Hey guys, Rick here. Bonnell posted this for me because I was busy and I wanted to throw in a few words, and wasn’t sure you’d notice if it was buried in the comments. As always, rankings are impossible. This time we ran into the unique issue of “what happens when a guy loses in a weight class above his?” and specifically saw that with Saul losing to Pete Jefferies at 155, with 145 being his “real” weight class, as well as Tom Moreau losing to Brett Oteri at a weight above 170, and Pedro Gonzales losing to Brandao at 145. Tough one to call, and as always, we look at these on a case by case basis…but it’s tough to drop a guy too many spots (if at all) when he takes a tough fight in a higher weight class.
We also ran into what I’ll refer to as “the Jason Bennett issue.” Jason is great, and we all know that…and we always talk about guys who take tough fights, but Jason has fought literally the 4 toughest guys he could have fought at the time. Henrique Bicalho was his first loss, and he was ranked 1 or 2 at the time. Ken Stone and Paul Gorman were losses 2 and 3, and those two guys have been on top of their divisions for as long as I can remember, and Tateki Matsuda was loss #4. So next time one of you guys wants to talk about your friend/training partner/yourself and say “so and so should be higher because he only takes tough fights” I want you re-read this paragraph, because with the exception of Dennis Olson, nobody takes tough fights like Bennett. Shit, the top 2-3 guys don’t even take tough fights like that. So how should he be ranked? Tough call, but I think we made the right choice.
We also added an honorable mention to 155 because it’s absolutely stacked. I said years ago that I wouldn’t rank a top 10 at 135 until we had 10 guys deserving of a ranking, and the fact that there were 10 guys fighting at that weight doesn’t make it a “worthy” top 10…meaning I can’t rank a guy who is 2-4 against average opposition just because he fights at that weight while leaving 5-1 guys off another category because the division is stacked. We all know what a “ranked” fighter looks like…and our current group at 155 is amazing. There are easily 15 guys that are worthy of headlining shows that have fought their balls off and deserve to be ranked…so we did it.
I’m sure there is still a guy or two we missed because rankings are tough, especially when we’ve debated it back and forth 250 times. We can adjust if we need to, but we put some time into these and I think they are solid. Let me know what you guys think.
