CFX introduced their brand to the local fans in a big way this past weekend. The venue was pack, and I’m told it was a sell out, and the crowd seemed to be into the show the whole time…even when Varner broke out the t-shirt sling-shot. They had a whopping 17 fights, with 6 amateur and 11 pro.
You’ll have to bear with me on the team names because they weren’t listed on their bout sheet of the program.
The amateur fights were up first, and I walked in a few minutes late (since when do Saturday shows start at 7:30?) so I missed the first fight. Justin Corneglia (Boneyard) defeated Donny Hershey (Misfits)by Split Decision.
Jimmy Davidson (SYT) looked great in his win over Marcus Johnson (Hoodlum). The majority of round 1 was spent on the ground with Jimmy pounding from the top and working position. Round two was more of the same with Jimmy earning the TKO from the top.
Josh Henderson (MMATC) looked great in a UD win over Nick Grendall. Most of the fight was on the mat with Josh taking mount several times throughout the fight but Nick did a good job avoiding damage.
Marquis Brown (Simmler) was dominant in his TKO win over Graeme Prue (Boneyard). Graeme is super tough and was working a triangle from the bottom, and Marquis slammed him hard to avoid the submission and just pounded and pounded the whole fight. I expect Marquis to have a very good pro career.
I missed part of the Jeff Cesaitis (MMATC) vs. Bradford Conley (Bishops) fight and only caught the end, which was Jeff winning by arm bar.
Greg Olsen (BMAC) and Brad Spence (Ultimate Fitness) fought an absolute war with both fighters landing bombs the whole fight. Both guys ate their fair share of shots, but in the end Greg was able to land the bigger bombs and win via TKO in the 3rd.
Now onto the pro fights:
Nick Tzimas (MMATC) made quick work of Dan Morin in their fight, winning via arm bar in about 30 seconds.
Paul Labelle (MSA) pounded Joe Kavey hard in their fight, and won by first round TKO. It started on the feet with Paul landing a ton of unanswered punches on the mat.
Jose Sanchez (Dragon Warrior) shocked the pro Greg Mendes crowd in their fight, winning by UD. Greg had a big size advantage and landed some hard shots to start the fight, but Jose stayed composed and took the fight to the ground and pounded Greg for the better half of round one, and most of round 2. He opened up a bad cut on Greg in the 2nd round also, and that seemed to seal the round 10-8 and earn him the win.
Rick Hawn (SYT) was viscious in his TKO win over Bruno Decosta (BMAC). I’ve heard Rick was tough, but he looked flat out mean with his ground and pound. Once he had top position, he was relentless, and looks to hit like a truck.
Mike Zichelle (MMATC) landed a huge knee to the face of Mike Young that dropped him early in round one, and he followed up with a barrage of punches to seal the deal. Young can really take a shot by the way.
Ed Medeiros (Mendes TSD) started off strong in his fight with Shawn Galano (Eclectic Karate), but in the end it was Galano who had more in the tank. He was able to get top position and pound away at Ed, and it looked like he went out for a bit. Big win for Galano.
Scott Rehm (USMMA) vs. Adrian Coleman (Gillete) was a very good fight with Adrian getting a takedown in round one and holding top position, but Scott was pounding away from the bottom and working the whole time. In round two, Scott stuffed a takedown, landed some big shots, and tripped Adrian to the ground and landed in mount. He pounded away for the TKO win, and looked better than ever.
Travis Lerchen was all over Dan Conway (Bishops) to start the fight, and was dominating position, and landing some shots. It was a clean round for Travis, but round 2 was all Dan. Dan got a quick takedown, pounded from the top and grabbed a guillotine for the win. After the fight Travis immediately grabbed his eye and said he was poked in the eye several times. He did have a cut under his eye that didn’t look like it was caused by a punch or elbow. I was told there were warnings to Dan about fingers in or near the eyes. I didn’t see any fingers in the eye, but I do want to comment that Travis did talk to the arbitrator but I believe the win stands for Dan.
Lee Beane (Bishops) looked strong in his win over Diego Santos (BMAC). He landed some brutal body shots that made me turn away. He basically looked like a 270 pound version of Nate Kittredge.
Dan Simmler (Simmler BJJ) looked a little tentative in his fight with Everilton “Soneca” Silva (Fenix Fight Team). Soneca came out banging and got the fight to the mat and was pounding from the top. He didn’t look to have Dan in a ton of trouble, but looked to be winning the fight. In round two, it was more of the same, until Dan landed a HUGE upkick to the face that really hurt Soneca and he basically fell into a triangle, and Dan squeezed it for the win.
In the main event, Rigo Dominicci and Mike Littlefield both put on a great performance and fought their balls off in their fight. Mike came out strong and was landing shot after shot in the early part of round 1. Rigo came on late and landed some big shots on the ground, but I still thought Mike did enough to win the round. Round 2 was all Rigo, and he looked to have Mike hurt towards the end of the round. I had it scored 19-19 after two rounds, but the judges disagreed. The scores for round 1 were 10-9 Mike, 10-9 Mike and 19-9 Rigo. Round two had scores of 10-8 Rigo, 10-9 Rigo and 10-9 Rigo, so the final cards read 19-19, 19-18 Rigo and 20-18 Rigo. Great fight from both guys, and this was a huge win for Rigo.
