GFL Announces Featured Fights For Sept 19

byRick ~ August 20th, 2009

Here is some info sent over by GFL about their Sept 19 event.

Global Fight League Announces 5 “Featured Fights”

 Including, Bantam weight Title fight.

September 19th  @ Capitol Center for the Arts

Concord, NH

In the nights Main Event, The GFL will Showcase their first ever “Title Fight”.

The Bantam Weight GFL Title will be on the line in a 5×5 min round fight that will include “Unified” rules.

Matt Smith 5-2 (PMA/Renzo NH)  vs  Christian “Lil Papi” Rivera 4-2 (GSMMA) 135

Both guys are straight off 2 fight win streaks and have looked very impressive in both.

Rivera’s only losses are to teammate and Bellator Vet Colin Tebo (Wai Kru) and previously unbeaten Jose Sanchez. Jose’s only loss came via Matt Smith at the last GFL in a meare :21 seconds via vicious armbar after a sweet hip toss to start things off.

The majority of Rivera’s wins have been in the GFL stopping all his opponents. Rivera has had a thing for fighting Matt Smith since beginning with the GFL and after his last win he called out the former 2 time national wrestling champion for a fight in September.

Matt Smith brings a slick ground attack and as earlier stated his wrestling is not to be overlooked . Matt will need to get the fight to the ground to avoid the newly adopted, strong striking game that Rivera now posses. Smith has yet to see the second round ever and always finish’s quick. Will Rivera impose his will standing or will Smiths ground attack throw a wrench in his plans? Unified rules have been applied and Rivera states that puts this fight in his favor.

Scott Nichols 2-0  vs Scott Rehm 4-3 (ProElite/Florian Martial arts) 185

Awesome Fight! Rehm is a journeyman and his stand-up needs no introduction, his throws have been viewed as dangerous. Couple that with now training at the new Florian Martial arts center and you have a complete package. Nichols looks to gain respect in this fight as for once he finds himself as having home field advantage against the GFL new comer in Rehm. In both Nichols wins he’s been the underdog and each time proved his worth to the crowd but still finds him self in the underdog role here.

Bill Jones 5-2 (Team Chaos) vs Rodrigo Almeida 4-1 (BMAC) 150

Bill Jones is coming off a DQ win over Sityodtong standout Tateki Matsuda after an illegal elbow. Jones has looked impressive for the GFL in both his appearances and steps up to take on formally undefeated Rodrigo Almeida of BMAC. Jones holds a 3-2 record at 155lbs and since dropping to a more suitable 145lbs, he’s unbeaten. Jones is one of the largest 145ers in the area and should have a strength and size advantage here. Rodrigo Almeida’s only loss came to Calvin Katter (7-1) in the last WCF and Rodrigo looks to make his way down to a more suitable 145lb weight class as well. In Rodrigo’s last win he easily handled WFL 155lb champion and BJJ black belt Cesario De Sousa. BMAC speaks very highly of their new team leader as he has continued to establish himself as a top contender. He will meet Jones at 150lbs. Look for this fight to have future title implications.

Jay “Mr Nasty” Fortier 6-5 (Burgess) vs Jeff Soucy  3-2 (Fury) 170

Fortier rides a 3 fight win streak and has looked great lately. Turning his career completely around and adopting what looks to be his new niche in an ever evolving ground game courtesy of a Mr. Alexadre Moreno. Fortier comes off what was a great battle with Chris” The EGO” Fisette and looks to keep the train rolling thru Soucy.Since dropping from the 185lb weight class to 170 Mr. Nasty is undefeated at that weight.

Jeff Soucy hasn’t been shy of stiff competition nor team Burgess for that matter as he battles his second Burgess fighter in a row. Soucy has fallen short to two of the best 170lbers in NE in Dennis Olson and Ryan Sheilding. Before those two back to back fights Soucy sported an undefeated 3-0 record. Look for Soucy to get back to his wining ways here and stop Mr Nasty’s winning streak.

Tateki Matsuda 2-1 (Sityodtong Boston) vs Shanon Slack 1-0 (Lionheart)

Tateki Matsuda – Matsuda is one of the area’s best up and coming fighters in New England at any weight. Tateki offers an insanely dangerous Muay Tai game with vicious leg kicks and superb accuracy with his hands. Before an illegal elbow ended what would have been a unanimous dec. win over a top ranked Bill Jones, Tateki had the fight in the bag. Matsuda like Almeida brings a very technical jiu jitsu game to the table as well. Having spent months in Brazil training and even wining a pro fight down there, he says he is ready to take on the collegiate wrestling phenom in Shannon Slack.

Shanon Slack – A JR College National Champion Wrestler, U.S. Greco-Roman World Team alternate and currently 3rd in the U. S. National Grappling rankings. Slack lives in San Diego, Ca. and will split his training time between Alliance Training Center and LionHeart’s camp in State College. This will be Shanons 2nd professional bout as he takes on a very tough well rounded Sityodtong, Mark Dellagrotte trained Tateki Matsuda. Currently Slack holds grappling ranks above WEC top featherweights Cub Swanson and Shane Roller.

Very good card… I think the biggest change in Mr Nasty is his dedication to the sport. He is now in awesome shape and it shows in his fights. You have to give props to Soucie as this is teh 3rd beast in a row he is fighting.

Its good to see Tateki back in there. The elbow/forearm DQ was an unfortunate thing. I thought the fight was going to be stopped as Jones was taking some punishment.

What can I say about Smitty. He is a great wrestler but I wouldnt discount his standup either. Aother graet fight.

    Another solid card from GFL
