MSAC Help and Assistance?

As everyone knows, the newly formed Massachusetts State Athletic Commission began sanctioning MMA and all other unarmed combative sports on March 1st.  It seems that when someone has a good experience they might tell just one or two people, but when someone has a negative experience, they shout it to 100-200 people. With that being said, if anyone has any positive insight on dealing with the MSAC, please share it. Maybe it is from anyone over 35 who has obtained their license to fight, maybe a good place to get your medicals done, or you could share proactive things witnessed at a meeting.  Also, it has been mentioned before that many of the commissioners do, in fact read this site. If this is the case, maybe some good questions/concerns could be brought up here to help move the ball forward.  Commission meetings are public and recorded so anything that has been covered should be open to discussion, especially if anyone was there and heard it first hand. Some of the folks on this site have been in attendance at the meetings including fighters, promoters, officials, fans, and media. Many have expressed concern over issues of communication. It appears that the only avenues of communication have been through email, phone, and meeting attendance.  Meetings can be difficult to get to due to time and location and it has been stated that there is just one person, Ronnie Drimer, who is tasked with the phone and email responses.  Some who know and have communicated with Ms. Drimer say that, with so many individuals who have a vested interest in what’s happening day to day, the phone lines and emails have been off the charts in volume. This may help explain why there could be delays in responses to questions and/or concerns.  Maybe, if we can open up some discussion here, some questions could be answered from the community right away on the forum.

Rather than everyone calling each other with half truths and “he said/she said” information, why don’t we have an area here on the site where some issues can possibly be cleared up by people with first hand knowledge. I imagine that many questions are similar in nature. Hopefully this could be one way to make our (the MMA community) and their (the MSAC) job a little bit easier.

I just got my matchmaker’s license the other day. It took a couple weeks, but I didn’t have to jump through hoops. I filled out the application, sent it in along with everything they list as requirements and my license came in the other day. My advice would be to make sure you fill everything out correctly, and include all your paperwork. If they say they need a copy of your driver’s license…make sure to include it. If they want your medicals…send them all in the same package.

And be patient…it took a couple weeks, and I doubt it would have been faster if I called and emailed every day. If you know you need a license in a month, send it now. Don’t wait until the last minute.

First rule of MSAC……..don’t talk about MSAC

Seriously though, I thought the double weigh ins were gone, are they not? I for one don’t think that it is too safe to have guys potentially still dehydrating on fight day. Also, why are some of the “big” shows “doubtful”? I would think that heads would roll if, after all that has gone on, the UFC isn’t allowed to come drop a giant check off to Beacon Hill.

Rick, when is the next WCF show??

  4. Kevin the Ref on April 12th, 2010 12:56 AM

I saw on another posting that Dr. Edgar Ballenas has been helping guys out with medicals. He is a doc on the commission and has been very helpful steering fighters in the right direction.

Who has been able to find this holy grail of a $50K bond? I keep hearing from some that ‘we’ve got it, it’s all set” to “oh no, it fell through”. Some promotions have been told “if you do not have the bond IN HAND, don’t bother putting in any paperwork.” But then, when it get’s down to the wire, the commish says “we can work with you, we’ll find a way, don’t worry about it.” Is this bond a real requirement or just a conveiniently enforced stumbling block to stop “some” promotions? and if so, are some getting a little more “consideration” than others? One show has already happened, so this bond must be out there?

  6. om on April 12th, 2010 7:18 AM

rick no matter what you say or do the state will make any easy matter a nightmare have you not realized this in your short life…and sucking up to them will not help…typical quagmire of bs…going to be like the registry of motor vehicals…fu commission

  7. DiLorenzo on April 12th, 2010 9:48 AM

Dr Ballenas is great guy and has been very helpful to fighters. As far as the bond it has been a real pain in the ass from the get go!! We did find a company and got approved pretty quick but then got delayed in getting the paperwork. We finally got a PDF last week and emailed it to the state. 2 weeks ago we did have our paperwork sent back to us as well for it not being complete after we hand delivered it to them. So we hand delivered it again, lol… at their last meeting.

  8. Rick on April 12th, 2010 11:26 AM

How exactly am I sucking up to them? My advice was to fill out the fucking paperwork correctly and send it in early…seems pretty simple, but I’ve talked to several people who were bitching because they wouldn’t approve their license because they didn’t have all their medicals…what the fuck is that about? Of course they’re not going to approve you if you don’t send in all your medicals.

I’m not sucking up at all, just pointing out that people trying to get licensed need to stop acting like idiots and expecting the MSAC to license you when you don’t complete all the requirements. If this was any other job, it’d be the same thing.

When I started my current job, I had to get fingerprinted…and they only do that in my town once a week for 2 hours. I showed up and realized I needed to have a birth certificate to get printed. No birth certificate, no prints…no prints, no job. I went to town hall, filed the right paperwork and got a birth certificate on the spot. I then went back to get printed and got this all done within the 2 hours. It wasn’t that difficult.

I look at this from a different angle because most fighters act like friggin cry babies when asked to get their paperwork. They say they “forget” where they got their medicals done, and that it’s going to be tough for them to get the old test results. Cry me a friggin river…a fighter on a show of mine a year or so ago thought his meds were current and they weren’t, and found out 3 days before the fight. He wanted to fight, so he found a place that did bloodwork on the spot and gave results in 20 minutes…and he called his doctor and begged him to squeeze him in for a physical and did the same at an eye doctor. Guess what…they squeezed him in.

I’ve seen it done many times by guys who actually give a shit…and I’ve seen guys who don’t give a shit say a month isn’t enough time. I’ve had guys not fax me their contract for a month because they ran out of printer ink and don’t have a fax machine. Literally a month. If you call your local Staples, or Kinko’s, you can forward them the email, and they’ll print it for you…then you sign it and fax it from their store. It takes less than an hour and if you can’t work the hour into your busy schedule, you shouldn’t be allowed to fight.

I’m not attached to the MSAC, have been to 1 meeting ever and I don’t give a shit if any of you love or hate them…I’m just sick to death of fighters and managers acting like everything we ask them to do is a huge pain in the ass and unreasonable. They spend more fucking time complaining about the requirements that it’d take them to complete the requirements.

Next WCF is June 12, Reep.

  10. Dominic Kane on April 12th, 2010 1:21 PM

I dont understand why the commission has to be so difficult? why cant they model them selves like NH and just do this the day of weigh-ins? they sure as hell can make sure 40 deputies show up fight night to sit cage side….why cant they show up at weigh-ins to do paperwork? NH accomplishes this with the same 4 guys every time with no budget and a $15 fighter license fee. The commissions efforts to be professional and run a tight ship are backfiring on them. They have a very knowledgeable gentleman (Joe Espisito) on their panel that seems to get pushed out of the loop all the time. Thats a bonehead move in my opinion. He is the only person on that board with any experience in Martial arts.

  11. Reep on April 12th, 2010 7:01 PM

    Thanks Rick!

    Dominic Kane, I agree!!

  12. Strikers Quest on April 12th, 2010 9:31 PM

Strikers Quest is looking for fighters to participate in a K-1 rules event. The event will be in early summer. If you are interested please send your info (weight, height, record, age, accomplishments, titles, style, etc…) to stikersquest@yahoo.com
We are looking for all types of strikers (Muay Thai, American Rules, Shan Shou, International Rules, FC Rules).

    NO MA FIGHTERS LICENSE REQUIRED!!!!

  13. Kevin the Ref on April 13th, 2010 6:31 AM

Just got my license yesterday in the mail. For the record, I used passport photos and everything turned out fine.

  14. DiLorenzo on April 13th, 2010 9:43 AM

In May there will be a discussion about weight cutting and the 2nd weigh in. It looks like their pushing to have it and the waiver in place now will be no longer. Dr Ballenas has asked me to attend because of my experience with wrestling and weight cutting. Any info you might have to support why the 2nd weigh in can be more harmful to fighters please send it along to my email or post it here and I’ll cut and paste it.

  15. Rick on April 13th, 2010 8:38 PM

The 2nd weigh-in won’t allow fighters ample time to rehydrate…lack of hydration will lead to more injuries, and since it’s doctors on the board, I’m hoping they don’t need me to explain why from a medical stand point. One thing they also need to consider is when not properly hydrated, your coordination takes a hit…less coordination, more injuries.

The purpose of the rule, or the hope I should say…was so that guys wouldn’t cut so much weight. However, they will ALWAYS cut just as much weight, and the double weigh-in only makes it harder for them come to the cage properly hydrated.

  16. Bruce Marshall on April 13th, 2010 9:28 PM

I’m looking for the information on that $50 dollar bond thing. If anyone has it, please post. To be honest I’ve never had $50 dollars in the account going into an event, but, I guess that’s not unreasonable. Also, can someone help with the insurance. I’ve never used it but I guess that I need to now that people check.

  17. Nelson on April 14th, 2010 11:55 AM

Does anyone have a phone number for the person in charge of applications? Cant find my birth certificate but want to know what else I can use if anything to get my license.

  18. Rick on April 14th, 2010 1:59 PM

You should be able to get a new one if you call your town hall. I got a new one really easily when I needed mine.

  19. Nelson on April 14th, 2010 6:55 PM

Thanks Rick, I also emailed Ronnie Drimer and got a response almost immediately after!

  20. mark on April 14th, 2010 7:58 PM

Are any other promoters out there being told it is “illegal” to talk or to promote a fight or a fight card before it’s sanctioned by the commission?

    I hope not…

  21. Jim J Bullock on April 14th, 2010 10:33 PM

From what I have seen/heard at meetings that statement could only come from the buffoon that is commissioner Fitz-rhymes with herald. He was the former head of the commish and makes more verbal faux pas’ than Joe Biden drunk in a room full of minorities. I saw him go up and yell/berate/verbally attack Linda Shields at the XCFL AND IT WASN”T EVEN HER EVENT!!! Amazingly, she did not burst out laughing or slap him in the face. He kept talking about how he was going to “embarras her” if she sat people cageside or let them drink.

I heard that he was quitting as commissioner but don’t know if it is true. The scary thing is that one of the judges said that this clown wants to become a MMA judge so he can judge the UFC when it comes to town. Hopefully someone with half a brain realizes that this man in a judge slot would make Cecil Peoples look like Stephen Quadros.

  22. kkline_83 on April 16th, 2010 9:54 AM

    EPIC!!!

    This is only the beginning.

Hey, if anyone has any free time on there hands, could they graph how many fights happened in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 fights? Please mark on the graph where the state took over and started commissioning. That right there should wake up everyone and help them see really how good the commision is for this sport. I think we have had more cancled fights in 4 months than we have had in 4 years!!!!

  23. Bonnell on April 16th, 2010 10:07 AM

If it helps any, GFL is holding shows May 8th, July 17th and Sept 18th all in NH :)

  24. kkline_83 on April 16th, 2010 11:51 AM

Off topic, I thinks its time to set up a residence in NH to avoid all the crap this state has to offer. Let me know when everyone decides to drop there balls and stand up for how it should be

  25. Mark Daniels on April 16th, 2010 12:27 PM

Dalton, I was there…. let me see if I can answer this briefly…

    1. About the shinpads…. it was a dark grainy video, I wouldn’t put much thought into that.

    2. If a fighter is to fight for the first time as a pro in MA, they need to show some type of background to get licensed. People are being licensed as pro athletes here, so I don’t have a problem with that.

    3. Greg Rebello fought Dick before TUF even aired. So obviously there was no way to watch Greg on TV while approving the fight. But yes Anthony Dick was suspended for 6 months for his performance in the cage at XCFL.

    4. Pete from the AFO was quick to point out who SSSF was. It did kind of go down like that. Obviously there were commissioners who knew about SSSF.

    5. For the good… Bellator’s show was approved. It looks like AFO’s show is going on.

Fighters need to get all their paperwork in!!!! And there was some confusion on this, if you are getting licensed in MA for the first time you NEED to fill out a pro debut form. Even if it’s not your pro debut. But the fact that you’re fighting as a pro for the first time in MA, you need to fill out the form.

  26. DiLorenzo on April 16th, 2010 2:36 PM

I’m gonna add to what Mark said but just not as polite. I fought for just about every single fighter getting his license. Because Tom G out of SSSF fought all his fights in MA they did not want to Lic him. At least the guy on the phone and Mrs. Adams. Pedro could not be found online so he too was an issue even though he fought for us as a pro. Mrs Adams said any fights in Mass prior don’t count because the shows weren’t real (not exact) also added that they were like back yard type shows (again not word for word).

  27. DiLorenzo on April 16th, 2010 2:38 PM

Everything in that above post is correct, that stuff did happen and I think it was the same guy about the cups….

  28. Bill Mahoney on April 16th, 2010 2:48 PM

“who was questioning Bill Mahoney?” I can’t tell u how many times I’ve screamed that same thing out in public places for no reason at all.

But on a separate note…are the days of guys who train themselves in their basements over? Will no more karate schools be allowed to field fighters due to not being known to the MMA world? If so, then this is a sad day.

But what I really mean to ask is must every fighter have a known and credible trainer to be allowed to fight? If so, it’ll be hard for new teams to start up.

  29. Bill Mahoney on April 16th, 2010 2:51 PM

I’m not sure, but I think cause Tom Giove’s 1st fight was in boston at the avalon then he did fight under the commission in it’s old incarnation.Cause if I recall correct(and I usually dont) It was right after MMA got banned in Boston that the commission stopped running the show.

  30. Dysqo Dave on April 16th, 2010 3:00 PM

So Giant Lee’s fight doesnt count?!?!?!??!?

  31. DiLorenzo on April 16th, 2010 3:22 PM

Some Deputy, I forgot his name but I heard it was the cup guy so maybe someone else can answer that. When fighting for Mike to get his lic he asked about his trainers and i said where he came from and your two names, He then asked what your backgrounds were and I said that was irrelevant he said no that very relevant. I told him I didnt know but anyone in the MMA community would know who you guys were. I will add that Joe was the 1st to open his mouth to what I thought was a foolish question and defended you and praised your school. But then later in the same meeting he did refer to you as a KILLER!! talking about Dick. I know these public meetings are taped so i suggest you all get it and listen to it!! As a whole It wasn’t all bad and I have problem with a group that might not see things the way I do and are willing to talk about them. My problem is that seems to be a few on this community that really either don’t want to be there or just doesn’t want this sport be , I am openly saying here that they right now are really hurting us and how we do our business. Our next show WILL be in NH and I will stay there till this stuff works itself out which I believe it can. I do wish to see other promoters stand up too….

  32. Bill Mahoney on April 16th, 2010 9:44 PM

This would be a convenient time for a local media source like the Globe or the Herald to do an in depth story on the future of MMA in Mass.

Some media have covered the sport fairly well the last couple of years so the interest is there. And perhaps an unbiased source with an outside perspective may help the commission see the light.
The state will make no money off the sport if no shows are happening.

  33. Guy Cummings on April 17th, 2010 8:42 AM

BILL MAHONEY VS. DEPUTY STEEL CUP in a special event “castration” match! Dana set it up!!!!!!

  34. Bill Mahoney on April 17th, 2010 2:43 PM

I’ve got 1/2 a mind to read the whole thread and see if I then get the joke. But only 1/2 a mind.
