Below is a press release issued by the AFO.
AFO OVERCOMES NEW HURDLES FOR PLYMOUTH SHOW
American Fighting Organization, after a very successful run of 12 pro-am shows in Braintree, Randolph, and Grantham NH has recently fought as hard as their fighters to keep their April 24 date at Plymouth’s Memorial Hall.
Initially told by a representative of the newly in-charge Massachusetts State Athletic Commission that amateurs would be approved by the time the show went off, matchmaker Mark Vaz quickly completed the 17-bout card, with 12 amateur bouts made, and 4 out of 5 pro fights complete, including 2 AFO title fights.
2 weeks later, when the proposed regulatory organization KRANE which was supported by the MMA community was not voted in as expected, AFO was informed that only pros would be acceptable and amateur fighters would need to be cut.
“It’s been tough on the fighters,” said Vaz from his office in Boston. “A lot of these guys don’t have medical insurance or even jobs in this economy. To spend even $300 to get meds done, plus $75 for a state license to fight, plus $50 each for their cornermen is unaffordable.”
Far the highest fees levied on fighters anywhere in the US ($25 is the next most expensive fighter’s license) the head of the State Athletic Commission Medical Board, Dr. Edgar Ballenas, set up reasonably price eye exams, physicals, and ekg’s for AFO fighters, but they would need to attend their appointments on the south shore, something not practical for many fighters from out of the area. The other issue is that all other states allow fighters to become licensed at the weigh-in. Massachusetts is the only state to require it done in advance. The fighters and coaches, however, are working hard dealing with the new situation, and have been sympathetic to the new requirements the promoters must also deal with.
South Shore Sportfighting, who will feature 5 fighters on the Plymouth show, has been a main-stay for AFO since its inception. Mike Polvere, who’s had 2 of his 3 amateur fights on AFO shows, will make his pro debut on April 24th. Polvere, the function manager at Lombardo’s was instrumental in bringing AFO to the Randolph venue for its February sell-out show. Tom Giove will face the dangerous Christian Rivera of Dragon Warrior MMA of Lynn, who will also provide the exciting Pedro Gonzales to the main event, facing Barrington Douse for the AFO 135 pound title. SS’s Jeff Moore will attempt to even the score against Waikru’s Franklin Isabel. The tough 145 pounder beat wrestling coach Moore last year in Braintree. Moore bounced back in February, defeating previously unbeaten Brian Marino via unanimous decision. Jesse McElligott of Connors MMA will put his unbeaten record up against Muay Thai fighter Josh Mellon in a 205 pound match. Lauzon MMA will be represented by the talented Joey Proctor, while SSS’s Lee Metcalf will face Team Crunch’s Joe Lunn in what looks like a possible fight of the night.
“We are working hard to put together good, competitive fights for this show,” DiLorenzo stated. “In spite of losing our amateurs, and jumping through hoops, we are used to providing our audiences with entertaining, fun and most important, well matched fights, and won’t let them down in spite of the difficulties of losing our amateur program at the time being.”
Plymouth, MA has been the home of world class boxing matches and Mixed Martial Arts over the last few years. Recently MMA has made the local papers in Plymouth but in a negative way. Publicly criticized by the town for a lack of responsibility to the town’s residents (www.wickedlocal.com/plymouth) and improper use of Licenses, one venue that has ran several shows in the past have lost their rights to future shows and another that has been in Plymouth for years cancelled due to the new commission. The American Fighting Organization has taken on the task and the responsibility of restoring the faith of Plymouth residents in MMA. The AFO has been diligent in working with the commission and the town of Plymouth to make sure that we are 100% in compliance with both parties and all obligations are met and exceeded. Tickets for this event titled “Night Of Champions” are on sale now by calling the box office 508-747-1622 or on line at www.afomma.com

Nice to see you’re still on for the 24th. Hopefully the amateurs will get taken care of soon and we can start having more shows. I’m glad Dr. Edgar has worked with the fighters on their medicals. He’s a friend to the sport. Best of luck with the show.
Thanks Kevin,
I urge everyone to in the business, refs, judges, time and score keepers, announcers, Dj’s, pro fighters and amateurs to have their voices heard. Contact the public safety office and find out when the meetings are and go to them. They told me they want to hear from us and I think we all should take them up on that offer.
There were plenty of hoops we jumped through as well as the fighters to be able to fight, being on such a short timeline and expense to get it all done. This show will be great with well match fights as always – get a ticket, get your friend a ticket, get your mom a ticket and let the fighters know it was worth it for everything they had to do in order to perform! Everyone knows this might be the best venue (Plymouth Hall) in NE to see an MMA fight, and we’re still the cheapest ticket out there so come show your support!!
The only Venues I can think of in Plymouth are Memorial Hall and Jungle plex and neither have lost there right to hold events. writers should get there stories strait and stop giving false information to the mma community.
I talked with matchmaker of Reality Fighting today and the show (not venue) “that has been in Plymouth for years cancelled due to the new commission” is false information also. The Apr show was not cancelled but postponed to July 17th until everything was in order for the new commission and they also have a show in October at Plymouth Memorial Hall. Reality Fighting has held MMA shows since April 2001 and they were also the 1st to host a MMA show at Plymouth Memorial Hall under Mass Destruction. They run one of the best organized shows with some of the best fighters in the NorthEast.
Ooops my bad. Untamed was actually running MMA shows in Plymouth before Reality. Don’t wanna give any false information.
Alright im gonna have to drop some knowledge on yous guys. KRANE is going to run MMA in massachusetts into the ground pure and simple. Giving them control over amateur MMA fights is like having Martha Stewart take over the UFC. These guys, mostly Don Rodrigues, have run karate competitions into the ground over the past decade with their greed and pussified rules. These are guys that made POINTFIGHTING more pussy then it ever was and have been draining local competitors for years. Their idea of MMA is “hybrid fighting” with helmets w masks and NO striking on the ground along with a bunch of other pussy rules that will surely make their mark on our sport. Just a heads up fellas, dont say you werent warned……
well said Loco. Can U believe this thread was actually written by a promoter and has the balls to try and throw other shows under the bus just to make her show stand out
Hey Pitbull, I just want to make something VERY clear. KRANE is a major sanctioning body, MA needs one to make shows happen. I reached out to KRANE and they were very interested. The KRANE rules that have been submitted are the EXACT same rules that we have been using in MA and NH for years. They, barring the state getting involved, will NOT change. There will be no helmets and there WILL be striking on the ground. The reason that I did not look to other sanctioning bodies was due to rules such as that. There will probably be multiple sanctioning bodies approved and some oof them will carry a hefty price tag and require promoters to fly in officials since there are currently none who are local. Basic bottom lne is his: If you think that the Amateur scene here in MA has been handled well for the last few years, with KRANE that will continue. It will provide not only rankings and experience for amateur fighters, but also a training ground for officials looking to get involved. All this from a local organization at a lower cost than most. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an email at
refereekevin@yahoo.com
So there is no mistaking what was meant here, “One show canceled due to the commission” was meant until they (the new commission) got sorted out, NOT cancelled BY (I wanted BY in bold but don’t know how to do bold here) the commission, and I agree completely they put on very well matched fights. We were called and asked to run at the Hall when that show was postponed and the other down the street wasn’t happening. @ Mike, I have seen you get into many pissing matches here on the forum over time and I will not engage in one with you, but as far as false info, well maybe if the newspaper articles were wrong, that’s why we put the where the info came from. Calls were made to the Town Hall and the Plex prior to running anything in Plymouth because of what we were hearing and reading locally. Feel free to call me if you’d like to address this further; I know you have both Marks and my number.
As far as Krane goes, being able to run shows with the same refs and the rules already approved, they seem like a pretty good fit and we support them. Like Kevin said, others groups have come forward but the expense attached to them were great.
Maybe there is truth to what every paper prints.
I just found this article in The South shore Wiz paper.
“Production company thrown out of Braintree venue for lying to fans to many times about crowd attendence”
………………………”goes to get popcorn and beer”
“very excitied to see varner out of retirement”.
PETER, I just read your above post. I had no Idea it was you that wrote the above article. Why did you think I was refering to you?
Actually Mike, I didn’t write it but did approve it, thats why I defended it.
If Kevin trusts Krane, then so do I! Let’s just get amateur fights back here ASAP!!!!!!!
Is the above about CFX, who had moved their show from Plymouth to Mansfield?
OH Thank you WarwickWrestler eerrr…. Pete I mean ….Thank you for taking on the task, oh, and the the responsibility of restoring the faith of Plymouth residents in MMA! WoW you are the best . Thank you . Thank You . What a joke . Plymouth will not have you back , mark my words, just like Braintree, Randolph, New Hampshire and soon Plymouth. It is Dilorenzo when talking high and mighty and Warwickwrestler when throwing stones ? Right Pete . The funny thing is that all the organizations who have been to Plymouth in the past will be there again and YOU won’t .HA
1st off you should get your shit straight prior to rambling on about nothing…. 1st – I am not Warwick wrestler, he writes much better than I do, go read my post and then go read his…. Clearly not me!! And that can be verified! ” Mark your words about not coming back to Plymouth?” Yea Yea, I heard that 2 years ago that our 1st show wouldn’t happen, You weren’t really right then either!! Braintree Venue Closed down dumb ass!! The hotel is closed! NH commission and the venue were more than pleased and Randolph, well why don’t you just call them and see how they feel about us seeing one of our fighters works their. Now the release that your complaining about says the venue in Plymouth found themselves in trouble, IT DOES NOT SAY PROMOTION! It does not knock any promotion! and the other is reference to the postponement due to the new commission, NOT BY THE COMMISSION.
And one more fast fast thing here.. As I stated before a few posts back, I don’t write the releases but I did approve it. And when i did I approve it I made sure the calls were made to confirm it and the articles we’re available. The Plex has openly said they have some thing s to workout with the town before they do a show again, which is the same thing the paper said. When we were called to do a show at the Hall we had to make these calls so we didn’t start spending money only to find out there might be a problem. I did have someone in house express not so favorable opinions about another promotion here on the site and when it was brought to my attention the 1st thing I did was call them to make sure all was well – I’m in the business of running shows and promoting shows -thats what we do and most think we do it pretty well, well enough for others to feel the need to trash it! so as I offered before, maineventfan feel free to call me or Mark if you or anyone else in YOUR promotion would like to talk more about it
Actually MAINEVENTFAN, I am WarwickWrestler, and I am insulted that you put my writing ability in the same category as Pete’s writing! I am however curious to know who it is that you are, along with several other fake accounts, I have no problem “outing” myself… anyone else? I mean since you obviously someone else as well.
Now thats just not right!! lol,………………………… I try very hard, spelling was not my strongest subject in school! I even use spell check and it still comes out messed up. I’m easy to figure out if something is me, I use a lot of …… and I use – (the dash, love the dash) and sometimes I use ” ” …… See I just used the …. I just dont know where the periods and comers go.
Thats great John but sorry to disappoint you guys, this is my only screen name and the account was opened using my accurate info and sorry again but I have no Promotion affiliation. See what happens when you nudge a fool! A little defensive Pete. The issue here is you putting out a press release how you are going to ” restore the faith of Plymouth residents in MMA” . You say a venue ” has lost the rights to future shows” and had ” improper use of licences”. These are strong allegations. Is it fair that you signed off on these statements knowing full well they are misleading at best? You say the Plex admits to having somethings to work out with the town then YOU sign off on the press release saying they “LOST THEIR RIGHTS TO FUTURE SHOWS”. Huge difference . Then you set up a link to these articles about this OTHER (than your) venue and you can’t even read the articles. Shame on you . Not mention the release makes the statement that a Promotion cancelled due to the new commision. Another misleading , hurtful and inaccurate statement. What was the true purpose of this “press release”? Thank you a million times . Clown
What’s really funny is that you admit to making calls , gathering info then blatantly twisting it to fit your agenda before our eyes. The MMA community is a little smarter than you may give it credit for . But pat yourself on the back because you are sure to restore faith.
For the record, the MMA community is NOT smarter than you may give credit (see “proposed new regulations” thread).
I know that Dilorenzo cannot spell to save a life, but why does MAINEVENTFAN shout his name with all caps and then capitalize Promotion every time he writes it.
Enough with the promoters bitching, lets call Dana and say “make it happen” especially since that show will probably be the next, and only other show to happen with the fools on the commish!
Sorry Guy about the caps but when I originally made account it was in caps and now when I post it screams in caps. I capitalized Promotion to make a point but will stop if it bothers you. Lol
Pete I did indeed contact you to discuss this matter. i called the number I had on record 508-399-9269 I was told you removed from the position there and went down to RI to open up a gym. I had asked if there was a number to the school and I was told dont bother because it had already closed. If you would like to contact me and lets move forward on tighting up the MMA scene then lets do so. I have called you many times in the past year regarding the sanctioning of mma when you where still employed at LA fitness but never once did you return a call. And pete you do use alias my pockets go deeper than yours and its my job to know these things. 781-727-0626
Let me just take a few mins to re acclamate myself to the drama and shit slinging mentality that must be procured to be here. I did take a brief hiatis from writing posts due to the whole “IP Adress” compromising escapade, but that seems to have toned down a bit and to see people back on, reigniting a flame…well, thats something no man with a sense of intelligence and opinion can afford to bypass. Major props to Johhny Sepulveda for throwing himself out there, taking a stand, and defending not only himself, but his organization as well. Di Lorenzo, be it said your spelling and grammar skills may not be up to par, your focus, knowledge and true grit reveal itself in regards to only posting what you feel to be true articles of fact. You do your research, and write what I believe to be true comments on subjects pertaining to real issues. Now Varner on the other hand…not too much to say here. Defensive and calling out people immediately after a simply written fact? Seems like not only is someone a little scared about their promotions stability, but also the success of others above himself.
My issue here, and it seems to be pretty rampant amongst the rest of the community is simply this: The time, effort, aggravation, and unruly disregard for eachothers promotions is a true testament to what I believe is already being set in motion by the commision. We all see the hassle, hurdles, improper acts, unwise decisions etc, etc,etc that the commision has already set up in place. Wouldnt it be better set as individuals and promoters to ban TOGETHER here on this platform? All I see is offsetting opinions and stances. Dividing not only each individual, but promotion to be its own island standing dormant by itself with no real grasp of ability to make a statement. UNITY, is what this community needs. CFX standing up for AFO, standing up for WCF, and so on. Kev the Ref, who obviously has everyones best intrests at heart(fighters and promoters) has made a few similar statements in regards to us all standing by eachothers needs, be it promotion, manager, fighter, apparel , vendor, fan!
The word COMMUNITY, and Im using caps for you MAINEVENT, cuz thats your style(haha), is just that. Despite the facets of human reason and debilitation, banding together, not isolating, is the real true remedy here. Yes its great to express opinion, to debate, but to call out on eachother? This is a hard lesson I have learned over the past few weeks as well. I myself made a few uncompromising comments towards shows involving XCFL, and CFX. Not that my intention was to slander these individuals, but to draw attention to negative facts, that maybe others saw, but would not relate out loud. To a degree I think it drew attention, but in the end, my own soul searching led me to the distinct annomily, that it isnt good for buisness as a whole. These organizations, just as the fighters and vendors, have to have a unified front. Strong and solid in its concensus, and affiliations. Lets try to bring these facets to the forefront. My apologies go to anyone who read my posts, found fault or disclaimer in them, my intentions, whole heartedly were sincere. The passion that is needed to be in this game can sometimes be overwhelming, but can also be misenterpreted through emotion!
If we arent all on the same page soon, you will see a steady decline in shows, attendance, and general interest in this sport in this area. States like NH, seem to have it down, quality shows, low tension, easy atmosphere, and a general strong sense of what they are trying to accomplish with good intentions for all. Mass needs to adopt these characteristics ourself, use them to our advantage, and create a product the world can be proud of…as well as ourselves. UNITY!!!
“And pete you do use alias my pockets go deeper than yours and its my job to know these things”
hmmm… Is this implying that account information is for sale here? That’s what it sounds like you are implying and if that is not the case than I would assume that Rick would appreciate some clarification on the statement.
Insider , your posts are clearly sincere and well intentioned and I appreciate that fact . That being said , you are probably correct in saying I should not have called out the author of this press release but to publically say a” venue has lost its rights to future shows” when those words are not stated in any of the news articles referenced is clearly misleading and wrong. Again, thanks for the input , it may make me think twice before writing but probably not .
JOHN AFO. Pockets running deep has many implications . To clarify and throw one of your own under the bus, it was someone close to you John that devulged the info. Do you thing all your so called friends are loyal, I have been involved in the sport 4 times as long as you, Your people are my people. dont try to stir the pot by bringing up Rick Caldwells name. I wouldnt ask that kid for shit.
MMA insider you somewhat of a smart person.
Ill take the statement of “somewhat of a smart person” as a compliment. Although I do pride myself on an exeptional ability to translate, and voice my opinion, its also a gift that allows me to read people internally as well. So in regards to your statement, I dont read it as sarcastic, but could be implied, haha, either way, “somewhat” is a far stretch.
And Main event, thanks for the response, and it does only provide better results to think things through before we speak…Im a practitioner of not following my own advice at times as well though. A natural human condition we all must possess and endure!!
I find it comical though how Mr. Caldwell has remained not only silenced but unanimously absent from this conversation, but yet finds himself caught in the whirl wind…haha. Would hate to be in your shoes at times Rick. The price you pay for superior at your trade Im sure.Another curse and blessing in my opinion!!
No pot stirring, looking for clarification, I am sure that I am not the only one who interpreted your comments that way, therefore I asked for clarification. You do not know me or my background, you have no idea how much time I have in this sport or what my resume looks like, so lets not make assumptions. I have been involved with and drawing income from MMA and MMA related projects since 2004, if you have 28 years experience in a business that had it’s North American inception 18 years ago than god bless you, but lets not start throwing things out there for the sake of throwing them out there when you have no idea… It discredits other points that you make.
Yeah, Rick, where the hell are you? Dont you get paid lots of money to babysit these crybabies (and correct their spelling and grammar)?
Ok a few things here I’m gonna ad that won’t be to long.
1st enough with the whole spelling thing, It’s starting to bother me, lol!!! Nah, just kidding!!
I spoke to Varner today on my way to Boston for the commission meeting. Whatever was said or the way it was taken was talked about and i’ll leave it on that, I have nothing else to add at all on that topic.
After leaving the meeting what was said here on this site is neither here or there – We got MUCH BIGGER ISSUES in front of us with the commission. I really feel bad for Joe on that board, it must feel like spitting in the wind. There is SO much I’d add about it and I will in the next few days but I can say I really feel their interested in one show only and once a year at that and you know who they are and it’s not us or any other promoter
and thank you Insider for your kind words……
Im looking for a 145lb pro to fight a fighter making his pro debut,
also a 185lb amateur. May 8th GFL Dover NH

To be honest I think this is BS. I think as adults we are getting away from why many of us train and compete. As an educator and a fighter, I feel ashamed to send my students here. We talk about the perception that people have of us involved with the sport and many of you guys are living up to that image. Why don’t we get back to talking about this fight card? AFO has a great fight card set-up for next weekend and as fans and competitors we should all be happy. It’s been a month between shows and people are more excited with the drama then the actual fights. I think we owe the guys on this card an apology because we are taking away from what they are working so hard for. Rick I suggest you creating an area where everyone can go and piss on each other separate from what’s going on with the fights. This way those that want to watch the soaps and participate are not taking away from the fighters who bust theirs on a regular basis to have their time taking away.
Wow, I miss a day on here and shit goes crazy…I haven’t been intentionally silent, just didn’t have anything to add. When Varner, Pete, John and other “real” people want to argue, that’s fine by me. The only thing I have issue with is when people have multiple screen names and use their 2nd and 3rd names to talk shit about one particular fighter, show or promoter.
I posted a press release from AFO, and if some say information was inaccurate, and others say it is, and they want to argue about it…not sure what that has to do with me. I didn’t write the press release, and I can’t fact check everything.
As far as creating a seperate “piss fest” section of the website, I don’t think it’d work…unless I start deleting every single post on the non-piss fest side of the site, and I’m not patient enough to babysit any more than I already do.
If anyone was at the meeting yesterday, please help clear up these rumors. I hope they are exagerrated because, if not, this isn’t good. Looking for clarification on a few things:
Is it true that the CHAIR of the MSAC did not know what shinpads were and why fighters were wearing them when if fact the footage was from an amateur bout??
Do promoters/matchmakers now have to make the case and fill out a seperate form explaining why EVERY fighter should be allowed to fight pro in MA??
Did commissioners really say that they watched Greg Rebello fight on tv, approved him to fight a 1-4 fighter, them suspended the 1-4 fighter for six months after he tapped from leg kicks and suffered no damage? (even after hearing that the fighters child was in the emergency room and he found out about it right before the fight)
Is it true that a deputy was at the meeting who first did not know who Bill Mahoney, Scott Lockhart, and Josh Grispi were, then wanted to know who Bill Mahoney’s trainers were, and then, 10 mins later referred to Bill Mahoney as a “killer”?
Also, if anyone was there, could they speak to ANYTHING positive that happened yesterday????
Ksturdiv. You are correct about the fighters. It was not my intention to take the attention away fromthem and for that I apologize. I was trying to stick up for a venue that in my opinion was being unfairly ridiculed. Fighters , best of luck win or lose.
just wondering if this event is still on?
Weigh ins are Friday at 3 pm at Plymouth Hall – A few vendors will be set up as well as the cage so fans can have their photos taken with the ring girls and fighters in the cage. Also if you haven’t gotten your ticket yet, If you buy them Friday at weigh ins you receive a drink ticket for the night of the event, each ticket bought at weigh ins equals a drink.
The card will be headlined with Pedro Gonzales against Barrington Douse.
Josh Mellon against Jesse McElligott is another one that I’m really looking forward to seeing. Theo and Mike in their 1st pro fight will also be a lot of action. Joey Proctor will face off against a member of Team Crush and many others…
No full fight card yet?? Why is every org. waiting till last minute????
It’s far from waiting time Reep. Where chasing $75.00 fees, $50.00 fees, eye exams and stupid forms and photos to get these fighters to be able to fight Sat night it all needs to be in the office prior and not at weigh ins. Anyway with the uncertainty of changes we’ll make it’s hard to put something up in stone as much as i’d love to. Plus they still need to approve a few of the fights too.
wasting time I meant there – sorry
I had a fighter the other day ask me if his fight was on because a different promoter told him he heard his opponent was refused his lic, Today we had a gym call asking if the show had be canceled because a promoter heard it was, causing him to worry. I’m not even going to address the promotion but to the fighters and teams that might have gotten calls, we’ll see you at 3pm on Friday for weigh ins.
Pete, can you send me as close as you have to an updated fight card so I can throw a preview up for you?
Fighters all made weight and the last of them got their lic. There are some great match ups tomorrow night and the fighters are ready!! Tickets are on sale through the site, afomma.com, be calling 401-286-3413 and will be at the door as well!!
Great that all fighters made weight, but it would be even better if we knew who those fighters were????????? I can’t find a fight card on your website or on here??? Why is that??
