Untamed 20 – The Time Has Come – April 12th 2008 Boxborough, MA
Untamed 20 was one of my favorite nights of fights in a long time. The venue is great! Anyone who doesn’t feel like the drive to Boxborough is worth it missed a spectacular night of action. There is so much energy in the place and it starts with the management of the venue. Anytime the manager is cage side talking MMA you know they want you there and that makes for a very exciting atmosphere. The crowd doubled from the last time there and there is no reason next time they shouldn’t have 1000 people in there. It is right off 495 and now my second favorite Full Force venue..of course my favorite (Plymouth) is a stone’s throw for me so does that really count? You can bet your ass I will be back in Boxborough next time…..
Amateur Bouts
James Beane 0-0 (Green Mtn Boys) vs. Jason Russell 0-0 (Waste Land)
155 lbs.
Rd. 1
They come out and start slugging, James starts to land some uppercuts, some more, Jason ducks his head and gets caught and the ref steps in and the Green Mountain Boys are off to a good start.
James Bean wins via TKO (Ref Stoppage) :17 Rd. 1
Billy Mcneil 0-0 (Murphy’s) vs. Donny Flowers 0-0 (AMMA)
150 lbs.
Rd.1
The first round was full of takedown attempts by Donny, with Billy trying to get his striking going. Donny got a couple slams and takedowns with Donny having mount at one point, the round ends with Donny landing some nice shots on Billy, nice GNP from Donny..
Rd. 2
Billy lands a nice head kick to start this round and Donny again gets a takedown, the round continues much like the first with Donny getting some takedowns and Billy working his striking both from standing and while on the ground, Donny mounts again this round. Billy escaped the mount by sneaking out the back door, but Donny gets another takedown and the rounds end on the ground.
Rd. 3
The beginning of the third round starts and Billy says F this and lands a NASTY spinning back kick to the mid-section that puts Donny on the mat, he follows that up with some strikes from up top to end it.
This was the classic Grappler vs. Striker match up and Donny showed some great GNP skills and was probably winning the fight for the multiple takedowns. However, Billy landed a sick kick and that was that. My exact commentary I have was “Holy Crap”…
Billy Mcneil wins via TKO (Ref Stoppage) :10 Rd. 3
Nik Patnaude 1-0 (Burgess) vs. James Murrin 0-1 (Boneyard)
135 lbs.
Rd. 1
Nik got a takedown and controlled the first round, he worked some strikes from up top and defended James’ multiple submission attempts, that round was almost all Nik landing some punches while in James’ guard after the initial takedown. It appeared that James had Nik in an arm bar though as the bell sounded..
Rd. 2
This round was a lot of clinch work to start but Nik eventually got a double leg slam. Nik kept trying to pass James’ half-guard but couldn’t seem to do it. Nik worked a guillotine at one point but James Murrin is a tough tough kid despite the fact he looks 12. James escapes the guillotine, before moving to side control and lands some hammer fists before going back into Nik’s half-guard as the round closes.
Rd. 3
Nik landed a nice body kick, and James landed some nice knees to start, good exchanges before Nik gets another double leg takedown. James worked some submission attempts but again Nik defends them. The fight ends with Nik escaping another arm bar attempt by James.
Nik Patnaude wins via split decision
This was a very good fight, Nik had the takedowns but James was very active with the sub attempts, it’s only a matter of time before James starts to add some W’s to his record, great showing by both fighters for sure.
Pro Bouts
Seth Davis 0-1 (NEFFC) vs. Joey Woo 0-1 (Mayhem)
170 lbs.
Rd.1
Round one was a lot of ground work it started with Joey getting a double leg takedown. Seth did a good job of stopping Joey from posturing, but Joey got some clean shots to the body and head from top position. Seth tried an arm bar early at one point, but Joey defended. Joey tried passing a few times but Seth held him in check. Joey escaped another arm bar attempt. Seth sweeps at one point but Joey immediately gets him on his back again, Seth tried for a guillotine but realized it wasn’t there and let it go. Seth sweeps again and gets side control briefly before moving to full mount. Seth landed some nice shots from mount, Joey rolled and Seth tried to take his back. The round ends after Joey escapes out the back door and ends up in Seth’s full guard.
Rd. 2
Joey starts to land some leg kicks while Seth lands some punches. Much of the first part of the round was spent against the fence with both fighters exchanging knees. Seth attempted another guillotine while Joey grabs a single and he lands in Seth’s half-guard. Joey escapes and stands, before going back into Seth’s guard. Joey stuffed a couple sweep attempts at one point. Not a ton of action here. Joey finally passes to side control. Mount attempt gets denied. The ref stands them up. They trade kicks and both guys look tired. Joey gets caught with a right hand but gets a single after Seth goes for a flying knee and the second round ends with Joey in side control.
Joey Woo wins via UD
Gary Dubel 0-1 (Bull Pit) vs. Leandro Barcellos 0-0 (BTT)
160 lbs.
They touch em’ up and Leandro shoots and Gary stuffs him and Gary pushes Leandro into the cage and Leandro goes for a throw and they end up on the ground, the ref steps in and stops the fight as Gary has verbally submitted.
Gary clearly blew his knee out somewhere in the action as he is in severe pain. After about 5 minutes he leaves the cage with the help of his team. I hope for a speedy recovery for Gary.
Leandro Barcellos wins via submission (Verbal) Rd. 1
Jay Fortier 1-2 (Burgess) vs. Jack Welby 2-2 (Boneyard)
175 lbs.
Rd.1
The round starts with both men trying to work the striking with Jay getting the better of it landing a nice leg kick that briefly puts Jack down. Jack attempts a takedown, but it’s defended and he pushes Jay against the cage. Jack finally gets the single but Jay throws up a triangle attempt and locks it in forcing Jack to tap.
Jay Fortier wins via submission (Triangle) 1:41 Rd. 1
Brad Bernard 0-2 (Bucket Brigade) vs. Jon Jones 0-0 (Bomsquad)
205 lbs.
Rd.1
Right to the action in this one, Jon goes for a low leg kick but misses and jumps on Brad’s back. They go to the ground and Jon tries to get in his hooks, Brad defends but Jon gets mount before going back to his back, they stand and Brad lands a right while Jon presses Brad to the fence. Brad pushes Jon towards the other side of the cage but Jon lands a sick belly to belly suplex, nice! Brad stands and Jon lands an uppercut that ends it.
Jon Jones wins via TKO (Ref Stoppage) 1:45
Josh Yox 3-3 (Bull Pitt) vs. Mike Laliberte 5-2-1 (Irish)
185 lbs.
Rd.1
As soon as this fight starts Josh lands a big right that seems to have hurt Mike badly, Mike grabs onto Josh and has him in full guard probably trying to recover. After tries to posture for awhile but Mike holds on. The round continues with each guy trying to get position until Josh gets Mike’s back and goes for the RNC, he has a hook in but not both and rolls him but damn Mike is a freaking warrior and holds on and gets the top arm off and spins and ends on top in Josh’s guard. Wow. Josh sweeps to mount and briefly goes for the back again, they scramble and Mike gets side control. They scramble and Mike lands a nice suplex. Mike ends the round switching between side and mount while landing some knees.
Rd. 2
So at this point my voice recorded didn’t record for the second round but from what I remember Mike had completely regained his senses from the shot he took to open the fight. He got a takedown maybe and was dominating the ground until he eventually worked an Amerikana for the tap.
Mike Laliberte wins via submission (Amerikana) 2:25 Rd. 2
That was a great fight, Josh looked great after he rocked Mike, but Mike hung in there and battled right back. We saw some great Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling. Mike looks strong as an ox and at 6-2-1 is starting to make some noise for sure.
John Sola 1-2 (Burgess) vs. Joe Kavey 0-3 (Waste Land)
155 lbs.
Rd.1
This was a quick one they clinched for awhile and exchanged knees before Joe managed to get a trip but ended up getting arm barred after a quick scramble off the trip..it was ruled an arm bar, but it appeared to be a shoulder lock someone correct me if they know what it was.
John Sola wins via submission (arm bar)
Ben Desfosses 1-0 (Bucket Brigade) vs. Joe DeChaves 1-0 (Boneyard)
155 lbs.
Rd. 1
Right after they touched gloves there was a quick takedown, but Joe sweeps and off a scramble grabs on a guillotine attempt and tries to sink it and Ben fights out of it. They scramble again and stand to a clinch. Joe lands some nice knees. Ben lands a few knees now and Ben presses Joe to the cage. Ben gets a takedown to side control. Joe tries to get back to half-guard but Ben defends, and takes mount, Ben postures and Joe rolls and Ben sinks the RNC for the tap.
Ben Desfosses wins via submission (RNC) 2:30 Rd. 1
Glenn Brown 2-1 (Green Mtn. Boys) vs. Luis Felix 1-0 (Burrill)
155 lbs.
Rd. 1
Glenn misses a big head kick to start this and Luis throws one of his own that misses. They circle and try to work the strikes. Luis gets a takedown, but Glenn immediately rolls him and they end up with Glenn in Luis’ full guard. Glenn stands up and grabs a heel hook. He switches between the straight ankle and heel hook and that ish looks tight, he really exploded for it and I can’t believe Luis is hanging on, Luis spins into Glenn and defends, now he grabs onto the fence and lands a right, the ref takes a point, he grabs the fence again and punches, loses another point but it doesn’t matter because he then lands a left that puts Glenn out.
Awesome fight the action was so fast I can’t do it justice by typing this. That heel hook was def tight as it takes Luis a few minutes until he can walk out of the ring, but he hung on and got the KO. I want a rematch now, right now in my living room. The crowd was going crazy, both guys had a mess of fans behind them. The energy in this place is awesome.
Luis Felix wins via KO 2:07 Rd. 1
Tom Lawlor 2-0 (Tampa) vs. Travis Bartlet 0-0 (Irish)
205 lbs.
Rd. 1
Tom gets a double to start it and immediately looks to take Travis’ back. He gets both hooks in and flattens Travis out. Tom starts landing some punches and switches to the sub attempt with the RNC. Travis defends nicely for a while, but Tom starts dropping some hammer fists and hooks and goes for the RNC again and gets it for the win.
Tom Lawlor wins via submission (RNC) 1:10 Rd. 1
Petrus Walker 2-2-1 (Link) vs. Josh Watson 1-0 (AMMA)
225 lbs.
Rd. 1
They circle and Petrus lands a glancing head kick, now he misses another. Josh comes in and misses a flying knee and they clinch. They exchange a little and they clinch again. Josh misses a superman punch to a clinch. Petrus looks for a takedown but can’t get it. They clinch again and break and start exchanging and Josh gets the better of it, they engage again and Josh lands some big rights and lefts, then a couple of BIG rights find their mark and the ref stops it.
Josh Watson wins via TKO (Ref Stoppage) 1:52 Rd. 1
Main Event
Full Force Productions Middleweight Title
Nate Kittredge 5-1 (Green Mtn. Boys) vs. Lance Everson 11-5 (Boneyard)
Rd. 1
They circle for a few and try to find their range. Lance grabs Nate and pushes him into the fence before getting a nice takedown. They are only there for a second before Nate rolls Lance and they stand. Lance throws a knee that glances, quick exchange and now they start throwing some bombs, but nothing connects. Lance attempts a super man punch but misses and Lance goes for a double but Nate sprawls. They clinch and Nate pushes Lance against the fence, has wrist control. Lance throws some knees. They break and Nate lands a right that rocks Lance, Nate smells it, he throws some more power shots and Lance tries to return but Nate steps back and unloads an absolute B-O-M-B of a right that puts Lance out face down on the mat. There is nothing for Nate to do but stand over Lance and wait for the ref to call it.
Nate Kittredge wins via KO 1:34 Rd. 1
Who else started drooling when they saw this main event? It did not disappoint, it may have been a quick one but my goodness was that a sick fight. Just an absolute war, the stare down was worth the price of admission alone.
So anyone who is an MMA fan and misses the next show in Boxborough needs their head checked. That was such a great card. Like the last Untamed show a lot of the fights ended early but it had NOTHING to do with mismatches. Just great fighter’s imposing their will to end fights. I can’t wait to see Kittredge again, and Felix, and Laliberte. Three awesome fights that any one of them could have earned Fight of the Night.
For those of you who missed the show Mike Varner got the loudest “Hell Yeah” I have ever heard, and unfortunately, it was directed at the MassMMA readers. He loves MassMMA but he loves irritating the MassMMA readers even more.
The Green Mountain Boys are really bringing it and they all look like Grizzly Adams. If anyone can host the audio for the Main Event I would love to post it. It really proves how great this fight was. Later, TomC out…
