WCF 10 Preview

byRick ~ June 9th, 2010

WCF 10 is finally here, and though there have been many changes to the card, it’s still packed with 10 fights, all professional. The event is set for Friday, June 11 from the Shriner’s Auditorium in Wilmington, MA. I can honestly say that I’ve never run into this much difficulty matching a card. I looked at my card two weeks ago, and literally only 4 of the 10 fights are the same as I had them last week, and that’s not even taking into account the fights that changed in the weeks prior to that. It’s amazing. I’ve never had so many injuries, or so many guys have some other random reason to pull out. Either way, I’m glad to have the 20 fighters that we do, and I’m sure these guys will put on a hell of a show for the fans. Before I get to the fights, I want to let the fans know that since the commission approved unified rules, all WCF fights will be under unified rules with 3 rounds, each 5 minutes.

In one of my favorite fights of the night, BJJ Brown Belt Noah Weisman(BJJ Revolution) takes on the always exciting Luis Felix (Team Rockstar). Noah was 2-0 as an amateur before his pro debut with WCF, and went 2-0 as a pro before losing a decision to John Benoit. That was a huge step up in competition for Noah, and he looked good in the loss. Noah has shown some great clinch work, in particular knees to the body. When we spoke, he was excited about having the full unified rules, as knees to the head are one of his favorite techniques. Luis is also more at home fighting with unified rules, and he went to war in one of the best fights I’ve ever seen in his last WCF fight. He and Josh Key must have slammed each other 4 or 5 times each, and both needed a doctor after the fight. Luis will be bigger and stronger than Noah in this one, but Noah should have the better BJJ. Both guys are exciting, and no matter who wins this one, it’s going to be fun to watch.

Dan Bonnell (Renzo Gracie NH) is set to return to WCF when he takes on Christian Rivera (Dragon Warrior). Christian had been on a 3 fight winning streak before losing in a local title fight, and he looks to get back on track against Bonnell. Dan looked great in a quick KO of Cesario de Souza at the last WCF, and he’ll look to dictate the pace in this one. Both guys can punch, and they both really want this win.

Stephen Stengel was originally scheduled to fight Scott Nichols, but that was one of the changes I mentioned earlier. Nichols pulled out yesterday, and we scrambled to find a replacement. We were able to find a fighter that should be just as fun, if not more fun to watch than Nichols in Anthony Kaponis (AFA). Anthony most recently won at CFX in the first round, and also has a KO win over Adam McQuaid. He comes in at 3-0, and that is just what Stengel wanted…a young, up and coming prospect trying to make a name for himself. Stengel has been with WCF since day 1, and he truly feels the WCF ring is his home turf. He looked great in his last WCF fight, a first round win over previously undefeated Mike Zichelle, and he’s planning on adding the exciting brawler, Anthony Kaponis to his list of “previously undefeated” fighters he’s stopped. I can’t wait for this one. Both guys hit hard, and both try to knock people out. This one should be awesome.

In a fight between two exciting little guys, Peter Cole (Bombsquad) and Jeff Silva (Premier Martial Arts) finally meet up. This fight has been talked about numerous times, and I’m excited to have it on WCF 10. Both guys can do it all. They both have hands, both can wrestle and both have submissions. I have no idea how this one is going to break down. They’ll likely both shine in spots and wind up in a close, split decision.

Josh Mellen (Fight Factory) is set to take on Shawn “The Neckbreaker” Baker (MAXX) in what should be a really fun fight to watch. One thing that I like about both guys is that they either go out on their shield, or send you out on yours. I love watching guys like this fight. They throw caution to the wind and try to take their opponent out from beginning to end. I can’t tell you who is going to win, but I’m bettinit ends by stunning knock out.

At the last WCF, RobbyRoberts (Fight Factory) earned a first round submission over Buster Crandall. This time, he’s set to take on Buster’s teammate and friend, Dan Jennings (Bombsquad). Dan comes in as 1-0 as an amateur and is out for revenge. He’s a brawler with heavy hands, and he’s going to take the fight to Roberts. Robby has never been afraid to bang, and I’m sure he’ll meet Dan in the center of the ring in this one.

Buster Crandall (Bombsquad) makes his return to the ring at his more natural weight class, 175 when he takes on first time fighter Chris Madden (Guy Chase). This should be a clash of styles with Buster looking to bang and Chris looking to take the fight to the mat.

Billy Walsh makes his WCF debut against veteran WCF fighter Joel Ly (Guy Chase). Joel is 1-1, and got his first win at the last WCF by first round submission. Billy is an exciting kickboxer who has always taken really tough fights. He’s looking to keep this fight standing and earn his first pro win over the tough and exciting Joel Ly.

In another clash of styles, first time fighters Thomasroy “T-Roy” Gusler takes on tough wrestler Lee Emmitt (Guy Chase). T-Roy has never been afraid to mix it up in sparring sessions with tough and talented kickboxers with much more experience than himself, and he wants to test himself in the WCF ring. Emmitt’s debut has also been a long time coming, and I expect both guys to really lay it on the line.

Steve Beck makes his return to WCF in search of his first pro win and he takes on late minute replacement, Jarryd Johnson (Dragon Lair). Steve has really been working on his boxing and Jarryd will have an advantage on the mat.

I want to thank everyone for their continued support of WCF, and I look forward to seeing you at the event Friday!

Best of luck on the show Joe and Rick. Also, best of luck to all fighters and teams involved. Tough luck on losing all the match-ups Rick, still some decent fights. If the show was on Saturday, I’d be going…. Maybe you guys should do a few amateur fights?? Helps fill a card, and amateurs are often just as fun to watch as “new” pros, or guys with a few fights etc.

Really good fights last night. Big congratulations to Anthony Kaponis (American Fight Team) for a good win against Stephen Stengal. Stengal is an animal, tough and very aggressive. That fight was fun to watch. He and his team were really cool outside the ring too.

I hate to single out any particular fights because there were some really good ones last night but fights of the night had to be ; Joel Ly vs. Billy Walsh and Noah Weisman vs. Luis Felix. All those fighters really went to war in their matches.

Madden vs. Crandall was some of the best 4:31 of fighting I’ve ever seen. It looked like the a scene from Rocky. That fight was unreal. Almost every fight was a back and forth war last night and the feedback we got was great. Thank you to all the fighters involved.

I forgot about the Madden vs. Crandall fight. That was also one of the fights of the nights. It did look like a scene from Rocky. I couldn’t believe the heart on those two fighters. The energy of the crowd during that fight was crazy.

    we got videos?

Crandall vs Madden should open every WCF show. That was awesome.
Thanks to Joe Cav and his staff for having me. Always a pleasure fighting for you guys.

I hope the Commission saw what they’ve done to the ticket sales in this state by the crowd we had last night. They seem to make everything so difficult in my opinion. For instance, i had a deputy follow me to the bathroom to take a shit and change into my shorts…….what is the reasoning behind that? I asked him what he was doing he said it was procedure. Last time i heard that it was from Lit , i was so naive then.
