This will be a title qualifier match between the top two welterweights in New England. The winner will face Shonie Carter on July 31st in Milford New Hampshire. I cannot remember the last time a #1 faced a #2 in New England. I know the heavyweights have done an outstanding job of fighting the best, but the planets must be aligned for this fight. Rick is coming off of a disappointing experience with Shine Fights where he was to face BJJ World Champion Braulio Estima. Rick’s submission defense must be top notch considering the training he went through before Shine was cancelled. Dennis tends to rely on his submissions which may now be nullified. Hawn, as everyone knows, is a Judo Olympian under the legendary Jimmy Pedro. Rick has supplemented his training over the past couple of years at Sityodtong and spent considerable time at AKA in California and ATT in Florida in preparation for his fight with Estima. Olson has remained very active as this will be his fourth fight in 2010. Both guys like to clinch and I am confident in saying that the fans will be treated with a talented ground war. Rick will be looking to throw Olson and ground and pound while Olson will be looking for submissions. Each fighter is undefeated at 170lbs, Hawn (6-0) and Olson (8-0).
165lbs Nuri Shakir (13-17) Team Elite VS Brent Kinberger (5-2) MFS NH
Those who need to know why……know! This fight was cancelled as a result of “real life” issues beyond anyone’s control. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such great fighters from such great camps. This was a great fight for the fans and I am very hopeful that it will be rescheduled soon on another event. Thank you Nuri and Brent for your courtesy, understanding and camaraderie.
155lbs John Ortolani (2-1) Gracie Barra NH VS Aniss Alhajjajy (4-0) Boston BTT
This fight has the best chance of being the most exciting of the night. If you haven’t seen Alhajjajy or Ortolani fight, look up the videos. Both fighters are willing to go airborne and take this fight anywhere. Alhajjajy is a submission specialist with outstanding conditioning and always pushes the pace. Ortolani plays lacrosse for the Boston Blazers and the Boston Cannons. He is the epitome of a professional athlete. Look for both fighters to use their striking to close the distance and impose their game plans. Ortolani’s aggressive wrestling and ground and pound may leave him vulnerable to the slick submissions of Alhajjajy. Do not take your eyes away in this one!
205lbs Jesse McElligot (2-0) Connors MMA VS Randy Rowe (3-6) Lion’s Den CT
This is a very interesting fight. McElligot is 19 years old, 2-0 pro, 2-0 amateur and has finished each of his opponents. He has demonstrated incredible potential and technique for such a young fighter. Rowe needs no introduction. The unknown variable here is Rowe’s activities since his last fight in April 2009. Rowe is either going to demonstrate that he is a force in the 205 division or McElligot will continue his rise.
This is how the rest of the card shapes up
155lbs Aaron Smith (2-0) Seacoast MMA VS Peter Wellman (1-0) Dragon Within
135lbs John Campbell (1-0) SSSF VS Anthony Carmenatti (2-0)
170lbs Chris Perrin (0-0) Gracie Barra NH VS Keegan Hornstra (1-1) Team Mainiac
155lbs Will Chan (1-0) Dragon Warrior VS Nerman Zilic (0-0) Dragon Within
135lbs Jeremy Sarno (1-0) SSSF VS Matt Marshall (0-2) Team Mainiac
125lbs Andrew Reeves (0-0) Gracie Barra NH VS Ermino Magno (0-1) Independent
185lbs Nick Olson (0-0) Gracie Barra NH VS Jeremy Carr (0-1) Team Mainiac

Nice card…some really good matchups!!! Best of luck to all fighters and teams!!!
Great to see a promotion finally bring a fighter in from out of state and do it right. A name like Shonie Carter will sell tickets even if he’s not fighting, but to bring him in to hype a HUGE fight one show and again to fight the winner of that huge fight….brilliant idea.
Triumph Fighter seems to “get it” they are on the right track to becoming a promotion to reckon with.
Great looking card… ballsy move having Dennis fight Rick as a title qualifyer. John could have easily handed Dennis the fight against Shonie but he didn’t. Again my hat is off to Dennis and John, they are a great representation of local mma. That said Rick is a beast and this is going to be a war. Dennis and Rick both tend to be stronger and historically have always out worked thier opponents. Couldn’t think of a better possible matchup.
I”M REALLY AMPED UP FOR THISSS!!!!

Congrats to TRIUMPH for a fantastic night of fights. If you haven’t attended one of these shows, you really need to. The venue has great views from anywhere and the matchmaking in top notch. Every fighter last night brought their A game and put it all on the line for the fans. Looking forward to the August show. Rick Hawn vs. Shonie Carter will be much anticipated!
My 2 cents seems to have turned into a nickels worth of knowledge since I have “come out” and I just want to say thanks to all the guys in the sport who have supported my views and comments. So, without further adeu…The Triumph show last night was fantastic, and anytime you leave an event excited about what you saw, I am to assume that its a good time. The crowd wasnt as big as expected, or as big as last event, but it was a solid crowd with good fighter support. Im not going to get into official particulars, as Jim Lampley would say, as Mark Daniels does a phenominal job at that, and Im sure Rick will back it up with an exceptional synopsis of the evenings events as well.
The fights were good, very evenly matched, and great competition. The amatuers put on a great display of heart, soul, and raw integrity. The pros…well…they are pros. Impressed with John Ortolani, and see him developing into a great fighter, but the hats off obviously goes to Rick Hawn, who not only overpowered Dennis Olsen, but just out and out dismantled him. This was the perfect case scenario of a boy fighting a man. A great athlete fighting a superb olympic athlete. Thus…the result speaks for itself.
Complaints with the show?? In speaking with John Fain, as a promoter he knows there are small flaws that he seems to be working on to improve the show, as a fan, maybe you dont see them, but behind the scenes John obviously knows what he sees as a promoter and is visibly intelligent enough to know how to get a grasp on them, and continue to improve them. I personally would add a bit of flair at this point, after a 2nd succesful show, and get the crowd into it a little bit more. The venue is great, maybe a tad bit too big for a show the stature of Triumph, but as it grows it should work out well. Complexes as that are good if your CFX, and are drawing a few thousand people, as we will see in a few weeks Im sure when they return to Plymouths Jungle Plex. My only real pet peeve of the evening was having Shonie Carter in the ring before the main event. His staring down of Olsen seemed a little out of place, and may be a contributor to Olsens state of mind. It seemed alot of prominent people int he crowd disaproved of this tactic, and voiced their opinions alot. After the fight, yes its obviously a great marketing ploy, but not before the fight…too much can be attributed emotionally or pschologically to a tactic like that in my opinion. Either way, I have a feeling the fight between Carter and Hawn should at the least, be entertaining and physical.
Hats off to John and the Triumph crew for another great show, in what shows to be a promising endeavor of building great MMA in the state of New Hampshire!!
Great fights,
I had a blast helping John Fain and Billy Fuller run Triumphs second show. All the fighters although primarily amateur, they conducted them selves as professionals and were all a pleasure to deal with. I have a close relationship with the Triumph group, as a Matchmaker for GFL we share fighters and co-exist to compliment each other and make NH a great state to fight in. Again, i want to thank all the fighters for their involvement and especially the crew who made it run smoothly! On to GFL July 16th and Triumph July 31st !
