Combat Zone 17: Take Control

150 lbs: Jonathan Lave (Submission Arsenal) vs. DanBonnell (Dragon Warrior)

Round 1: The twotouch gloves. Bonnell hits two leg kicks but misses a left hook. Lave shoots,Bonnell defends, and they end up in a clinch with Bonnell against the cage.Both land some knees until Bonnell gets a big slam to side mount. Lave triesfor a triangle and gets to his open guard. Lave stands and Bonnell kicks him inthe face, following up with a jab. Lave fires a kick which is caught as Bonnellgets a takedown to the top of guard. Lave works for a heel hook, but Bonnelldefends with strikes. Lave abandons this strategy and comes to his knees, onlyto have Bonnell counter and lay in more strikes. From the top of the turtleposition, Bonnell takes Lave down to scarf hold. Lave gets out the back doorand into a standing clinch. Bonnell gets Lave down to half guard. Lave reversesto side mount, landing some knees before going to full mount. Bonnell punchesupwards from the bottom until the round ends.

Round 2: Bonnellthrows a middle kick and a jab. Lave misses a front kick. Bonnell throws twojabs and hits right uppercut. Lave responds with a front kick. Bonnell throwstwo middle kicks and lands a jab as Lave tries another front kick. Bonnell hitsa leg kick and Lave responds with a middle kick. Lave shoots and Bonnelldefends. Lave’s kick is caught by Bonnell, who gets a takedown to guard. Lavegoes for a leg lock before establishing half guard and then open guard. Bonnellpounds and passes to side mount, but Lave gets to his feet in a clinch. Bonnellgets a takedown to side mount, but Lave again gets to his feet. Lave shoots andpulls guard. Bonnell lands some heavy strikes, forcing the referee to end thefight.

155 lbs: Ben Manseau (Team Woo) vs. Mark Matheson (DragonWarrior)

Round 1: Thefighters touch gloves. Manseau misses a head kick, throws a 1-2 combination andmisses another head kick. Both throw leg kicks. Manseau hits another leg kickand Matheson hits a middle kick. Both circle. Matheson lands a head kick.Manseau nails a straight right, but Matheson responds with a right hook,knocking Manseau down to his guard. Matheson presses Manseau to the fence andboth are tight in the guard. Manseau misses an arm bar. Matheson passes to halfguard. Manseau shrimps back to full guard. Matheson opens up and lands a punchbefore the ref standing them for inactivity. Manseau throws a 1-2. Manseau thenmisses another right hand. The round ends.

Round 2: Theytouch gloves and begin to circle. Manseau misses a leg kick and a 1-2combination. Both kick and then circle. Matheson hits a leg kick. Both circleand paw at each other, looking for their shot. Manseau misses a head kick and a1-2 combination. Matheson lands a right hook, forcing Manseau to drop for atakedown, which gets Matheson down to the bottom of mount. Matheson caught aguillotine, but Manseau escaped. Matheson turns his back and Manseau gets hishooks before sinking in a rear naked choke for the tap.

180 lbs: Tom Moreau (Team NEMA) vs. Eric Henry (Bomb Squad)

Round 1: Theytouch gloves. Henry hits two leg kicks, goes for a takedown and misses. Moreauclinches Henry to the fence before breaking. Henry throws a leg kick. Moreaucharges to a clinch and gets a lateral drop to side mount before going tomount. Henry holds tightly and rolls out to the top of guard. Moreau holdsHenry’s arms tightly, but Henry gets to open guard where he delivers leg kicks.Moreau gets to his feet, where Henry hits a side kick. Moreau charges with aflurry into a clinch and knees before breaking. Henry hits two leg kicks andMoreau responds in kind. Moreau forces a clinch and gets a throw to mount.Moreau lands some shots before the round ends.

Round 2: Henryhits a leg kick. Henry clinches and goes behind Moreau while standing, takinghim down. Moreau gets out to his feet. Henry hits three leg kicks. Moreauresponds with a front kick and jab. Moreau catches a kick, but they break.Henry hits another leg kick. Moreau shoots, but Henry sprawls. As Moreau triesto peak out, Henry goes to his back. Moreau stands and hits a throw to sidemount. Henry gets his guard but Moreau pounds down and goes for a heel hook.Henry stands out of it and punches as the fighters get in a clinch against thefence. Moreau has Henry in a standing front headlock. Moreau sprawls down onhim and spins around, taking Henry’s back with the hooks in. Moreau locks inthe rear naked choke for the submission.

175 lbs.: Woody Weatherby (Team Woo) vs. Vincent Silvestre (Boston BTT)

Round 1:Weatherby misses a jab. Silvestre shoots, Weatherby defends, and Silvestrepulls half guard. Silvestre gets to his feet and gets a takedown to guard,where he lands some short punches. Silvestre tries to pass and pushes Weatherbyto the cage. Silvestre stand, but Weatherby kicks him away and gets to hisfeet. Weatherby hits an uppercut for a knockdown but Silvestre gets up quicklyinto a clinch. Silvestre pulls guard. Weatherby stands and starts landing shotsthat look harder as he goes. Silvestre taps.

185 lbs: Brendan Hoxie (Shikaku-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu) vs. Tamden“The Barn Cat” McCrory (Bomb Squad)

Round 1: Hoxiethrows two kicks before McCrory works to a clinch. McCrory slams Hoxie down toside mount and starts working for a keylock. Hoxie punches and knees from thebottom. McCrory transitions to mount. Hoxie escapes to guard. McCrory landssome shots and presses Hoxie to the fence. McCrory passes to side mount andworks another keylock. Hoxie rolls out to guard. McCrory knees before going tofull mount and pounding. Hoxie gets out through the backdoor, but McCrory goesto side mount. McCrory tries for an arm bar, but Hoxie rolls out. McCrory locksin a triangle choke, but again Hoxie escapes. McCrory gets to side mount beforegoing back to mount. Hoxie holds his wrists to defend strikes. McCrory spinsfor an arm bar, but again Hoxie escapes. McCrory lands in the top of side mountand pounds as the round ends.

Round 2: McCrorylands a flurry into a clinch. From there he hits knees and gets a takedown tothe top of the turtled position. McCrory gets on top in side mount before goingto full mount. McCrory lands some heavy strikes. After about a minute, thereferee steps in to end the fight.

190 lbs: Josh Cerracino (Dog Pound) vs. Bellaton Frederic (South ShoreSportfighting)

Round 1: Bothcircle. Cerracino throws a front kick. Frederic lands a leg kick, catchesCerracino’s responding kick, and works to a clinch before breaking. Cerracinomisses a front kick. Frederic lands another leg kick. Cerracino misses acombination and Frederic responds with a leg kick. Cerracino misses a frontkick, but goes to a clinch where he knees. They break and Frederic lands a headkick. Cerracino throws a front kick, which Frederic catches and lets go. Theyclinch; Frederic catches a knee and gets a takedown to half guard. Cerracinogets full guard. Frederic stands. As Cerracino stands, Frederic lands a kick tothe head. However, since Cerracino wasn’t fully to his feet, the kick wasillegal and Frederic was warned by the referee. They restart and Frederic hitstwo leg kicks. Cerracino responds with a leg kick, but Frederic catches it andthrows him down. Cerracino gets back to his feet. Frederic hits two more legkicks. Cerracino misses a few punches and again Frederic kicks his leg.Cerracino lands two straight right hands and goes to a clinch. They break andcircle. Frederic throws a 1-2 combination and a middle kick before the roundends.

Round 2:Cerracino comes out and throws a kick, which is caught by Frederic. Cerracinobreaks free and knees. Frederic throws a leg kick that misses the mark and hitsCerracino in the groin. He is given time to recover. After Cerracino feels fitto continue, they circle. Frederic hits two Superman punches. They clinch andbreak. Fred hits a head kick, a front kick, and a few shots while Cerracino isagainst the cage. Cerracino pulls half guard and gets full guard. Both worksmall shots in the guard. Frederic gets to his feet and lets Cerracino stand.Frederic lands another head kick and stalks Cerracino around the cage. Seeingthat Cerracino is out on his feet, the referee steps in to stop the fight.

150 lbs: Matt Keating (Team Unleashed) vs. Matt Smith(Dragon Warrior)

Round 1: Theytouch gloves. Smith jabs and gets a double legs takedown to guard. Keatingrolls out, but gets rolled right back and Smith lands on top in half guard.Smith attempts a guillotine, but Keating pops his head out. Smith gets on topin guard and moves back to Keating’s open guard where he lands some kicks.Keating gets back to his feet. Smith lands leg kicks and a takedown to guard.Keating sweeps to the top of mount. Smith gets out to his knees with Keatingsprawled on top of him. Smith rolls Keating out and lands on top in side mount.Keating transitions to half guard and then to full guard. Smith lands sometight shots, some hitting the back of Keating’s head. Smith pushes Keating tothe cage and stands as the round ends.

Round 2: Theytouch gloves. Keating throws a middle kick. Smith shoots, Keating sprawls andtries for a reverse triangle. Keating works a kimura, but Smith gets out to thetop of side mount. Keating gets up to his knees, but Smith locks in aguillotine. Smith pulls guard and Keating taps out.

185 lbs: Les Richardson (Dog Pound) vs. Alexandre Moreno(Kimura BJJ)

Round 1: Theytouch gloves. Both land some punches. Morenohits a double leg takedown to side mount. Richardsongets half guard. Moreno pushes Richardson to the cage before transitioningto side mount, then to mount. Moreno locks in anarm-triangle choke and forces Richardsonto tap out.

Round 1: Theytouch gloves. Hoxie shoots into a clinch and tries for a knee. Laliberty landsa takedown to guard. Laliberty punches to the body and works for a can openerbefore passing to side mount. Laliberty gets a keylock and Hoxie taps out.

135 lbs: Nick Zimmerman (Team Immortal) vs. Josh Spearman(Dragon Warrior)

Round 1: Theytouch gloves. Zimmerman throws a kick. Spearman responds in kind and takesZimmerman’s back as he slips. Spearman goes for the choke before transitioningto an arm bar attempt. Zimmerman escapes to his knees and locks in aguillotine. Spearman eventually pops his head out and gets to the top of guard.Both land shots. Spearman stands and lands some more strikes. Zimmerman triesto stand, but gives his back. Spearman sets his hooks and locks in the rearnaked choke for the submission.

165 lbs: Bob Pupa (Dragon Warrior) vs. Greg Mucci (DogPound)

Round 1: Thefighters touch gloves. Pupa throws a jab, Mucci responds with a combination,and both trade punches before going to a clinch. Pupa gets a takedown, butMucci gets to his feet and presses Pupa to the cage. Pupa reverses and knees.Mucci reverses and punches. Pupa knees and Mucci gets a takedown to half guard.Pupa gets full guard. Mucci presses Pupa to the fence and punches to the body,working tightly in the guard. After a bit of inactivity, the ref stands themup. Pupa throws a combination and a knee, but Mucci clinches him to the cage.Mucci lands shots to the body. They break and end up clinching again before theend of the round

Round 2: Pupamisses a right, but lands a 1-2. Mucci clinches and gets a takedown to guard,where he punches to the body and slams before eventually getting stood by thereferee. Mucci hits a middle kick and Pupa lands a right hook, knocking Muccidown to open guard. Mucci gets to his feet. Pupa shoots, but Mucci defends andputs Pupa on his back in half guard. Pupa gets full guard, but Mucci gets insome shots to the body before time expires.

170 lbs: Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon (Team Aggression/Team Intensity)vs. Dyrell Walker (K-9)

Round 1: Theycircle. Lauzon shoots into a clinch, chasing Walker across the cage. After going behindand hitting a right, Lauzon slams Walkerto side mount and presses him to the fence. Walker gets half guard and back to his feet.Lauzon catches Walkerin a guillotine and pulls guard. Walkerdefends and pops his head out. Walkerhits a few punches in guard, but Lauzon locks in a triangle. Walker defends for a while, but eventually isforced to tap out.

185 lbs: Jason Hathaway (US Army) vs. Andrew Calandrelli(Bomb Squad)

Round 1: Theytouch gloves and circle. Hathaway flurries, but Calandrelli gets a takedown.Hathaway gets to his feet in a clinch. Calandrelli presses him to the cage andknees before getting a takedown to half guard. Calandrelli punches to the bodyand passes to the back. Calandrelli works the choke, but Hathaway gets out tothe top of guard and presses Calandrelli to the cage. Hathaway lands someshots, but Calandrelli transitions to a toe hold. Hathaway defends, lookinglike he’s ready to tap. After a while of working the toe hold, Calandrelli getsout to the top of the turtled position. Calandrelli sets his hooks and locks inthe rear naked choke for the win.
