again.

And from all of us here at the web site…

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!!!
