AFO “Night of Champions” Preview

byRick ~ April 5th, 2009

After three very successful shows at the Braintree Sheraton Hotel and Convention Center, AFO, New England ’s up and coming MMA promoter has their most intriguing main event so far.

In what’s being called Night of ChampionsPound-for-Pound top dog Ken Stone, who fights out of South Shore Sportfighting and never backs down from a challenge, will face tough Eddie Felix on April 11 for AFO’s 145 pound title. “We are thrilled to have Ken back fighting for us,” stated AFO President Pete DiLorenzo. “He appeared on our January 3rd event, and we expect this to be one of the best matches in recent memory in the state.” Stone is one of the most entertaining, athletic guys you will see. Trained and managed by Scott Lockhart and Bill Mahoney, Stone is very likely to make the leap to the big leagues soon, and DiLorenzo hopes his local fans will turn out to see him in person while they can. “You don’t often see a guy like Ken on local shows. Come and see him, trust me, in person. A year from now, he’ll be on pay per view shows.”

Also appearing on the April 11th card will be Quincy ’s Chris Traietti, a former pro boxer making the jump to the cage. Pembroke’s Paddy Thompson will face Brandon Chagnon, who won an exciting decision over Traietti in February. Undefeated amateur Bryan Marino of InnerCircle Fight Team faces Team Fury’s Undefeated Kenny Rodrigues. The two 145 pounders have a combined record of 5-0. Someone’s O is about to go!

Super Heavyweight Chris Bagge will return against Ben “Cereal Killer” Cone. Waikru’s 205 pounder Eli Hawkins squares off against Matthew McQuenney which very well may end up the fight of the night. Tim O’Connell will face Isabel Franklin in what some are calling a grudge match. After Tim’s loss on Feb 21st and being called out by Franklin , there is a score to be settled.

Fighters from many other gyms including Doomsday in Chelsea , Extreme Kickboxing in Roslindale, Craig Dunn MMA, Joe Kavey MMA and Brute Force MMA will appear.

Hey the site is looking great, Rick. Well done! – I do have one question and i’m sorry to post it on this forum AFO guys but is there a way where I can change my own password to something that isn’t impossible to remember? Thanks. – Good luck to everyone on this card.

A full list of fights for our card will be released April 2nd. We had to wait longer so no other show tried to steal whole fights again. Read all about it on our site

  12. Rick on March 27th, 2009 11:20 AM

I know it can be done, but I’m not sure how. I get an email everytime someone registers, then I get another email alerting me when they change their password, and I’ve seen 8-10 of those so far…

  13. Benoits Girl on March 27th, 2009 1:52 PM

Once you are logged in, in the upper left corner you hit theprofile button…it then opens a page with your name, profile color, etc. on the very bottom you can enter a new password that you want. good luck fellas

  17. michael the hammer on March 28th, 2009 3:53 PM

i like to buy tickets from fighters instead of at the door. is there any fighters with ticks to this show near plymouth?

  18. DiLorenzo on March 29th, 2009 6:53 AM

    Hey Rick,
    Site is coming along great.

For the post above about tickets – South Shore had 3 or 4 guys on the card (Ken Stone, Patty Thompson, Mike Romig and one other who’s name slips my mind right now) but if you can’t catch up with them you can also buy them on the site and list a fighter your supporting.

  19. irish samurai on March 29th, 2009 1:39 PM

who is romig fighting and is he still fighting as an amateur at 185?

  20. DiLorenzo on March 29th, 2009 4:07 PM

Romig is fighting Dimitri Kern – Dimitri knocked out Bill Cardella in the 1st at the last show. This is an amateur fight at 185

  21. irish samurai on March 29th, 2009 5:51 PM

thanks i saw romig fight nichols in january and wondered what happened to both of them, that was a war

  22. DiLorenzo on March 29th, 2009 6:54 PM

Yea that was a war – those two went back and forth for 3 rounds. Great fight for the fans. Mike’s a pretty cool guy, this fight should be just as good. Dimitri is a real strong kid, came from a power liftiing back ground and I know Mike has been working hard adding a ground game. Another fighter I’m really looking forward to that night is Mathew McQueeny vs Eli Hawkins, that fight is 205

  23. irish samurai on March 29th, 2009 7:25 PM

thanks for the info what was that website that had all the pics from afo 2 and 3 on it i lost it when this site changed

Make sure you all support AFO – always a professional well run event.

  31. fightforlife on April 5th, 2009 9:02 PM

This is a full card with some nice match ups, I’m looking forward to it, you giving away any trips like the last time?

  32. Reep on April 6th, 2009 5:13 AM

Which fights are amatuer? Looks like a nice card!

  33. DiLorenzo on April 10th, 2009 7:32 AM

Good Luck tommorow night to all the fighters! As a fan I can’t wait to see some of these match ups- A documentary on “The life of a Fighter” is also being filmed and they had asked to begin filming tomorrow night so if you see cameras make sure you get in front of one. Also I was informed that Dan Lauzon will be cornering one of our fighters (yes I named droped, sorry) as well. Tickets are still on sale through the website, they will be at weigh-ins today from 3-6 as well as the door tomorrow night. If you plan on getting them at the door, come early and save yourself a line.

  34. REV on April 10th, 2009 8:35 AM

  37. barker on April 12th, 2009 9:18 AM

    Some observations from last night:

    Place was rocking.

Stone solidified his position as best 145 in NE. He put on an absolute clinic in winning the AFO title. Watch the video.

Pete runs a great show and most matches were well set up. Only one major mismatch, but I think that was a last minute replacement for Hawkins – kid ended up on a stretcher.

While a lot of the fights were amateur, they were very entertaining and as good as many of the pro fights I have seen.

The SSSF guys are extremely well rounded fighters and as far as I know they went undefeated last night.

While I think it is admirable to support your teammates, every time a Doomsday guy fought, the entire team was in the corner making it difficult to see. Plus, I would think that the fighter might get confused by all the instructions. Still, good to see the support.

Cage fights blow away ring fights.

Good showing by both Marino and O’Connell. Entertaining fights.

One of the SSSF guys knocked out his opponent from the bottom. I have NEVER seen this before.

Can someone explain to me the reasoning behind walking around with your shirt off for 3 hours after your fight? In most cases your face shows that you fought so we already know you were in the ring. Just saying…

    Happy Easter everyone. More later.

  38. Reep on April 12th, 2009 10:48 AM

Sounds like amother successful show for the AFO. Congrats guys!!

Good job to Ken Stone on the title…..who’s next????

  39. Kevin the Ref on April 12th, 2009 11:20 AM

Hey Guys, here’s the results from last night. My apologies to Theo’s opponent because I do not have your name. Great show, great fights. Also, Chris Tracey was conscious and alert as we were taking him out and I hear he’s OK.

This was a great night in Mixed Martial Arts. 15 Fights, many went all 3 rounds and the ones that didn’t ended with great knockouts and subs. We’re very pleased to have Ken as our 1st Champion crowned here in the AFO, Congrats to you!! All the fighters looked great, I real enjoy seeing as a fan alot of these fighters improve after every show. Romig and Kern were 10x better than their last showing, Marion and Patty are always fun to see. Franklin and Tim are two of the best guys I know and to see how excited they were to fight each other was awsome! Our new girl at the table seemed to have many fans last night. I have spoke to Tracey’s camp and he’s ok, nothing broke but has a concussion. I spoke to Eli ringside after the fight and he was very upset, he’s a stand up guy as is the rest of his team. I wanna thank Kavey and his guys – their the ones that got shifted around a bit and they were real cool about it, so I guess were even for making me wait 2 extra hours at weigh ins, HA!!

Our next show is June 5th at the Sheraton Braintree Hotel!! Tickets are on sale now so if you want the $30′s buy them now, as there the 1st to sell out (www.afomma.com). Also type in dilo in the bottom box and all orders for the next 7 days (till next Sunday) will recieve an AFO hat!! Yes thats right, a Hat! I know, you can’t believe it but it’s true!! LOL

Fun show,It’s great that the bar is in view of the action.Lots of female mma fans at the show, which is awesome! I must say, lots of women, booze and great fights. Great time watching AFO shows.

  43. DiLorenzo on April 12th, 2009 7:42 PM

Nic looked real good, he loves his jits and tried through out the fight for different subs. I thought he was doing real well on his feet esp with his kicks and thought if he stayed there a bit longer it would have helped but what do I know. It was a tough fight, I like Nic he’s a real tough kid, he took some real heavy shots and kept coming

  44. D.Pasquarelli on April 12th, 2009 9:40 PM

I just e-mailed Rick the review and it is long but hopefully it will be up soon. COngratulations to all the fighters. I hope I did you all justice with the review.
