WCF 6 Preview

bycolinv ~ March 7th, 2009

After much anticipation, WCF 6 is finally here. On Saturday March 14 it will be brought to us from their usual location at the Shirner’s Auditorium in Wilmington, MA, and the card looks stronger than ever. Combine that with an autograph session with UFC, WEC and Affliction Fighters, as well as the first ever WCF title fight ever, and this is a can’t miss event.

Here is what the card looks like, and this is the VERY tentative fight order.

Jeff Remmick (Guy Chase) vs. Josh Mellen (USMMA) 185

Jeff is 1-0 and picked up his first win over a kick boxer by submission at the No Boundary show back in October, and Josh is making his pro debut, and if he’s like the rest of USMMA, he’ll be well conditioned and well rounded. Should be a fun fight between big guys to get the show started.

Jay Fortier (Burgess) vs. Robby Roberts (Bruteforce) 170

The fact that this fight is so early speaks to the number of quality fights on this card. Jay and Robby have been on the wrong end of some tough fights lately, but both guys are tough, both come to fight and both are looking to get back on track with a win. Robby will have a huge reach advantage, but Jay should be the stronger of the two. This could be a war.

Ryan Quinn (ATT) vs. Travis Coyle (USMMA) 170

Ryan has looked good as an amateur and will be making his pro debut against scrappy Travis Coyle. Ryan will be the more technical BJJ guy, but Travis has more ring experience and isn’t afraid to let the hands fly.

Jose Lopez (Ravenous) vs. Damien Trites (Wai-Kru) 155

I can’t say enough about this fight. This is a huge fight for both guys, and both guys love to stand and bang it out. Both are coming off wins in which they put a beating on their opponents, and Damien has the better boxing, but Jose has the better kicks. If these guys decide to keep it standing…forget about fight of the night, this has fight of the year potential.

Nik Patnaude (Burgess) vs. Jimmy Grant (Bombsquad) 145

Everyone knows Nik Patnaude, and he bounced back from his decision loss to Matt Martin with a submission win over Josh Spearman. Nik has heavy hands, and good submissions. His weak spot looks to be his takedown defense, and Jimmy could really push him there. Not much is known about Jimmy, and he’s making his pro debut. He wrestled in college, and his roommate was former WCF and current UFC fighter Jon Jones. Jimmy is definitely more of a grappler than a striker and it’ll be interesting to see how he deals with Nik’s strength and punching power.

Billy Flynn (SSSF) vs. Rick Hawn (Sit Yod Tong) 170

Rick has amazing judo (rumor has it he was an Olympic judo guy?) and showed big ground and pound in his pro debut. Billy Flynn is a bad dude, and he’s the type of guy you want on your side if a bar fight breaks out. Flynn is 2-0 and Hawn is 1-0, and neither guy wants to taste defeat. The fight strategy in this one seems pretty simple. Flynn will likely look to avoid the clinch and beat Rick up, and Rick will look to get inside and dump Flynn on his head. We’ll see which guy can implement their game plan, and the winner of this fight could be ready to take on a top 10 opponent in their next fight.

Chris “The Shocka” Grandmaison (Sit Yod Tong) vs. Anthony Leone (Bombsquad) 145

It seems every year the Bombsquad produces a stud 145 pounder. First it was Spencer Paige, then it was Franchi, and now they have 4-0 Anthony Leone. He’s an aggressive fighter who is the best BJJ guy of the 3 fighters I mentioned above. He spent some time training with BJ Penn, and he’s taking a big step up in competition with Chris Grandmaion. Chris is one of the areas most talented 145ers, and is coming off a recent win at GFL. He was on a pretty good roll until he tore his pectoral muscle in the opening moments of his fight with Jon Bermudez, and he was talked about as a top 3 guys locally. Chris is still a top 3 talent, it’s now up to him to get back to beating tough opponents. This is a huge fight for both guys, and one of the biggest fights on the card.

Stephen Stengel vs. Scott Rehm (USMMA/Florian Martial Arts) 185

This is another fight with fight of the year potential. Stengel has always taken the toughest of the tough fights around, and his 3-5 record reflects that, but his losses were to Phil McIntyre (Twice), Bobby Dias, Nate LaMotte and Jamie Campbell. He has won two out of his last 3, and is coming off a stunning KO win over Jay Fortier. Stengel is a brawler with dynamite in his hands and a long reach, which can get guys in some serious trouble. Scott is a smart veteran fighter with good head movement, and he is the more technical of the two. Both guys prefer to stand and bang, but both guys have pretty good submissions also. However, I’m not sure this one will hit the ground, unless a punch knocks someone down. I think their wrestling is similar, and if either guy tries to take the other down, they’ll likely have a hard time of it and say “hell with it, let’s bang” and go right back to trading.

Nick Evangelous (Fenix Fight Club) vs. Rodrigo Almeida (BMAC) 155

Both guys are undefeated and are looking to climb closer to the WCF title picture. Almeida works as hard as anyone in the gym, and this will be another big test for him. Both guys have slick BJJ, and neither wants to taste defeat for the first time.

John Benoit (SYT/Renzo Gracie NH) vs. Glenn Brown (Green Mountain Boys) 155

I’m not sure it gets much bigger than this one. Benoit is now 7-0, and has submitted both of his opponents at 155. He’s really big for 155, and he’s stepping up in competition a bit a 155 with this one. Glenn is super tough, super aggressive and has been in the title picture a couple times on other shows. While he does have some losses, they were to studs. Both guys are very good wrestlers and very good BJJ guys, and both hit hard, but aren’t known for their stand up. It’s fights like this where two guys are near mirrors of the other that we usually see something new from one of the guys. They’ll be forced to use all of their game, as the wrestling might be nullified.

Shawn DePaul (MSA/Mickey Ward’s TC) vs. Greg Rebello (SYT/USMMA) 195

Their first fight was a battle in which Shawn was about 20 seconds away from winning a decision. You know when you watch a fight and a guy is 20 seconds away from losing and you’re screaming at the tv “you’re losing! Time is almost up, throw everything you have at him!” and for some reason the guy just keeps fighting cautions? Well, Greg was about to lose, and he listened to the screams and started bombing on Shawn in the corner and landed several clean punches and earned the stoppage. It was a great fight, and an explosive ending. The loss has haunted Shawn a bit, and he’s looking for revenge. Greg too has something to prove, and he wants this win to be dominant. Neither fighter is the same as they were the first time. Shawn has been working on his boxing a ton, and he’s no longer just a wrestler. Greg has also worked his boxing more, but has also tightened up his takedown defense. I really don’t know who wins this one, but it won’t be boring!

Mike Dolce (Wolf’s Lair) vs. Nuri Shakir (MSA/MMATC) 170

Dolce picked up a win on Season 7 of TUF, and ultimately lost to Jesse Taylor to end his stint on the reality show. He’s a very big and strong guy who swings for the fences. If you read the Nuri Shakir article, you should all know enough about him by now. He’s a warrior who’ll punch you in the face, then tell you how stupid you look when he punches you in the face. I haven’t been this excited for a fight in a while. This should be a war with both guys trying to knock the other’s head off.

Dan Bonnell (Sit Yod Tong) vs. Dan Ferrer (Santos) 135 Pound WCF Title Fight

Very interesting fight. Bonnell seems to have the better hands, but Ferrer’s hands are good too. Ferrer has the better BJJ, but Bonnell’s BJJ is good too. Their wrestling? Too close to call. Both guys are well rounded, and both are coming off wins at WCF 5. If it were a kickboxing match, I’d take Bonnell. If it were a grappling match, I’d take Ferrer..but I wouldn’t bet on either one. This is an incredibly even match up, and this is what title fights should be. Fight strategy will be very important in this one.
