Tomorrow night, Western Massachusetts will be hit with another exciting card from Extreme Fighting International. Coming off a hot first show, the promotion’s sophomore effort looks to be exciting, even if it has to compete with Eastern Massachusetts’s Untamed card. Let’s look at the fights. First off, the fights that I have no friggin’ idea about.
Matthew Vincelette (Ishin Ryu, 0-0) vs. Roberto Concepcion (0-1)
Ruben “High Voltage” Gonzalez (Silver Dragon, 0-0) vs. Devin Anderson (Dog Pound, 0-0)
Don Carlo-Clauss (Fight Factory, 0-0) vs. Travis “The Villain” Lerchen (Dog Pound, 0-0)
KJ Banach (Fight Factory, 0-0) vs. Ethan Kean (Whitley’s, 0-1)
Raymond Newkirk (Tai-Kai, 0-0) vs. Johann Van Woedern (Dog Pound, 0-1)
Randy Smith (Bomb Squad, 1-0) vs. Alonzo Hardnett (Whitley’s, 0-0)
Dan Keefe (Team Kineen, 2-0) vs. Ryan “Country” Verrett (Dog Pound, 0-1)
Both of these guys have experience from the Calloway Cup. Keefe won both his fights with strikes, whereas Verrett lost by rear naked choke. Although the records may be unbalanced, Verrett comes from a tough school in the Dog Pound. This should be an entertaining first fight of the night, but I have to predict a win for Keefe.
Eric Henry (Bomb Squad, 5-2) vs. Billy Erol (BMAC, 1-1)
Eric Henry has shown himself to do some awesome things. He landed a sick Judo through in his first fight before locking up a rear naked choke. He also likes to kick people’s legs until they’re a deep shade of purple. The only Erol fight I could find was a quick loss to the much bigger and strong Keith Jeffery. I don’t think that Henry will have the strength advantage on Erol that Jeffery did, but for Erol to win, he’s going to have to be game.
Daniel Codreneau (Silver Dragon, 0-0) vs. Billy Walsh (CBJMMA, 0-0)
I don’t know anything by Codreneau, but I know that Walsh won his first amateur fight by KO and has hair that resembles a snow cone. For those reasons and those reasons alone, I’m picking Walsh by KO.
Cory LaPlant (Bomb Squad, 3-2) vs. Corey Batchelder (BMAC, 2-0)
Batchelder’s wins come via decision over Brian Marois in the Calloway Cup and a guillotine choke over Dan Bonnell. LaPlant’s three wins have come from his hard strikes, two by TKO, but his losses have come via submission. I think that this one will be a great test for LaPlant before his entrance into the Combat Zone 145-pound tournament. If Batchelder can bring a strong submission game, then he can pull off the win. Otherwise, I think LaPlant takes it.
Joe Kavey (0-2) vs. Aguilano Brandao (BMAC, 7-1)
All but one of Brandao’s wins has come via submission, with the latest being an arm bar over powerhouse wrestler Chris Grandmaison. Kavey’s last loss was via submission and his first was a one-sided TKO. Although Kavey’s coming down in weight while Brandao is coming up, I gotta predict Brandao by submission in the first round.
Jerry Spiegel (LionKill, 10-23-1) vs. Tim Goodwin (American Karate and Fitness, 0-0)
MassMMA’s Fighter of the Month returns to the ring to take on Tim Goodwin. Goodwin, as far as I know, is a karate guy. EFI’s site lists his strengths as “will to survive.” Good luck, Tim, because you’ll be dealing with Spiegel’s own style of drunken jiu-jitsu and heavy hands. Will Goodwin be able to survive? Probably not, but at least this fight looks like a lot of fun, and hopefully sets up Spiegel vs. Torrey for the EFI Middleweight Title.
