“Finally” Cage Fighting Xtreme Review

Before you guys ask why I have two reviews, I want to let you know what’s up. I had asked Shelly to review the event, and when Mark Daniels didn’t recognize one of my normal writers in the building, he wrote one for us too…I figure it makes sense to post both. Here is Shelly’s.

CFX Ring Announcer was right on when asking fight fans “Can you dig it?” with last nights event “Finally” taking off with 12 explosive bouts at Memorial Hall in Plymouth, MA.

Bout 1: Johnny Kim (BJKA) vs. Rob Costa (Team Jba)

Costa comes out with a flurry of punches knocking Kim to the ground as Costa lands in half guard. Costa gets to side control as Kim scrambles but Costa mounts him eventually getting Kim in a crucifix and continues to deliver punishment until the end of the round. Round two both fighters go toe to toe landing kicks, punches and knees before taking it to the mat, where Kim up kicks Costa to the face before he falls into his guard. Costa delivers elbows and strikes opening a cut at Kim’s eye. By round three both men look tired but Kim lands kicks to Costa’s legs before shooting in for a takedown. Kim mounts Costa and tries for a rear naked choke but Costa manages to stand and Kim delivers another brutal leg kick but Costa counters with a powerful right cross taking Kim to the ground where both remained busy till the end of the round. Judges scored the fight 29-27, 29-28 , 30-26  with Costa winning by unanimous decision.

Bout 2: Jose Adriano (Wai Kru) vs. Doug Sonier (Sitan MMA)

Both fighters came out exchanging but Adriano’s arsenal of kicks loaded with teeps to the body and chest and brutally loud roundhouses to the legs clearly dominated as he clinched Sonier piercing his body with stabbing knee strikes putting him on the run with a combination of punches that made it difficult for Sonier to get any advantage with attempted takedowns. Adriano finished by climbing on Sonier’s back while up against the cage dropping him to the mat and effortlessly tapping him with a rear naked choke in the first round.

Bout 3: Chris Cole (ABF) vs. Nick Santos (Team Fury)

This bout opened with a vicious exchange of combination strikes and roundhouse kicks with Cole attempting to hit Santos with a spinning roundhouse to his head. Both fighters managed to find themselves exchanging guillotines but Cole’s prevailed even after Santos picked him up and slammed him to the mat. Cole hung on and cinched the guillotine forcing a tap from Santos in the first round.

Bout 4: Anthony Kaponis (Independent) vs. John Downey (Team Xtreme)

Kaponis went straight for the takedown mounting Downey quickly taking his back focusing his attempt at a kimora then a figure four but transitioned to finish with a rear naked choke that was barely on, making Downey tap instantly without any effort to defend it, giving Kaponis a first round victory.

Bout 5: Glenn Reaves (MMA of SM) vs. Mike Malvesti (SSSF)

Malvesti came out of the blue corner with the start of what would be a great night of fights for South Shore Sports Fighting, charging like a bull seeing red instantly driving Reaves to the mat and mounting him where he finished by flattening Reaves out on his back and proceeded to ground and pound for what would be considered an easy kill.

Bout 6: Eric Hurd (Team Xtreme) vs Pierre Pierry (CCFA)

Pierry entered the cage stomping up and down giving fans an indication of what was coming down. During the first round Pierry scored single leg takedowns and escaped Hurds guillotine attempt by picking 170lbs of muscle up like it was nothing slamming Hurd to the ground! The second round opened with Hurd landing a hard kick to Pierry’s ribs but Pierry took Hurd down with another HUGE body slam! Landing in half guard Hurd attempted a guillotine but winds up defending against Pierry’s continued pressure and numerous elbows and strikes from guard the remainder of the round. In the third round Hurd attempts another head kick completely missing, and Pierry scores another leg takedown where they remained on the ground with Pierry in Hurd’s guard. The judges scored the rounds 26-29 / 25-29 / 27-29 giving the win to Pierry by unanimous decision.

Bout 7: Greg Mendes (Mendes MMA) vs. Mark Glove (SSSF)

First round finish goes to Glove after gaining side control after a single leg take down which sends Mendes scrambling to defend by holding Glove off with half guard, but it was to no avail as Glove slips in a nasty one wing arm triangle choke across Mendes face making him tap immediately!

Bout 8: Lionel Young (BJKA) vs. Abe Pitrowski (Burrills BJJ)

I wondered if Abe Pitrowski was thinking “will no joyful voice be heard, let no man look up at the sky with hope and let this day be cussed by we who are ready to wake the Kraken!” as he entered the cage last night wearing a Davy Jones mask as he faced his opponent Lionel Young. The first round went back and forth in an all out explosive war between these two fighters returning vicious attacks that included Young doing countless body slams, Pitrowski kneeing him to the head, attempting an arm bar which Young escapes only to find himself in a very deadly rear naked choke which ended the round. The second round opened at a slower pace as Pitrowski misses a head kick, but Young gets yet another body slamming double leg takedown landing him in Pitrowski’s guard and gets caught in a one wing choke but manages to free himself. The ref stands both fighters back up and all those Herculean body slams appear to have taken their toll on Young who showed signs of exhaustion as he dropped to his knees before successfully taking Pitrowski with another double leg takedown only to land in his guard and have to escape a vicious arm bar. By round three Pitrowski lands kicks to Youngs legs and head. Once again from his knees Young takes Pitrowski down only to land in his guard and fend another arm bar and triangle before the battle is done. Judges scored this fight  29-28 / 29-28 / 28-29. Pitrowski won by split decision.

Bout 9:Shawn Galano (Eclectic MMA) vs. Bobby Favors (Independent)

In this heavy weight bout what can I say other than don’t get in the cage with an opponent who outweighs you by what I’m guessing was a 100 lbs and knows how to move on the ground. Galano’s attempts to scramble and get back to his feet and escape Favors sheer mass was futile. Favors smothers Galano in north and south choke suffocating him with his girth.

Bout 10: FernandoRivera (Independent) vs. Bill Mahoney (SSSF)

Mahoney shoots for a takedown but Rivera sinks what looked like an its all over guillotine that Mahoney had to reassure the ref by waving to him that he was ok. Being very technical Mahoney escapes to side control then scrambles to north and south and attempts a one-wing choke and baits Rivera into a guillotine that ends the fight. Mahoney wins with impressive ground technique in the first round.

Co-Main Event: Mark Griffin (Bishops) vs. Gerry Spiegel (Independent)

Griffin dominated the first round as Spiegel took a beating loaded with piercing strikes to the kidneys and cutting elbows to above Spiegel’s eye. The ref stopped the fight in the middle of the round for the ringside doctor to make sure Spiegel was ok to continue. The doc gives the ok and both fighters start back on the ground as Griffin takes Spiegel’s back attempting a rear naked choke but Spiegel scrambles just surviving the round. In the second round there is an exchange of kicks and punches with Griffin taking Spiegel to the mat delivering more punishment forcing Spiegel to turtle. Griffin takes Spiegel’s back sinks his hooks in and proceeds to ground and pound before the ref stops the fight due to strikes giving Griffin the win.

Main Event: Lee Beane (Wai Kru) vs. Christian Morecraft (CCFA)

These heavy weights entered the cage with the intention of keeping their belts as they stared each other down. Both fighters quickly found themselves on the ground with Bean taking Morecraft to the mat and attempting a knee bar. Both got back to standing as Morecraft attempted to sink a guillotine but Beane escaped kicking Morecraft and delivers a right cross that Morecraft counters driving Beane to the fence delivering a knee to the chest and dropping Beane with a vicious short right on his way down. Morecraft pounds Beane with punches to the face forcing Beane to tap. Morecraft takes the CFX belt home.
