National News July 2009

byRick ~ July 5th, 2009

July 2009 marks a huge milestone for MMA, UFC 100, and one of our local favorites is set to perform on the undercard. Jon Jones took the local scene by storm last year, but was gone as fast as he came…it seemed right about the time everone said “wow, this kid is going to be something special” he was brought in by the UFC on short notice and hasn’t looked back since.

Jones is set to take on Jake O’Brien at UFC 100. Jake is going to be the biggest test of his career as Jake has been in with guys like Andrei Arlovski, Cain Velazquez and is currently 4-2 in the UFC. Jake spent most of his career at heavyweight, and is a pretty big guy for 205. Both fighters are young (Jones is 21 and O’Brien is 24), both are great wrestlers and good strikers. This should be a great fight, and hopefully it makes the main card so we can watch our local boy perform.

Also on the card, Tom Lawler takes on CB Dalloway. While Tom isn’t from this area, he fought twice for Untamed and went 2-0 beating Cesar Barros and Travis Bartlett in the first round.

Good luck to Jon and Tom at UFC 100. We’re hoping to have a chance to talk with Jon before UFC 100, so check back for that interview.
