XCFL 3 Review

byRick ~ May 23rd, 2010

XCFL 3 took place May 15, 2010 from the Marlborough Event Center and the event saw a new Welterweight Champion crowned, as well as the debut of Andreus Jeudi.

Before I get into the fights, I want to comment on the production. It was pretty awesome. They had the same double sided screens as before, as well as smoke and lights as guys entered the cage. They also had various highlights playing in between fights, and had some great action from XCFL 2. It was really cool to see the highlights, and it gave us something to watch in between fights…plis is was set to “Symphony of destruction” and that’s pretty cool.

Robby Slade from Lauzon MMA took on Todd Sweeny from Mixed Breed MMA in the nights opening contest, and the fight was back and forth in the first. Both had their moments, but Slade looked to be the more technical. Round two saw Slade use his slick BJJ, locking in a fight ending arm triangle.

Andreus Jeudi, an often talked about Sit Yod Tong fighter made his pro debut against Scott Lynch from Mixed Breed MMA. Andreus jumped on him early, landing a big leg kick and a big cross. Scott kept pushing forward, was looking for a takedown, but ate a brutal knee to the body. The knee dropped him and could have been enough to end the fight, but Andreus jumped in with a few punches that knocked Scott out and ultimately earned the stoppage and the win.

Ruben Rey from team Rockstar fought a very exciting and high paced fight with George Lynch from Connors MMA. There were some big takedowns, reversals and scrambles. Ruben landed a big knee  that dropped Lynch, and Ruben quickly mounted him and rained down punches for the TKO win.

Eric Fama from team Rockstar jumped on Luiz Rodriguez from Sit Yod Tong early, but after a quick takedown from Eric, Luiz locked up a tight arm bar for the win. It was very quick and a huge win for Luiz.

In a fight where both fighters had last minute opponent changes, Nelson Gaipo from Dragon Lair took on Asa Buck from Fight Factory. Like the fights before them, they fought at a wicked pace, and the ending came swiftly. The two locked up in a clinch and it looked like a hockey fight. Nelson landed a few big shots that looked to really rock Buck, and the referee stopped the fight. Personally, I don’t like to see fights stopped with guys never getting dropped, but it did look like Buck was really hurt and the stoppage was justified.

Sit Yod Tong’s Scott Nichols made his return to action against Robby Roberts from Fight Factory, who was coming off a couple wins in a row. Robby was throwing punches in bunches, but Scott was showing some really good head movement. He did his best Roy Jones Jr. impression by sticking his head out and slipping punch after punch. As soon as Robby stuck him with a couple, Scott stopped the “hands down, chin out” technique and basically bullrushed Robby to the mat. He threw a ton of punches and showed a mean streak we haven’t seen from him. Great TKO win for Scott.

The main event fight was flat out awesome. Highly touted Chris Cape from Sit Yod Tong took on James Boran from Dragon Lair. Cape is very talented, but Boran looked mean and nasty, even before the fight started. He walked to the cage to some old school Metallica, with a bandana over his face, and was looking holes through Chris before the fight event started. He was so focused on Cape that while he paced arpund the cage, he ran right into the ring girl who was walking around holding the belt up. I felt bad for her, but it was pretty funny. Boran opened up the fight with a good cross, but Chris quickly took him down to side mount. He mounted, then took the back. Boran reversed him, and Cape went for a kneebaaahh. Boran punched his way out, but Cape was all over him. He took his back again and was working the RNC. As time expired, I thought it was clearly 10-9 Cape, but Boran showed he could avoid Chris’ submissions, and still come back firing punches with the same mean intentions.

Round two opened up with Cape grabbing a single, and Boran landed something like 20 hammer fists as he avoided the takedown. Boran locked in a standing guillotine and squeezed it tight, putting Cape to sleep. HUGE win for Boran, who is the new XCFL Welterweight Champion.

So now that Donny isn’t with the XCFL who is handling things, because he was the only one who would return a phone call.

The production of the show was really good. You could tell they took the time to make sure the fans had a good time.

The last fight of the night Cape vs. Boran was a great fight from both fighters. Both fighters and their camps should be very proud of them. That said, Boran’s intensity is scary.

Two promoters jump on the scene disrupting everything. They end up running their promotion into the ground, upsetting fighters, managers, fans etc. While losing a few hundred thousand dollars along the way………

But two promoters now fighting over who wants to own the promotion that screwed everyone over and call it their own……..Priceless!!! haha
