Untamed 5-The Review

bycolinv ~ June 17th, 2006

To start, this is some what of a bargain basement review and won’t have any play by play. Something is coming soon with that. This is basically what will be left out of the play by play. I didn’t write anything down, and I did that on purpose. This is what truly left an impression on me from the fights last night.

Kenny Lovetere (Aggression) vs. Wayne Beveridge (Assassins)

Amazing small guy BJJ from Lovetere for him the submission win. He was transitioning from one submission to another, and was looking to finish every second they were on the mat. I can’t wait to see him in with another BJJ guy. I’m also very glad to see Wayne show up, along with Mark Caseau. Maybe they truly are turning over a new leaf this year.

Danny Sheehan vs. Sean Salmon (Buckeye)

No surprise here. The 4-0 college wrestling star took him down and used his positioning to get a ground and pound win. I think the stoppage may have been a little premature, but it wasn’t going to get any better for Sheehan. I hope to see Sheehan in with a guy who’ll strike with him, and I want to see more of Salmon against anyone.

Matt Perry (Aggresssion) vs. Doug Brown (Team True)

Perry looked mad as hell for some reason, and didn’t have his normal calm demeanor. He shot in, pulled guard, and secured a triangle. I think we all knew if Brown ended up in his guard that a triangle was coming, and damn near impossible to defend. Again, I like both guys, and Perry would be fun to watch against another BJJ guy, and Doug is one of my favorites to watch against a guy who’ll strike with him a little.

Matt Martin (Dragon Lair) vs. Josh Spearman (Dragon Warrior)

Spearman landed the best punch of his career, and nearly KO’d Martin, and I think Matt was still hurt, and went for the heel hook to get out of this one with a quick submission win. Josh is improving every fight, and Matt Looked great recovering from the punch, and going right back into his game.

Erik “Chain Saw” Charles (Bomb Squad) vs. Mark Raposo (Boneyard)

Erik Charles and Erik Russel are the same person, and I have no idea why he keeps changing his name. This was one of those surprises I talked about. Erik dominated that stand up with viscious body kicks, fast hands and crisp combinations. The most impressive thing that I saw was his hooks to the body. Way too many guys head hunt, and leave the body alone. The body shots are what won this fight for Charles. He knew if Raposo got him to the ground that he may submit him, and he stuck to the gameplan and got the win. Great Job by Raposo also. He took a beating to the body and never stopped fighting. Had the fight been 5 seconds longer he would have won. He went for a heel hook with less than ten seconds left and Erik tapped a couple seconds after the bell.

Craig Gunder (Section 8) vs. Brad Healy (Gillete)

Craig landed some decent punches to open the fight and got superior position on the ground. He landed some solid punches, and took his back, He needs to work on his positioning, as he looked to lose the back a couple times, but still got the RNC win. He’s another guy I like seeing. He always shows up ready to go, and is fun to watch.

Tamdan McCory (Bomb Squad) vs. Bobby Dias (Boneyard)

Bobby’s guy pulled out because he thought he was fighing on the July show, and Jack Welby ended up in the hospital after an unfortunate accident that occured when he wasn’t careful enough when dealing with his meat (Please don’t ask). So the 19 year old kis was thrown to Bobby Dias in only his second fight. This was surprise #2. Tamdan got a couple takedowns, and after Bobby nearly finished him with a guillotine, Tamdan ended up on top. He worked his position, and got the mount. A bunch of punches and a referee stoppage later and the 19 year old Tamdan McCory has put himself on the map at 175.

We at MassMMA want to wish Welby a speedy recovery, and hope that a lesson was learned by all. Leave the meat alone on fight day!

Eddie Felix (Dragon Warrior) vs. Greg Pomfred (Aggression)

Amazing performance by Greg Pomfred. If you were in the back, it may have looked like he was taking shots, but I don’t think a single punch landed from the top by Eddie Felix. Greg was working for the sub the whole time that Eddie was raining down shots, and like I said, Greg did a great job avoiding punches while getting the submission win.

Tatu Escobar (Best Way/BTT) vs. Joe Cushman (Aggression)

This was surprise #3. Tatu is a blackbelt, but looked less than impressive in a win over Andrew Montanez. Cushman has a bunch of wins, no losses and always looks good. This was supposed to be a bjj guy vs. a true mma guy. Tatu dominated the first round. He got the mount, and was throwing bombs. I never expected him to have hands like that from the top. Cushman gave up the back and Tatu worked, but couldn’t finish it. Round two was closer, but in the end, Tatu got the back again. No real damage was done by either guy, but Tatu got the well earned decision win. I’m not sure that Tatu would have ever finished Joe, no matter the time limit, but on this day he took Cushman out of his game enough for the win. Now who gets Tatu next? Greg Pomfred or Matt Perry are my early choices. Hopefully Full Force Productions agrees with me, and sets up a title fight in the near future.

Pat Schultz (SitYodTong) vs. Eric Brown (Team True)

I mentioned something as this fight started. pat is one of the few local fighters that brings a certain type of energy with him to the ring. Maybe it’s his confidence. Maybe it’s his billion fans screaming his name. Maybe it’s his pimp fight shorts with his name and white tassels. I honestly don’t know, but every time he gets into the ring, if I had any doubt he was going to win, it’s gone by the time the bell rings. It’s tough to describe if you didn’t see the fight. Both guys traded a bit, and the leg kicks won the early part of the fight for Pat. In the second round he started t land with the punches, and more lkicks. By round three he looked fresh, and Eric looked bloody. There were a few times that the fight looked close to being stoped but Pat never really changed his pace and tried to finish. Maybe he was playing it safe, I don’t know, but it was a VERY entertaining main event, and both guys deserve a ton of respect after that one.

After the fight Tim Salmon got on the mic and called out Pat. I doubt this fight will ever happen, but it was still entertaining. I can’t wait for the Full Force Productions show, as I hear that both of the brains behind NAGA (well…the two brains other than Mary) Kipp Kollar and Joe Cuff will be fighting grudge matches against guys who they’ve been talking back and forth with on the internet. A whole lot more is in store from these guys, and I can’t wait!
