American Steel Cage Fighting Preview

byRick ~ July 27th, 2009

This Friday, July 31 a new MMA promotion will be bringing us their first event live from the Icenter in Salem, NH. The card features a main event bout between Nate “The Future” LaMotte vs. Doug “Flash” Gordon as well as a superfight between two UFC veterans, Kevin Jordan and UFC pioneer Pat Smith. All of their pro fights will be 3 rounds, 3 minutes per round.

There has been a ton of press surrounding the LaMotte vs. Gordan, and as you should expect with local press, they are all over the local guy. I’ve bene reading a ton about Nate, but very little about Doug. In case you aren’t familiar with Doug, he’s 9-7 as a pro, tends to stand and bang, and has a recent KO win over Gregor Gracie by head kick. He seems to fight pretty consistently, with a fight coming every 2-3 months since the start of his career in 2006. Also worth noting is that he fought Marcus Davis in his second pro fight and took Marcus to a decision. Doug is going to have a size and strength advantage over Nate, but Nate is going to have a big edge on the ground. Nate has also shown that he has good enough stand up, and a strong enough chin to weather the storm with good stand up guys, ultimately getting inside to take them down and submit ‘em. This is a very tough fight for both guys, and it’ll come down to whether or not Nate can take him down.

In the nights co-main event, “Mr Big” Al Buck takes on Pat Audinwood. Al is 6-7 overall, but is very exciting to watch. He pushes the pace and hits hard. Pat has fought around here a few times, and is 7-0-1 in his pro career. The majority of his wins are by decision, and he has shown throughout his career that he can really take a shot. This fight has fireworks written all over it, and Pat’s fight strategy will make the difference in this one, win or lose.

In the nights Superfight, Kevin Jordan takes on Pat Smith. I have no idea what to say about this one. Since losing to Josh Diekmann at Untamed 3 by knee injury, he went 2-0 in 2007, but is 0-2 since then. I remember hearing interviews from him in the past saying that it’s tough to train while fighting full time, so maybe the two fight losing streak can be attributed to that. Smith is a true pioneer of the sport, fighting in both UFC1, and making it to the finals of UFC 2. He had only 1 fight between 1999-2006, but has been fighting often since then. He’s actually 10-2 since 2006, and has recent wins over Brad Imes and Eric “Butterbean” Esch. Almost all of his wins since 2006 have come via TKO. Whether you’re a big fan of these guys or not, this is a really cool fight. We have a guy from UFC1 &2 taking on a guy from UFC 53 &56, and both guys love to bang. This shouldn’t go the distance, and no matter who knocks the other out, it’ll be exciting.

Another fight that excites me is Ryan Schieding vs. Carlos Nieves. I’m not sure what Carlos has been up to, but he was always exciting to watch, but hasn’t fought since April of 2007. Schieding is slick on the ground, and has improved with every fight. I think he has too much grappling for Carlos but you can never count out a guy who hits as hard as Carlos does.

  2. Rick on July 27th, 2009 9:53 PM

I heard he’s still training, but putting his time into college. He hasn’t fought in about 18 months.

Very Decent card for a first card.

I really like the Adam McQuad vs Brian Demuro fight!

Adam is super tough and thats a tough pro debut but i think Adam takes it TKO.

Good Luck to both Nate and Ryan too…… TEAM BURGESS!

Though it is a small card as compared to some of the other shows, the card is solid. There are like 6-7 fights that I’m really interested in, and the others aren’t bad either.

I havent heard anything about this show.
    Do they even market?
The link to their website is just the event poster and ticket information. no content what so ever? No fighter list, no pictures, no objective, nothing.

I called the Icenter and asked about the amount of tickets available and what the capacity is over there.

    3000 person capacity
    2,632 tickets available………….

Its their first show, Dont be a dick.
They have marketed it actually, maybe you just are blind to seeing a new promotion spread its wings. Dont be ignorant, just google the org. name and you will see the articles on Nate Lamotte, Kevin Jordan, Pat Smith etc.
If i had the money i’d go, its actually not far from where i live. Im going to CFX.
    Cheers
