Our Fighter of the Month for January 2009 is one of the most talented and most hyped fighters we’ve seen out of Massachusetts in quite some time. About 18 months ago, Ken Stone was almost a mythical creature that several, normally intelligent people would talk about like he was Big-Foot or the Locke Ness Monster. Very well respected MMA people used to say things like “If this guy ever fights MMA, it’s going to be crazy.”
People who knew Kenny and had worked out with Kenny either agreed, or said something like “He’s a great grappler, but MMA is different than grappling.” No matter their answer, they were eager to see him fight…but the guys who didn’t know Kenny would be quick to argue and say “No way, if there was a kid out here THAT good, I’d know about him.”
Ken isn’t the only guy who people had argued about in this way, but typically those guys who are talked about like mythical creatures don’t actually fight, and many of us never thought we’d see Kenny fight on a regular basis.
Fast forward to January 3rd, 2009 and he’d stopped 6 guys in a row, one of which being the previously undefeated Chris Simmons, with 3 submissions and 3 TKO’s. On Jan 3rd, Kenny took on Nam Nguyen, who had an undefeated record through 4 fights, all took place in Vietnam. The fight opened up with a body kick from each fighter, but then the fight hit the mat and it was all Kenny. He went on to win by TKO in the first, bringing his pro record to 7-0 with 4 TKO and 3 Submissions.
