Amateurs to KICK it up

byRick ~ May 2nd, 2010

Mark Daniels reports on the newly approved amateur MMA.

It took nearly two months, but amateur MMA will again be a part of Massachusetts.

Yesterday, the commission voted in a unanimous favor to approve KICK International as the sanctioning body in the commonwealth. The Missouri-based non-profit organization will oversee and regulate amateur MMA bouts.

“They’re setup in 22 states. It’s the largest organization that was presented to me,” Commissioner Gary Litchfield said during yesterday’s meeting.

Without the separate sanctioning body amateurs weren’t allowed. As an amateur fighter, one doesn’t get paid. Having multiple amateurs on a fight card helps local promoters stay out of the red.

American Fighting Organizaiton President Pete DiLorenzo felt the negative effects of having to use all pro’s, at his show in Plymouth last weekend. Out of the 14 shows the AFO has put on, which regularly feature amateurs, this past was the only were DiLorenzo and company lost money.

    @MMA.TEAM

    The MMA rules start on page 36, when i first read through them I thought the kickboxing rules where the same as the MMA rules.

    Is it true that Moosin is trying to put a worked fight between LB vs Butterbean? I cant believe that Moosin calms it to be the first major show in Massachusetts but they are trying to put on a worked fight. Times like this i am glad we have a Commission to govern promotions like Moosin.

    These tools don’t require blood work or a physical to get licensed by them. Just a check and a brief chat with the doctor that night. Another stellar call by the Mass commish

    Actually Greg, I’ve been called by multiple promoters who are very concerned about the lack of bloodwork or medicals. Not only could they not find it in the packet, but the organization reps supposedly confirmed this. When I read over the regs I did not see anything about bloodwork, pregnancy exams for females, ekg’s, or physicals. One promoter told me that, after inquiring with the organization, all that is required is a 15 question “exam” from the fight doctor. I really hope this isn’t the case.

    Maybe, if this is really as it appears, the community can once again “self-regulate” and get it done on our own.

    Yea I have been getting the same answer about the meds – I do see here its listed but on other forms its not and I personally have spoke with them several times and was told about a 15 questionnaire from the fight doctor and that was it. hopefully in a week things will smooth themselves out with this stuff at the next meeting
