CFX Thunder in the Dome LIVE REVIEW

byRick ~ April 25th, 2009

I talked to Gary from CFX and he said I should be able to get a wireless internet connection at tonight’s event, so we’ll have a live round by round play by play. I’ll be updating the page with the fight card and a confirmation that I can update live from this venue shortly after I arrive. Check back often for the live review.

Internet connection is up, but I can’t find an outlet to plug into.  Hopefully my battery lasts for the whole show.

Amateur fights:

Austin Pilotte vs. Tim Knight

Tim looks good in the early going and gets a takedown and nearly finishes a RNC, but Austin fights out and gets back to his feet, but is again taken down. He is mounted and Tim is landing shots at the endof the round.

R2-Tim lands some shots standing and gets another takedown. He takes mount and rains down punches for the TKO.

Tim Knight def Austin Pilotte by TKO

Ben Gelb vs. Ken Rooney

Gelb eats a few leg kicks and clinches then slams Ken to the mat. He’s landng punches from half guard and uses that to take the back andquickly finish the RNC.

Ben Gelb def Ken Rooney by RNC

Taylor Trahan vs. Ibrahim Tody

Tody gets a quick takedown and quickly mounts.  He works hard to keep the mount but doesn’t do anything with it. At the endof the round, Taylor gets out and lands some big shots aftrer he avoids a guillotine attempt. I was just made aware that Tody ate an illegal knee while he was down and his nose may be broken. The ref didn’t see it and they are right back to the action in R2.

R2-After they exchange standing up, Tody gets another takedown and again mounts. As Taylor tries to escape, Tody locks in an arm bar and Taylor fightts it off for about 90 seconds and ultimately escapes.

R3-Tody wins by standing guillotine after a big slam.

Ibrahim Tody def Taylor Trahan by guillotine choke.

Shawn Nichols vs. Lowell Zangri

Lowell takes Shawn down and mounts after a scramble. Lowell is landing from the mount but Shawn is looking good. He is scrambling but gets caught in a RNC.

Lowell Zangri def Shawn Nichols by RNC

Shawn Baker vs. Neil Woodworth

Shawn Baker has an amazing indian head dress and has a ton of fans screaming his name.  Shawn looks amped up. He gets a takedown but they are back up quickly. Neil works a takedown of his own and passes. They scramble and Neil is working a guillotine.  Baker avoids and they keep scrambling. The round ends with Neil punching from top half guard.

R2-Baker throws a front kick and falls back. Neil gets top position and lands a few HUGE punches for the KO win. Similar to Rashad Evans vs. Forrest Griffin.

Neil Woodworth def Shawn Baker by TKO.

Jason Sarbacker vs. Greg Jarvis

Sarbacker lands a big right, then finishes on the ground. Sarbacker looks awesome and will do well at pro.

Jason Sarbacker def Greg Jarvis by KO

Pro Fights:

Joe Faucher vs. Evan Parker

Joe gets a quick takedown but Evan sweeps and quickly finishes an arm bar.

Evan Parker def Joe Faucher by arm bar.

Ryan Luttrell vs. Mike Amoroso

Ryan takes him down to half guard and lands several punches against the fence. Mike tries a triangle but Ryan uses is to pass. Ryan is landing a ton, and he eventually takes the back and finishes the RNC.

Ryan Luttrell def Mike Amoroso by RNC.

Ryan Hackney vs. Joe Kavey

Kavey looks to be in the best shape of his career. He lands a few good knees andf Ryan takes him down hard but Kavey nearly catches him in a guillotine. Ryan is landing some semi-big shots from the top. Big power, but they are landing to the forehead and body.  He’s now landing big from the top, but one at a time. Kavey is fighting back, but taking a beating. Ryan looks tired at the end of the round.

R2-Ryan takes him down and passes to side mount. He’s landing knees to the body. Ryan starts landing really big punches and Kavey turtles and Ryan takes the back and finishes the RNC.

Ryan Hackney def Joe Kavey by RNC

Chris Cape vs. Kenny Hazard

Hazard is all over Cape in the early going, and after a takedown from Hazard, he lets out a scream and has dislocated his shoulder.

Chris Cape def Kenny Hazard by TKO (injury)

Adam Quit vs. Nick Drummond

They clinch and both guys land short shots, Nick takes him down hard and mounts. He flurries and doesn’t stop until the ref pulls him off.

Nick Drummond def Adam Quit by TKO

Mike Young vs. Ross Warriner

They both throw bombs to open things up and Ross lands a big hook and drops Mike. He lands in mount and quickly finishes with punches.

Ross Warriner def Mike Young by TKO

Shawn Galano vs. Ken Avery

Galano does a very quick glove tap followed by a flurry and knocks him out with a huge uppercut in just over 10 seconds.

Shawn Galano def Ken Avery by TKO.

Lee Beane vs. Jason Dolloff

Dolloff checks a leg kick and trips Lee down, but he’s right back up. Lee then pushes him to the fence and takes him down. He lands several hard punches for the TKO win in 38 seconds.

Rick Hawn vs. Dan Ford

Dan Ford is a very traditional Ninjitsu figher (that was a quote from Mike Varner) and he is a last minute replacement for Robby Roberts, who was forced to pull out last night. Dan throws a big combo and tagged Rick pretty good. Rick clinches and throws him to the mat. He’s landing big body shots and mounts Dan. He lands some bombs and wins by nasty TKO.

Rick Hawn def Dan Ford by TKO

Fernando Rivera vs. Jason Dublin

Big leg kicks from Fernando open things up and they bother Dublin.  Dublin lands some punches and jumps on Fernando’s back and nearly finishes the RNC but Rivera works out and gets top position. Dublin works for the arm bar but Rivera escapes and lands punches that hurt, and nearly stop Dublin.  He ties him up, and is able to get back to his feet  though. A right hook to the balls of Dublin halts the action. They get back into it with a clinch and a takedown from Rivera. Dublin uses the fence to get back up and Rivera is landing huge punches  to the head. Dublin looks hurt but he fires back and rocks Rivera! The last 30 seconds of round 1 was as good as I’ve ever seen a round end.

R2-Rivera throws a spinning back kick and they go right back to trading. Rivera shoots and Dublin sprawls and takes top position. He passes to side mount then mounts and starts hammering away andRivera verbally taps.

Jason Dublin def Fernando Rivera by submission from strikes

Great night of fights from CFX in a new venue that I hope they use again.

first of all I was not knocked out and second of all Galan suckered me whe i touched his gloves There will be a rematch and I guarentee there will be no touch of gloves.

  7. The Sultan on April 26th, 2009 2:25 AM

    also congrats to Nick Drummond.

  8. Reep on April 26th, 2009 10:21 AM

Damn….another glove touch sucker punch fighter, too bad! When I ever fight, there will def. be NO GLOVE TOUCH!! The ref should always bring the fighters to the middle, explain his directions, then give them a chance to touch. When the bell rings, nothing but fighting!

  9. greg on April 26th, 2009 10:43 AM

that sucks if that’s what happened ken.

  10. Rick on April 26th, 2009 2:37 PM

Ken…we all know “knock out” is a term that doesn’t only apply to guys who are sleeping for several minutes. You are right, you weren’t knocked unconscious, but the fight ended by TKO.

As far as getting suckered…I agree 100% that you had your hands down and weren’t ready to get cracked the way you did., however I don’t think Galano did it intentionally. I’m always the first guy to shit on guys who fake glove taps to sucker a guy, and from where I was sitting, I could see he had his right hand cocked back, and was going to lead with a big right. He telegraphed it from halfway across the ring and it looked to me like he wasn’t expecting to touch gloves, and gave a quick tap followed by the right he planned on throwing.

It was a very quick tap, then a bomb that got you in some trouble which set up the flurry that ended the fight. I agree with that 100%. I’d like to see the rematch also…however, I don’t think Galano intentionally faked a glove tap to sucker you. Normally guys touch gloves, then step back a little and start the fight…he rushed across the ring ready to attack and tapped quickly followed by a flurry. There was no pause on his part after the tap.

Again, we’re right back to our monthly discussion on glove taps. I always prefer a glove tap, and I hate when guys refuse to tap, or sucker guys, but I understand the other side that says that you should always be ready to get suckered. I really don’t know how to remedy the problem, but I do want to see a rematch.

  11. D.Pasquarelli on April 26th, 2009 6:40 PM

I think that there should be a touching of gloves before round one begins at the center of the ring and then if guys agree beforehand they can touch up after the round starts. I believe strongly in good sportsmanship but am not a fan of touching gloves before or after every round as some fighters now seem to do. By the way Rick, I should be able to do someting in May or June if needed.

  12. kavery39 on April 26th, 2009 7:15 PM

    Rick,

Just to let you know, I looked across the cage at Galano and asked him if he wanted to tap gloves and he said yes. The ref also confirmed that we were going to tap gloves. It was not done on his part and he just started unloading. No big deal, crap happens, but like I said a rematch will happen and no gloves will be touched. Great card all around though and a fun night for the fans.

As a fan of local MMA shows it is disappointing to see such a highly anticipated fight as Avery/Galano end before it even started. This was a great matchup: two heavyweights that love to stand up and bang. From my 4th row seat I saw Avery hold up a hand to tap. Galano ignored the gesture and went straight to thowing punches.

Fans that are paying a minimum of $45 a ticket have a reasonable expectation to see fair, competitive fights. Its unfortunate that this lapse in sportsmanship marred an otherwise great night of fights. The rest of the card was excellent and CFX puts on a good show.

  14. Rick on April 26th, 2009 8:10 PM

That certainly changes my opinion on the situation. Thanks for the info, ken…and it sucks that it went down the way it did.

  15. nick drummond on April 26th, 2009 8:45 PM

thanks eddie.much love.and thanks to everyone supporting me.
yo eddie when you come back to visit?

  17. Hagopian on April 27th, 2009 9:07 AM

Very well run event. Congratulations to the CFX team for putting on a great show. We’re glad you made it to NH.

  18. Jason Dolloff on April 28th, 2009 11:16 AM

Mike, Gary, and Linda did a Great job running this event at the NH Dome. The largest place I have ever fought next to the Mass Mutial Center in Springfield for EFI,.!!! There was so much room that maybe not all of it was used to its potential. This and only one set of restrooms could be the only negative thing I could see. The production, and professionalism towards everyone seemed to be top notch. The event was run with great people who knew what needed to be done. The vendors (maybe not enough of them) had some of the best logo’s around. Hoodlum Fight wear did great with gloves, always nice finding a pair of XXL. that fit after taping hands. Classy venue with a growing Future who treat the fighters in the highest regards I really like to say Thank You CFX,.!!!

  19. Jason Dolloff on April 28th, 2009 11:24 AM

By the Way, I have Mad respect for Mike Varner after seeing how he called out some rowdy fans for there disrespectful nature when one of the fighters got hurt . Big Kudos’ Varner as much as I think you should of let Linda do the talking cause she is better looking then you(Gary please don’t be mad just stating obvious) you stood up for all that ever ventured into the Cage/ring. As far as you said “We are now Boyz,.!”??? Well I will always give you a “Hell Ya..!!!” —”Brother”

  20. Jason Dolloff on April 28th, 2009 11:33 AM

Lee Beane is for REAL,… I look forward to being able to say in the future that I got to fight him. Cody Lightfoot was in house to see fight and with that I think the sooner the fight happens the better for both of them. They get it over with then hopefully work together to make each other excel to the the top! Both are stand up Guys with great wrestling backgrounds. CFX atthe Jungle Plex is rumor? Hope all works out, I look to see the CFX 3rd Show a CHARM,..!!!!

  21. Jason Dolloff on April 28th, 2009 11:45 AM

Last sorry to post so much at once however my internet was down till last night along with the phone,??? Thats what happens when you “Rob from peter to pay Paul” to get to the fight. With the Commission in the house and watching the refs do there job its was obvious that No fighters wanted to leave the out come to the judges including Me? I wish Steve the Ref would have let Lee hit me atleast 5 more times. I watched fight after and understand why he stopped it. It did look bad and I did feel the Big Knee however call me sadistic I like the Black-n-Blues and besides being overwhelmed I was never out. I got right up Pissed only at myself for getting in that position and Not even a Black eye??? My kids were a little let down Ya they are sadistics also!!!

  22. TheSolid1 on April 28th, 2009 4:10 PM

AWESOME NIGHT OF FIGHTS. GREAT VENUE. LOOKING FORWARD TO FIGHTING FOR THEM AGAIN. THANKS LINDA AND GARY FOR THE OP.

Great Show. CFX goes 2 for 2. Fernando/Dublin was an absolute war! Looking forward to the next one!

  24. Jason Dolloff on May 4th, 2009 8:04 PM

After seeing pics and not getting any Bruises or anything I went out last week and took a tree in the head while cutting fire wood. I did not do it but the guy running machinery beside me got a little pushy and the top of the tree he was on was rotten. Long story short It didn’t drop me just stung and bled like a stuck pig! Three staples after Vicki made me go to Hospital and its all Steve the refs fault?? If you would have let Lee Beane give me a little more while I was down I probly would not have went to work last week.
