Help Us With Our Year End Awards!!

byRick ~ December 6th, 2009

It’s about that time again, and just to make sure we don’t leave anyone out, we’re looking for help with some of our year end awards. Years ago, there were only a 10-15 shows a year, so most of the staff writers would attend every show. Now, it seems the amount of shows has tripled, so it can be tough to truly pick the “best” winner for each category. So this year we’re putting it out to you, the fans of NorthEastMMA to help us pick the winners.

Here are the categories:

Rookie of the year-This award is for anyone who made their pro debut in 2009.

Fighter of the year-This award can be complicated. This is for the fighter who had the best year overall. This could be an undefeated year on the local stage, or it could be someone who had a local fight or two then moved on to UFC/WEC. Some years the winner is the top ranked fighter in his weight class, some years it’s someone who won a few big fights. This is always the most complicated award.

Fight Team of the Year-This award goes to the team that had the best year. Usually it goes to a team that has several ranked fighters, or several guys from the team winning big fights.

Fight of the year-This one is pretty obvious, right? One of my personal favorites was Josh Key vs. Luis Felix…tons of slams, tons of ground and pound and finished with a TKO in OT. I’m sure I’m not thinking of a few fights, so please let me know what your favorite fight of the year was.

Submission of the year-usually this award goes out to a “flashy” submission like a gogo, or a flying armbar or flying heelhook..basically anything flashy. I think I already have this one picked out, but I want to make sure I didn’t miss something.

KO of the year-This award is for a KO, not a TKO. It’s typically given for a Rich Franklin vs. Nate Quarry type KO, not an impressive TKO.

Biggest Heart Award-This award can be someone who won late after taking a beating early on, or someone who simply never quit after taking a beating.

Upset of the year-This one is pretty obvious…you all know what an upset is.

Favorite moment of the year-This could be anything…Lauzon and Florian sharing a billboard in Times Square was last years winner.

I appreciate the help, guys.

Rick

Absolutely no bias here whatsoever….Tom Giove, hands down has the biggest heart in the area. In his fights with calash and whatola, he was in bad, bad situations and refused to give in. He had numerous opertunities to give up but didn’t and in the end finished them both. Sure he was left off the rankings, understandably, but it would be a mistake if he didn’t win this award…and I don’t even know this guy, who is he anyway.

Upset of the year: Josh LaBerge defeating Chris Simmons at Bellator FC

    Favorite Moment of the year:

  3. JFITTS on December 7th, 2009 3:01 PM

Biggest Heart: Has to go to Giove

Upset: Morecraft over DIEKMAN easy and early win. I would imagine DIEKMAN was a heavy favorite. Might not be considered an upset to John Burke and Co. though!!

  4. mmafanatic on December 7th, 2009 3:58 PM

i have to agree with the nichols kid for rookie of the year, but i would also nominate him for upset of the year, come on who out there thought this 19 year old kid had a chance against scott rehm

  5. GregPomfred on December 7th, 2009 6:05 PM

Fighter of the Year: Rene Nazare. That dude’s had an awesome year.

  6. kkline_83 on December 7th, 2009 11:48 PM

No bias here either but fighter of the year: Rene Nazare. Took out Brian McLaughlin (TUF contender), Tony Leate (Reality Fighting Champ), and Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov (NCAA All-American wrestler). Will Kerr would of been on that list to but….

  7. Brian McLaughlin on December 8th, 2009 2:53 AM

I know it was back in January but how about fight of the year Rene Nazare vs Brian McLaughlin?

  8. DiLorenzo on December 8th, 2009 10:28 AM

I’ll throw my 2 cents in for rookie of the year – Marino fought 6 times this year, 4 as an amma and twice as a pro – he’s unbeaten and his last fight with DJ Grimes (Spelling??) He broke his hand AND his foot but still won via tko late in the 3rd. Just sheading some light on another great young up and coming fighter

  9. S-Lo on December 8th, 2009 10:28 AM

Nazare is definitely a bad dude.

Could Morecraft be considered for rookie of the year or did he start in 08′? He’d be a great pick as well. Huge future in the sport if he wants it.

I’m a little biased but the moment of the year thingy imo was Grispi giving Pulver a back rub after tapping him.

All joking aside, in this day and age where hype, showmanship and that “in ya face” mentality are so often the norm, it was pretty cool to see such a young kid showing such compassion and class for a pioneer of the sport who deserved nothing less. I know i was proud as hell of him. Good for the sport. That is all.

Oh yeah and that team of the year one. cough cough 32-9.. cough cough.

  10. Matt Bessette on December 8th, 2009 11:04 AM

Fighter of the Year – Rene Nazare
    Biggest Heart – Jon Manley
Favorite moment – Grispi defeating Pulver OR Jon Jones putting on a highlight real over Stephan Bonnar for 3 rounds.
Fight of the Year – Brian Mcglaughlin vs Rene Nazare (best fight i’ve ever seen. this made forrest vs bonnar 2nd place.) Someone has to put this fight on the internet.
Sub of the Year – Saul Almeida’s peruvian necktie was pretty sick
KO of the Year – Travis Bartlett over Josh Watson…i also thought that his WCF7 fight was a KO but his stats say TKO, which idk if that’s true…i like watching him turn the lights off.
Upset of the Year – i’ll agree with laberge/simmons.
Rookie of the Year – IDK how this one is gonna work…Saul Almeida had one fight last year in October, he would have gotten it, IMO, had he just fought that bout in January…I’d say Scott Nichols but he fought in 2007 as an amateur and the rest of his fights this year, so i’ll skip this one.
**EXTRA 2 Cents** Maybe something to think about???
Trash Talker of the Year – Chris Fisette
Biggest Fighter Turn Around – Jay Fortier
Estimated 2010 Fighter of the Year – Hitalo Machado
Sportsmanship Award – Littlefield after he upkicked Ortalani…Ortolani seemed to have a good grasp on the fight, but Lit hit him with a mean upkick…after the fight Mike raised John’s hand shaking his head in disbelief and giving credit to him…

  11. cpalmquist on December 8th, 2009 12:19 PM

Fighter of the Year: Rene Nazare. 3-0 with 3 big wins against top competition.

    Biggest Heart: Tom Giove

Fighter of the Year: Nazare vs. McLaughlin

Upset of the Year: Laberge over Simmons

Team of the Year: SS Sportfighting. I just read on FB these guys went 32-10 this year. That’s insane.

  12. M. Giove on December 8th, 2009 12:35 PM

also on the fight team of the year thing…along with going 32-10, sssf had 4 new champions crowned (stone, thompson, metcalf, giove), not too shabby.

  13. Rick on December 8th, 2009 12:54 PM

    Great suggestions, keep em coming.

And I forgot about most improved/comeback fighter of the year…that is also one we usually give out.

Did anyone see Jason Bennett’s KO’s in worcester? I heard his KO’s over Brendan Lehman and Glenn Allaire were brutal.

  14. Justin Hammerstrom on December 8th, 2009 2:23 PM

Bessette has some great input. I give Grispi fighter of the year. Bartlet Knockout. Biggest heart Littefield. Favorite moment -The Chair Throwing at The last CFX show. Upset- Morecraft vs. Diekman. Sub. of the year Mr. Nasty and his armbar at GFL.

  15. ALEX MMA FAN on December 8th, 2009 2:29 PM

Rookie of the Year: Scott Nichols (Sityodtong) / Jon Ortolani (Gracie Barra NH)

Fighter of the Year: Saul Almeida (Dragon Lair) he fought 5 times in 2009 and won all the 5 fights and he also just won the NECF TITLE againt a tough opponet Joe Manzello!

Fight Team of the Year: Dragon Lair MMA

Fight of the Year: Grandmaison vs Brandao 5×5 min rounds Full force 145lb championship

Sub of the year: Saul Almeida (Dragon Lair MMA) (Peruvian Kneck Tie on Dan O’Keefe) at WCF was pretty sick

KO of the year: Tateki Matsuda (Sityodtong) (Head kick KO) over Aguilano Brandao at GFL

Biggest Heart: John Manley (Link) surviving through the Olson Fight at CZ

Upset of the year: Hitalo Machado defeating John Benoit at WCF

  16. The Pitbull on December 8th, 2009 3:31 PM

Rookie of the year- Ortolani (took it to Moreau) and was dominating Lit. Not too shabby for your first fights as pro.

Sub of the year- Almeida (peruvian necktie)

Fight of the year- Benoit vs. Trites- back and forth striking with a lot of action.

Fighter of the year- Olson (Dominated the local scene)

Fight team- 32-10 says it all (sssf)

K.O.- I like Matsuda’s head kick but I have to give it to Lit for that upkick. It wasn’t pretty but DAMN was it effective and surprised the hell outta everyone!

Biggest Heart- Dan “the ghost” Keefe . His fight with Weatherby tested his heart and his recent one with Southern KO specialist Brett “Bed time” Chism tested him even further. He weathered the storm and eventually got the best of both.

Favorite Moment- Calvin Kattar winning the belt in a fight that wasn’t supposed to go 5 rounds. His first fight past the 1st round.

Upset of the year- Laberge vs Simmons

  17. Joe Kavey on December 8th, 2009 4:05 PM

Asa Buck vs. Nunes amateur fight in Wartown Beatdown 3 I was right there it was so awesome.

  18. dan okeefe on December 8th, 2009 4:06 PM

The peruvian neck tie should win. I didn’t know you could finish it inverted, but apparently you can, ha.

How about Mike Zichelle for rookie of the year. 3 wins in 2009, all first round stoppages, and is fighting for the GFL belt against Nichols in January.

KO of the year: Jason Bennett’s head kick at Wartown beatdown was brutal.

  19. Rick on December 8th, 2009 5:29 PM

Was the headkick against Lehman or Allaire?

  20. DWARRINER on December 8th, 2009 7:51 PM

How about Ross Warriner for rookie of the year 4-0-0 with a 12 sec ko for his first fight and a 7 sec ko in his second fight then a win in a overtime fourth round battle and won with a submision and took his last win at gfl 4 with a tko in the second round and is fighting for the championship belt at gfl 5. Just saying hes done a great job for his first year.

  21. dan okeefe on December 8th, 2009 9:23 PM

Rick, I think it was Lehman. He had two wins in worcester, but I think the head kick ko was Lehman at the palladium.

  22. eksproductions.com on December 9th, 2009 6:33 PM

Don’t forget the behind the scene people…Photographers!! :) , Zack and I put in work!

    Matchmakers? Promoters/promotion?
How about Ryan Parker and his crew.

    The ladies! Ringcard girls…

  23. catch.wrestler on December 9th, 2009 8:00 PM

    Upset of the year
Ken Stone losing to Jason McLean.
Best fight team: 32-10 kinda says it all. SSSF.

  24. Big Pun on December 9th, 2009 8:24 PM

I agree with Hammer Mr nasty for sub of the year in his last GFL fight…..

  25. Biggie on December 9th, 2009 8:58 PM

My Vote for Submission of the Year goes to Mr Nasty over Jeff Soucie via Armbar at GFL 4 – if you don’t vote for it to win, the terrorists win….

  26. Biggie on December 9th, 2009 8:59 PM

Video of the armbar (apparently I can’t embed video) -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x89ZtWA8kGc#t=0m55s

  27. Chocolate on December 9th, 2009 9:52 PM

agreed, i hate terrorists. here is a WAY better angle of the arm bar biggie, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyxxSVWj6iU , it caught me off guard when he did it, i thought that he was going to teleport.

  28. Chocolate on December 9th, 2009 9:53 PM

Lit for biggest balls…no really, you’d think he was giving birth to Krag from TMNT.

  29. shawn on December 10th, 2009 1:31 AM

How about Ralph Johnson for rookie of the year? he is 5-0 all first round wins, all by TKO. his first pro fight was january and the kid has been on a tear ever since.. fighting any chance he can get , against anyone they put in front of him. not to mention when hes not fighting pro mma, he is fighting ametuer mauy thai or boxing. if he doesnt win the award he still had a hell of a year!
And the award for most heart shown in a fight, Dan Okeefes fight against Garth Krane. Dan showed alot of heart that fight and weathered a heavy heavy storm, to pull off the TKO victory with not much time left in the fight… good job to both of them

  30. Justin Hammerstrom on December 10th, 2009 7:50 AM

I vote Chocolate for the smoothest shinny Balls of the Decade!!!!!

  31. Hagopian on December 10th, 2009 10:19 AM

I would agree with Biggie. Mr. Nasty should get submission of the year with his win over Soucie. That was a big, fast win.

How about Glenn Brown defeating John Benoit in WCF for upset of the year? He gave Benoit his first loss, I believe.

I like Ross Warriner for Rookie of the year, too. 4 wins in a row.

Yes let’s not forget the behind the scenes people. MMA Photography is at nearly every MMA event in the Northeast. That includes Zack and Derricc. They are a fixture in Northeast MMA, bringing us great pics and words. How about Kevin MacDonald for Ref of the year? And Kirik Jenness has got to be in there too. How about Dave Ginsberg for Judge of the year? And how about the NH Boxing and Wrestling Commission for the most accomodating athletic commission to work with in New England? Oh, that’s right, they are the only State in New England that sanctions MMA..

  32. Hagopian on December 10th, 2009 10:20 AM

Oh yes and Mike Lit for Biggest Heart, with his out-of-nowhere defeat over a very tough John Ortoloni.

  33. Hagopian on December 10th, 2009 10:24 AM

And Mr. Nasty for most improved/comeback fighter of the year, hands down.

  34. GregPomfred on December 10th, 2009 11:21 AM

I can’t believe we all forgot this. I know I put Rene for Fighter of the Year, but I gotta change my vote to John Howard. 3-0 in the UFC with wins over Tamdan, the vastly underrated Chris Wilson and a KO over Dennis Hallman. Although Rene’s had a fantastic year on the local scene, I think John’s won the bigger fights.

  35. om on December 10th, 2009 12:56 PM

hey catchwrestler i think the stone vs mcclean was fight of year not upset of the year 5×5 minute rounds and a split decision…those two guys tried to kill each other …jason is tough as nails..love to see ken fight him again but ken is fighting at 135 now..love to see gorman vs stone…

  36. Kerrigan on December 10th, 2009 1:33 PM

I have to agree with GregPomfred, Doomsday is always overlooked. 3-0 in UFC over tough opponents says it all. I would also nominate John for Biggest Heart award, retroactively back to the Mandela fight.

  37. ALEX MMA FAN on December 10th, 2009 2:01 PM

Armbar is the first submission that everyone learn on the first day of class and many fights end by armbar submission so that’s nothing big on that!
But on the other side a INVERTED PERUVIAN NECK TIE submission is a next level submission, you don’t see that kid of submission every day and that’s why should win as a Submission of the Year!!!End of History!

  38. Bill Mahoney on December 10th, 2009 4:44 PM

If these can go to guys in the UFC, then I agree with Greg.3-0 in your 1st 3 UFC fights all in one year is amazing.
Submission-didn’t see it, but an inverted peruvian sounds pretty special.

Biggest heart as many said my boy Tom Giove was struggling in 2 of his fights and came back to sub both guys.Ironically his heart is huge.

Don’t know him, but if this Ralph Johnson really was 5-0 he has my vote as rookie.
Ko, well I would say Pat Thompson for his backfist from under sidemount…but I think it was technically a TKO, so Lit’s upkick is my pick.

Upset-can’t really pick one…just know in all the upset’s cept 1 that I see listed above I picked the guy who won to win.So they weren’t upset’s to me.
Team…well I’m biased so I’ll just say other teams should go thru the nemma archives and total the team record.Obviously there’s more to who should get it than wins vs losses(some teams like Lauzon, Sit, etc had guys in bigger shows so the wins are way bigger), but it’s still suggestive of something.

Favorite moment was spending 2 hours before a fight in NH explaining to them that there are competition gloves, sparring gloves etc and that if one fighter is allowed to use his own gloves, then the other fighter must be, etc etc etc.Good times are ahead!

  39. John Benoit on December 10th, 2009 6:53 PM

how about jon jones for fighter of the year. kid beat up everyone. and is now on the cover of fight magazine

  40. dan okeefe on December 10th, 2009 8:33 PM

Ralph Johnson was 4-0 mma i think. Beat Josh Hersey in GFL, Dan Ford and Wayne Harnois in NECF, another guy in I.C.E, all while going 2 or 3-0 amateur boxing, and dominating a muay thai fight for I.cE against a very tough Boston Muay Thai fighter, dropping him 4 times in 2 rounds before the ref called it. those are all really tough guys that have been around, and for him to win them all in the first round is impressive.
and shawn, i appreciate the shout out, but i fought garth last year. only fought saul this year, and was consequently on the wrong end of sub of the year.

  41. dan okeefe on December 10th, 2009 8:35 PM

sounds like warriner, zichelle, or johnson could arguably be rookie of the year. co-honors?

  42. S-Lo on December 10th, 2009 10:09 PM

Biggest heart is a “pick em” between Lit and Tom Giove imo.

Giove deserves extra credit because he’s a midget or as he prefers to be called, a “little person”. Plus, if we don’t vote for him Mark is going to Gioverreact. But on the other hand…

Mike has balls of steel too when he fights but we already knew that so i’m basing my pick on his admission that he allowed Varner near his naked butt on more than one occasion… That’s like dangling a t-bone steak in front of a rabid pit bull.. a big, gay, tanned up, rabid pit bull.

    ..I can’t decide.

  43. terminator on December 11th, 2009 10:49 AM

rookie of the year, ralph johnson mmat, biggest heart of the year, jess the terminator myers fightzone team true, best fight of year amir vs new york bad ass, and best gym of the year tie between sityongtong, and wyi cru

  44. Rick on December 11th, 2009 11:27 AM

I’m not sure why there isn’t more love for Rick Hawn for rookie of the year. His pro debut was January, and he went 5-0 for the year, with 4 wins coming by KO/TKO. He beat Flynn from SSSF who is tough as nails and also beat Brendan Weafer. He’s currently ranked 10, but many of the guys above him don’t want to fight him. There were several rookies who had great years, but Rick seems to be one of the only guys who went 5-0 and also had a win over a previously ranked guy.

  45. Matt Bessette on December 11th, 2009 11:31 AM

I didn’t know we were going past the local scene for awards. I’d give Jon Jones fighter of the year and best moment of the year when he shit on Stephan Bonnar if that’s the case…John Howard had a ridiculous year too, but that’s another UFC guy…how can they get awards given to them for local talent if they aren’t fighting locally anymore? We don’t put the UFC fighters in the rankings so why are we suggesting them for awards, Rick? Rene for fighter of the year…and if i’m taking my own advice and not awarding UFC or WEC fighters, then grispi or bones can’t get the “favorite moment award”…i’d give it to Calvin Kattar after he beat Jon Bermudez in under a minute, then the crowd threw beer and stuff in the cage at everyone. Calvin then decided to start cleaning the cage by himself, throwing the beer back into the crowd (lol) and then saying on the microphone how that is disrespectful to the promotion and to the fighters who train, etc etc…it was as classy as anything i’ve seen.

  46. Matt Bessette on December 11th, 2009 11:34 AM

Oh yeah, and Kudos on the Rick Hawn statement. Give it to him.

  47. Bill Mahoney on December 11th, 2009 2:31 PM

Rick makes a pretty undeniable case for Hawn.As does S-Lo in his thoughts on Var.Who it seems he thinks about alot.

  48. mike varner on December 11th, 2009 3:26 PM

Scott, nothing like throwing salt on an old wound!!!!!

However I would like to nominate myself for the “ASSHOLE of the year” award. And I truely mean it.

I sincerely apologize for my behavior on massmma this year.

  49. greg on December 11th, 2009 5:00 PM

I missed a lot of events but caught most of the WCF, CFX, AFO, and then a few CZ, FF ones. From what I saw:

Rookie: Good call by those saying Rick Hawn. All I saw was him beating people down. Passed the Weafer test with flying colors. DiLorenzo’s suggestion of Marino is good but I think Hawn is more immediately on the verge of bigger things. Haven’t really had the chance to see much Scott Nichols so I can’t say either way on him.

Best fight: Either Stone/McLean or Grandmaison vs Brandao. I can’t decide. Stone/McLean might have been more meaningful in terms of its impact, with Stone heading down to 135 and all. But Grandmaison/Brandao might have been the better pure fight. There was some crazy shit in that fight.

Fight team: SSSF is hard to argue. But also worth mentioning Wai Kru. Not that they’ve necessarily had the most spotless record locally. But they are basically on the verge of being a nationally known name it seems, and there are more and more people associated with it. Heck even Big Baby Davis was training there. Plus John Howard going 3-0 in UFC, so i think all these things count for something.

Submission: Almeida peruvian necktie @ WCF. 10 feet away and I didn’t even know what the hell was happening until it was all over.

KO: Travis Bartlett over Guillermo Echuaco. Unreal punch. The dude’s mouthpiece literally flew all the way across the ring like Olaf Alfonso. Honorable mention: the guy who KO’d Steve Dunn and silenced like 3,000 people from Brockton with one punch.

    That’s all I got.

  50. Matt Bessette on December 11th, 2009 5:06 PM

YEAH! it was a KO over Guillermo, not a TKO…stats show it as a TKO, but I remember it otherwise. That should def. get KO of the year, lol seconds after getting punted in the balls!

  51. greg on December 11th, 2009 5:08 PM

oh yeah also have to nominate lee beane for something. i don’t know what, maybe most frightening ground and pound. the whole cage shakes. seriously, you can feel the punches at ringside.

hard to know how good he could become since nobody’s come even close to testing him or made it past a couple minutes. but watch out.

  52. Matt Bessette on December 12th, 2009 2:02 AM

This has nothing to do with this thread, but I thought of a good idea for a never ending thread…A thread that allows promotors to list upcoming events for the year ahead of time, so fighters can see what events are going on and on what date…I am thinking I’d like to fight in April for Reality Fighting but I’d like to fight before that, say in February too, but I don’t know what promotions are putting out February fights…but if I checked a forum that was created for this, I could plan my fight dates a little better…maybe just a thought. goodnight all.

  54. Rick on December 12th, 2009 11:23 AM

WCF is Feb 26 at the usual location in Wilmington.

  55. Peter Woo on December 12th, 2009 11:38 AM

Fight of the year: McLaughlin vs Nazare
Fighter of The Year: Nazare, based on the caliber of opponents he has defeated
Didn’t see it but the inverted Peruvian neck tie should probably get sub of the year
Rookie of the year: Nick Newell, You guys may not know about him but he is a western mass fighter with only one hand. He won an amateur title in January before going 2-0 as a pro and winning both fights in the first round. I am biased bc I have seen him fight a few times and got to talk to him. He’s a really nice kid with a lot of potential.
Favorite moment: getting to see a bunch of local talent showcase their skills at bellator
Comeback fighter of the year: Josh Leberge

  56. Matt Bessette on December 12th, 2009 2:46 PM

excellent, i’ll talk to Marco after UFC107 this weekend. WAR FUNCH!!!

  57. DWARRINER on December 12th, 2009 3:43 PM

Rookie of the year award is such a tough categorie maybe you could pick a rookie in each weight class. Just a thought.

  58. shawn on December 13th, 2009 3:17 AM

Again, My vote for rookie of the year has to go to Ralph Johnson, he went 5-0 pro MMA 1-0 in ametuer MMA 2-0 in ametuer muay thai, and 2-0 in amatuer boxing… not to mention that all 5 of his pro MMA fights were all 1st rnd finishes via KO or TKO…he is a very active fighter , fighting any chance he gets, against anyone they put in front of him..
Josh Hersy GFL 23 seconds….Jeff Cummings NECF 1min.23…Dan Ford NECF 1min.03 seconds…Chris Jones ICE FIGHTING 46 seconds.. Wayne Harnois NECF 1min42 seconds.. to say the least this kid FINISHES fights!! and all the hardwork, and training he puts in he should get the credit he deserves which is ROOKIE OF THE YEAR!

  67. RockstarFelix on December 17th, 2009 1:33 AM

and you guys should have an amatuer fight of the year…cuz that would def. go to Liem Ngugyn vs asa buck wartown beatdown 3….it was like out of a Rock movie…couldnt even believe what was going down. back and forth till the end.

  68. chip on December 20th, 2009 9:15 PM

rookie of the year should go to Ralph Johnson Jr. he is 5 and 0 all KO’s within two minutes in the first round. I have ben at all his fights and each time he has more people chanting “Ralphy Ralphy” or you will hear someone telling the person they are with watch this guy he is going to destroy the person he is fighting! in closing he is a amasing fighter and shows respect to all other fighters and officals. he trains hard and fights harder thank you for considering him

  69. smackfreek on December 21st, 2009 1:15 PM

Ralph Johnson for rookie of the year.Have you seen this kid fight?? EXPLOSIVE!!! One of the most exciting fighters I have seen in a long time!

  70. tfalwrtr5 on December 23rd, 2009 11:03 PM

Rookie of the Year…Ralph fast hands Johnson…5-0 record doesn’t tell the story…watch this guy’s fights on YouTube…no fight lasting over 2 min of 1st round…R U Kiddin me…a class act to those who know him and train with him but a lean mean wrecking machine in the cage…

  71. DWARRINER on December 25th, 2009 5:39 PM

I looked up ralph johnson and his pro record is 3-0-0 his last fight was in nov.So were is everybody getting 5-0-0.the last guy he faced had a record of 2 wins and 10 losses.Im sure he is a good fighter but rookie of the year im not sure.

  72. lionel young on December 26th, 2009 1:20 AM

i would like to vote 4 myself rookie of the year

  73. DWARRINER on December 29th, 2009 1:07 PM

Again I just like to say Ross (THA WARR ZONE) Warriner for rookie of the year.Just look at the year hes had 4-0-0 winning by tko,ko,submision, showing he is a great all around fighter.Mike Zichelle you could also think about but if you compare their fight records at mixedmartialarts.com Ross and Mike fought Mike young who was a tough guy and they both won by tko in 22 seconds. It should come down to Ross and Mike and ross has a better record and has been more active ross warriner rookie of the year hands down.

  74. DWARRINER on December 29th, 2009 1:09 PM

Also would like to add ross just missed out on the top ten rankings so that should tell you something about the rookie year he has had.

  75. mmafanatic on December 29th, 2009 5:46 PM

MIKE YOUNG WHO IS 3-4 A TOUGH GUY, JUST AS YOU LOOKED UP RALPHYS STATS I DID THE SAME FOR ROSS WARRINER, NOT EXACTLY A WHOS WHO OF OPPONENTS AND MIKE ZICHELLES AREN’T MUCH BETTER, LIKE YOU SAID I’M SURE THEY’RE BOTH GOOD FIGHTERS BUT NEITHER ONE WOULD LAST LONG WITH THE LIKES OF A GUY LIKE RICK HAWN

  76. DWARRINER on December 30th, 2009 1:43 PM

Rick Hawn is also a great fighter with a great record. If you look at the guys he has fought not much better.his toughest fight was his last one in sept and it went the distance. And i dont know how you can say they wouldnt last long against him.Anybody can win in the cage on any givin day they all have heart and guts.I think it would be a great fight.

  77. Matt Peterson on December 31st, 2009 5:50 PM

Rick and I rap about the Year End Awards: http://newenglandfights.blogspot.com/2009/12/nef-39.html

  78. S-Lo on December 31st, 2009 7:56 PM

    Good show matt and rick

Rick Hawn has my vote for r.o.y. He beat a couple very legit guys and got better every fight. The only thing he needs to add to his game in 2010 is having the words “Judon’t Know Who You’re Messing With” printed across the back of his fight shorts. Either way he’s still deserving of rookie of year.
