GFL brings their brand of MMA back to Concord, NH with GFL 3“Live Free or Fight” on June 12. The card is pretty solid from top to bottom, and the card features a bunch of guys who have looked good for them in the past.
Main Event
185# Scott Nichols 1-0 (Dragon Warrior) vs. Ben Hudson 2-0 (PMA)
Nichols is coming off a big win over Chris Fisette in the main event of the last GFL, and he is yet to taste defeat as a pro or amateur. He doesn’t have as much experience from a training stand point as Hudson does, but Nichols is a young, aggressive kid who never quits, and you really can’t teach heart. Hudson has looked like a monster in his fights, and he recently joined up with Team PMA, which includes Woody Weatherby, John Benoit, Chris Grandmaison, Justin Homsey and the rest of those guys. Before the “but I thought they were with Renzo NH?” question gets asked, Renzo Gracie NH is the GI BJJ program that has their home at PMA. From what I understand, the fight team is no longer called “Renzo Gracie NH” but it’s the same school with the same fighters.
145# Bill Jones 4-2 (Randalls/Rage Fighter) vs. Tateki Matsuda 2-0 (Sityodtong)
Jones rebounded from a loss to John Benoit with a win over Eddie Felix at 145 at the last GFL. It seems Jones has found a new home at 145, and he takes on a very tough guy in Tateki Matsuda. Matsuda is coming off a KO win at Untamed, as well as a submission win in Brazil. Matsuda is well rounded for sure, but I have to think Jones game plan is to take him down.
170# Chris Fisette 2-1 (Guy Chase) vs. Jay Fortier 4-5 (Burgess)
Fisette had a two fight streak snapped by Nichols and now looks to take Fortier’s streak away from him. Jay looked real impressive in his win at Untamed and now rides two straight wins. These two HATE each other, and that may impact the way this fight goes down. If I’m being honest, Jay has too much BJJ and too much experience for Chris. However, with their being so much hatred between these two, Jay will likely enter the fight angry, and if he goes out there looking to beat Chris up, and not just get the win, he could find himself in some serious trouble. Chris hits hard, and is moving down in weight, so he should be bigger and stronger than Jay. If it looks like a street fight, I could see Fisette beating him. If it looks like an MMA fight, I think Jay submits him.
145# Justin Homsey 3-1 (PMA/Renzo NH) vs. Joe Brennan 1-1 (Extreme MMA)
We all know how good Homsey is. He’s coming off a submission win over Brandao, and is one of the best grapplers fighting locally at 145. From what I hear, Brennan is a purple belt in BJJ, so he could push Homsey on the ground.
120# Josh Spearman 7-18 (Dragon warrior) vs. Peter Cole 2-2 (Bombsquad)
Both guys have recently fought Mike Flores, and they both put on some of the best fights I’ve ever seen with Flores. Cole will be bigger, and more polished than Spearman, but Josh’s style can be really tough to deal with. I have no idea who wins this fight, but it’s likely the most entertaining fight on the card, and it likely goes the distance.
155# Musaffar Abdurakmhanov (Sityodtong) 1-0 vs. Jose Valentin 2-2 (American Fighting Acad.)
Moose is 1-0 with his pro debut being a win over Eric Henry, who is a really good fighter at 170. He is an absolute stud wrestler, and he’s taking on a guy with good stand up and not a ton of wrestling. Valentin’s two losses were to Jamie Campbell and John Manley, so he’s been in with tough guys before, but Moose’s wrestling is on a completely different level than anyone around here at 155.
135# Matt Smith 4-2 (PMA/Renzo NH) vs. Jose Sanchez 2-1 (Dragon Warrior)
Both of these guys are undefeated at 135, and the winner of this fight likely positions themselves for a GFL title shot in the very near future. Sanchez has shown some good ground and pound in his previous fights, but he better have a different game plan in this one because Matt Smith is a national champion wrestler, and Jose has literally no chance at taking him down. Smith does pull guard looking for guillotines fairly often, and if he misses one of those, Jose could pound him a little, but Smith is impossible to keep on his back. Jose has the advantage on the feet, and he’ll have to hit Matt early and get in his head to win this one.
Rounding out the rest of the card:
140# DJ Grimes 0-1 (The Shop) vs Keith Rodriguez 2-0 am 0-0 pro (Team Fury)
155# Josh Hersey 1-1 (Cage Strikers) vs Steve Butler 1-1 (Dragon warrior)
135# Christian Rivera 2-2 (Wai Kru/Green Stout MMA) vs Trevor Stone 1-1 (Seacoast BJJ)
185# Brent Bergeron 0-2 (Natural Born killers) vs John Barnaby 0-0 (PMA/Renzo NH)
170# Keith Bishop 0-0 (Ragefighter Academy) vs Kade Thistlewood 0-0 (Cage Strikers)
Amateur Fights
185# Sean Nichols 0-0 (BMAC) vs Nick Vaughan 0-0 (Ravenous)
155# Jimmy Davidson 2-0 (Sityodtong) vs Mike Jacobs 0-0 (Green Stout MMA)

Looks like a good card. Good luck to the Sityodtong guys and the BMAC guys.
No Heavy’s ?????what a shame!
Fortier and Fissette hate eachother? I don’t think Jay cares either way about Ego. Ego is inconsequential to Mr. Nasty. Just another guy for Jay to fight and beat.
“Well listen here John Hagropian!! All the nastimaniacs are coming together and when those forces explode brother there in Concord New Hampshire on June 12 I dont think the structure of that great building is gonna hold brother! And when that 20,000 lb cage is lowered from the sky brother and that steel cage door is slammed tight and the only thing hiding Chris Fissette from my brother Nasty is his Ego….THE BLOODS GONNA FLY HELL FIRE AND BRIMSTONE IS FALLIN FROM THE RAFTERS!! and when all’s said and done, when the smoke settle and the dust clears Mr Nasty’s hand will be raised standing atop Chris’s crushed and bruised ego….”
No one calls him Fisette anymore. its just The EGO. Dont act like you dont knnow who he is. There’s the Natural, The Ice man, then the EGO.
Weather you love him or hate him, you know who he is.
So that there is no confusion, i want to clarify that the Moose vs Valentin fight is at 160lbs. Both fighters are aware, but just incase they see it. it is at 160lbs.
GOOD LUCK TO HOMSEY AND SMITTY!!! YOU GUYS ARE THE BALLS….Also a shout out to Nasty GOOD LUCK!!!
Weather refers to the temperature outside and if we’re going to get rain or sun.
I believe the word you’re looking for is whether, and the ego sucks.
Smarter is funny. Vey funny. BTW, I’m still a Benoit fan.
EGO, Watcha gonna do when the NASTIMANIACS Run Wild On You!!!!!!!
Hagopian I miss your sweet Ass.
Maybe I should change my name to FunnierThanYou. No matter what my name is, Mr Nasty is going to beat the shit out of the ego.
Just wanna give a shout out to my lil bro in law Josh “lil evil”….
good luck baby bro….
Good luck Nasty, Billy, D.J……Lookin forward to this card.
