AFO Summer Brawl

June 25 Mansfield Holiday Inn

AFO will again explore new territory staging its next show at the beautiful Mansfield Holiday Inn Grand Ball Room on Friday, June 25 for it’s first pro-am show since the State Athletic Commission has approved amateurs in the state. KICK, the Missouri-based organization is the only amateur organization currently approved by the State Athletic Commission, although others are currently under consideration. After initially not approving amateur MMA in Mass, the Commission realized the importance of continuing an amateur program, not only for the fighter’s development but to round out shows as the pro fighter pool grows more shallow.

Topping the pro side of the show will be the AFO 155-pound title pitting Joey Proctor, 4-0, representing Team Aggression against Nelson Gaipo, 5-2 of Dragon Lair. Both fighters have appeared on AFO shows prior, and are determined to bring home the belt. Both fighters have been on a tear of late inside the cage and have both trained very hard for this upcoming contest.

The co-feature pro bout will pit Brian Marino, 2-1 as a pro and 4-0 as an amateur, now fighting out of Allaire MMA against Jarrod Johnson, 4-2 of Dragon Lair. Johnson, coming off a first-round win two weeks ago is in great shape and ready to leave Marino in the losing column and continue on his path to a title fight. Marino, who lost a decision to Jeff Moore in February hopes that the rest and change of scenery in gyms will improve his game.

There are many outstanding matchups, one of the more interesting fight on the show has to be the matchup of two undefeated 135-pounders. Kin “Kong” Moy of Redline pits his 3-0 record against Sityodtong’s 4-0 Dat Than. Moy, who’s AFO performances have been nothing less than thrilling will be tested against the highly-regarded Than, one of the most talented prospects out of one of the area’s top schools. Both fighters jumped at the chance to face off against each other.

Another matchup of undefeated’s will see Team Pradal-Serey’s Ricardo Georges facing Tyson Chartier of Sityodtong. Both fighters appeared on AFO’s February show, with Chartier winning his bout by RNC-2, while Georges scored the most vicious knockout of the night, a first round overhand right that left the crowd silent.

Undefeated Ali Corbett of Waikru will face upset-minded Jeff Lyons of Team Dexter. The more experienced Lyons moves up to 155 to attempt to de-rail the rising star of Corbett.

Jeremiah Diruzzo, 2-0, of Redline will face 1-0 Joe Powers of Team Dexter. Powers last bout was a knockout win over Diruzzo’s teammate, and Diruzzo, a chiropractor by day, looks to avenge his team’s loss.

South Shore Sportfighting will, as always, be a strong presence on Friday. “Sloppy” Joe Lamoreaux will make his third AFO appearance, facing Joe Cloutier of Doomsday MMA in a fight that has twice been postponed. Promising prospect Frank Sforza will make his MMA debut against the determined Curtis Moore, also entering the cage for the first time. Crowd favorite John Campbell will fact Team Rockstar’s Joey Palmer at 135 pounds.

Speaking of Rockstar, the powerhouse school, based in Rhode Island, will also feature Dan Cormier at 130 facing Dexter’s Mike De Los Reyes, Nate Andrews against Jay Reinhold, Estaban Robles looking for his first win against Redline’s Danny Alexis. 205 pounder Tunde Odumusu will face Waikru’s Patrick Walsh in the first MMA fight for both men.

Redline will also be represented by Leo Ikiki, another very popular fighter, facing Team Dexter’s Jake Johnson. Dexter’s MMA of Connecticut, headed by the highly competent and personable Mike Dexter will bring 4 fighters to the show.

Many other local schools will be represented including Allair, Steve Casali, Luke Raphael, Cape Cod MMA, Rhode Island Combat, Bestway Jiu Jitsu, and Connor’s MMA.

This event is being sponsored by Performance Nutrition, Warhawk Fight Gear, Piccadilly Pub, Prime Athletes and Violence Inc. There are over 20 set fights for this great evening of MMA. Doors open at 6 00 and the 1st fight will be 730. Tickets will be on sale the night of the show and currently online at www.afomma.com

Hey thanks for posting the correction, but mma.tv I guess is wrong too cause it says 2-0 and 0-1 as an ammy. We were told what we posted from his camp.

  3. Timothy OConnor on June 24th, 2010 8:55 AM

Good morning, we have two corrections to make as well. “Dat Than” is actually Sityodtong-Boston fighter Dat Tran, and Dat’s Amateur MMA record is (1-0). We’re very much looking forward to this event as fighters from both Sityodtong-Boston and Sityodtong-North Shore will be showcasing their talents against some very good competition. For those who are unfamiliar please check out http://www.SITYODTONGNORTHSHORE.com; the school is Owned & Operated by Kru Neil LaGallo and is a great place to learn under some of the best instructors in the world, Kru LaGallo & Kru Dellagrotte. Thanks go to the AFO for the opportunity and to all of our opponents for the challenge. We hope everyone represents they and their schools well and remain as healthy coming out of the competition as when they went it. Good luck to all!

  6. Timothy OConnor on June 24th, 2010 5:55 PM

Greshy Gresh! Sadly, my man, I have to work this weekend in NYC so I won’t be able to enjoy the AFO Event. I know it’s going to be a spectacular show so I’m truly upset that I won’t be there. Represent the Sityodtong Family, Lobo, and look out for “The Grand Wizard’s” appearance!!!

  7. Scott Thorson on June 24th, 2010 6:02 PM

    Tim’s in the Klan?????

  8. Timothy OConnor on June 24th, 2010 6:23 PM

I am from the southern states, but no, no klansmen here. Gresh people don’t remember WWF Hall-of-Famer “The Grand Wizard”!!!

  9. DiLorenzo on June 24th, 2010 10:11 PM

Weigh Ins are done and ALL fighters (all 48 of them) made weight and got their stuff done. It was a little crazy starting, the state doctor got stuck in traffic but luckily good friend of the AFO Dr Bellinis (hack the name, sorry) stopped by to say hello and jumped right in and helped till the other showed then stayed and finished to make it quicker – we had two scales going and all is done. THANK YOU DOC! We’d still be their! The fights will be starting early than the normal 8. The 1st fight will get off at 7 15!! Doors open at 6 and fighters as a reminder please be their by 5! I wish everyone luck tomorrow night, there are some G R E A T match ups (Think of Tony the Tiger when reading great)

Holy Shit Guys! To everyone that came out thank you so very much – It was a LONG ASS NIGHT and I never thought 17 out of 24 fights would go 3 rounds!! To the fighters and teams thank u! who ever took the water out of the 3rd locker room, not cool!! And Kin Moy I’m so happy bud u have had all your fights with us! Over the 2 years I got to watch u turn into what I think is one of the best pound for pound fighters in New England! You have great things coming your way and I couldn’t be happier to have been a part of it – Everyone left talking about u!

  13. Jason Franklin on June 26th, 2010 9:09 AM

Congrats on the show. Sounds like some good match making if 17 out of 24 went to the 3rd round. Sorry I missed this one.

Any results on some of the bigger name match ups?

  14. Loco Lobo on June 26th, 2010 9:15 AM

Props to JOE Lumba, that 1st round was a barn burner. MOST important you made a committment and you followed through, very proud of you Joe. Congrats to Bill Nickerson , and to Joe Proctor this kid is good. Dilorenzo that was cool show lots of energy, looking forward to the next one.

  15. Rainman on June 26th, 2010 9:19 AM

Why is it that AFO never posts their fight card on this site? 24 fights and only about 5 are mentioned in the preview but not even about both fighters in a few of them…….

  16. Reep on June 26th, 2010 9:30 AM

full results please!!! 24 fights…holy shit!!! How long was the show?? Must have went till 1:00amish?? that’s a long ass night to not have a hotel room to go back to…
Rainman, I’m with you, rarely do we see a full card posted??
I agree with Jason Franklin, must have been some really great match-making for that many decisions!!! Congats to the AFO, all teams and fighters involved!!!
oh….I imagine the ammys went well with KICK…any complaints this time?

  17. Andre 3000 on June 26th, 2010 1:07 PM

  18. scott r on June 26th, 2010 2:27 PM

AK nice job, you worked hard! happy for you!

  19. DiLorenzo on June 26th, 2010 4:53 PM

Sorry I have not issued a full review yet. I left for New Jersey early this morning. Mark is emailing Rick a full review. The reason why we do not put a full fight card going into a show is because of the constant changes in the sports – (medical paperwork, injuries, etc). We rather under promise and over-deliver.

Last night was amazing, the energy was insane.

  20. Lits Penis on June 26th, 2010 5:19 PM

We rather under promise and over-deliver.

It was a great show(ok i always say that when we win) but I always liked that venue, it was well attended and everyone seemed to have fun.
The thing that badly hurt the show was KICK…and I don’t mean Louis, he was fine-seemed on the ball.
It was the guy from KICK who ran our locker room, tall mediteranean looking 20 something.
First off a couple fights before my guy Frank fights in his debut the guy comes in with Louis who takes us outside and lets us know he can cancel all our fights…so we must listen..he tells us how the guy told him Frank was causing trouble with his and giving him a hard time, and Frank is told he can say nothing.
Louis then(doing his job, i understand) gives Frank a 5 minute dressing down about respect…then concede it was only PROBABLY Frank who had hassled the kid.
Normally I’d prolly explode, but Frank is about to fight, so I just apologize(so does Frank) and we try and get his mind off it.
Right before the fight Louis apologizes saying they now know it wasn’t Frank…again, he was humiliated and forced to be berated for at least 5 minutes right on fight night. Those of u who have fought will understand that this kinda thing can really ruin your focus and cause u to lose.
I could less this slide…but then Im watching the same tall guy from KICK who was complaining, and as the night goes on he starts acting like hes on some strong hallucinagenics, and some sort of upper…at the very least cocaine.Early he was quet and shy, now he’s running around screaming and acting incoherent, making a huge scene…this is the guy taking my fighters to the hallway to await their fight and he’s talking nonsense, screaming how he wants to fight…his pupils are massive, then he kinda seems to drift off almost unconscious while standing there, his head falls to one side and he’s muttering as if asleep. Then he awakes screaming again.
My fighters are all annoyedt and rather than getting then ready I’m just trying to make them not think about him.
Now I wanna make clear this isn’t the AFO’s fault at all, nor is it the mass commission or even Louis…but people had to notice he was all messed up.And it is others fault if he’s put in a position of authority again.

There were a couple of other issues, like at the rules meeting where KICK couldn’t explain what leglocks were disallowed. The older gentleman said they allow “same submissions as in high school and college”.
But that’s nothing new. This one guy being like he was while making it clear that he was in charge was like nothing I’ve seen in 1000 fights in a dozen states over a decade.
Two other coaches mentioned to me that it would be great if I mentioned it here.So I did.

  22. Bill Mahoney on June 26th, 2010 7:48 PM

Sorry about the million typos, its just i type like i talk…rambling fast as i can.And If i proof read what I typed id be on the net all day.

  23. Niccolai on June 26th, 2010 8:05 PM

Bills on the ball about that dude being on something.

He walks by me in the hall way talking to himself, I think he’s directing it at me, and i asked him what he said.. at which point he went on to tell me “I have issues… like for real, and i talk to myself because I’m crazy” (his words not mine). This wasn’t in cutesy words with a joking smile, this guy seriously went Robert Downey Junior on the medicine cabinet before the fight.

This is the same guy that told me I had to leave the venue for explaining to him the difference between 4 oz and 7 oz gloves. This occurred as I was walking into the dressing room to give my guys a case of water, since there wasn’t any in their room.

I left the room without saying anything back to him, at which point he decided to follow me to flex his nuts more and tell me i wasn’t welcome at the event. I have alot of respect for the AFO, my team, and the rest of the fighters on the card, so I wasn’t going to start a problem with the guy, but there’s absolutely no reason this guy is in charge of peoples safety.

Maybe he’s a nice guy, and he’s got some great stories about his undefeated record against over 100 different opponents (all of which no one seems to have heard of) but does he belong governing amateur fights? Probably not.

  24. Bill Mahoney on June 26th, 2010 9:16 PM

I brought up the crazy KICK guy to 4 people. All of whom knew who I meant right away and had equally bizarre stories involving women in the crowd and even children.

  25. NA01845 on June 27th, 2010 12:13 AM

You mean strip club industry insiders are on drugs?! I never thought I’d hear such things. Can we PLEASE just get CRANE in there. Kevin and the others involved in that org have an actual desire to better the sport without 1) lining their pockets 2) glorifying themselves and stoking their egos 3) acting in any fashion that would interfere with a fighter’s mental status 4) denigrating the martial arts spirit.

But yeah, at least the KICK ridiculousness gives us good internet fodder.

  26. Rick on June 27th, 2010 8:56 AM

This stuff needs to be brought up at a commission meeting. I wasn’t there, so I can’t comment on what happened, but it would be great if someone like Pete talked to the coaches and fighters from his event and compiled a list of issues that occurred. This needs to be brought to the attention of the MSAC, because there is no reason for people to threaten to cancel fights because of a perceived lack of respect from a guy ready to get in the cage.

  27. DiLorenzo on June 27th, 2010 9:23 AM

We have been getting feedback from teams and fighters. I as well have my own list of things to address. Some of these things I have already started to inform the commission about. Tonight when I get back home, I will t get up all results.

  28. Andre 3000 on June 27th, 2010 10:32 AM

scott rehm, thanks man! if AK is geared towards me….but on the other hand, great fight last week maan!

  29. RICombatClub on June 27th, 2010 11:20 AM

A great night of fights and a very professionally run event, with the exception of the person already mentioned above. I assume we are speaking of the same person, running from locker room to locker room talking about the fighters, and generally sticking his nose in every camps business, horsing around and play-kickboxing with my 10 year old, shooting in takedown attempts on him, and just generally unprofessional behavior.

But other than that, we had a great time like usual.

  30. NA01845 on June 27th, 2010 9:22 PM

jesus everytime I hear something about this guy it gets worse. I can name half a dozen people off the top of my head who would do a better job than these KICK scrubs. Bring back Bruce Marshall or Ralph Green over this guy.

  31. DiLorenzo on June 27th, 2010 11:37 PM

OK – A Review has been posted on our site http://www.afomma.com as well as our next event. As everyone know we just crowned a new title in the AFO and I’m pleased to say it’s Joey Proctor! to answer a bit more about posting a fight card we do post a full card on our site which is where we want the traffic because thats where you can but tickets…. For some reason the few times we tried posting a full card here we’ve had more fall outs, or like putting faces on our posters then if their not fighting its a waist, But again our site does have a full line up for every show. From my point of view on the state and kick, there are still some things that need to be worked out for the better of the sport and the fighters in general and in the week coming I’ll be in Boston with my review of them.
