Untamed 30 Review

Untamed 30: Caged Combat eminated from one of their usual hotspots, White’s of Westport. It featured nine great fights that wavered between wars that went the distance and quick finishes. Luckily, they didn’t have the same ring girls as the first time they went there a few years ago.

Amateur Fights: 3 rounds x 3 minutes

145 lbs: Chris Monsini (IMDC) vs. Steve Gaudet (Fight Zone)

Round 1: Monsini comes out with leg kicks and punches. He’s landing while Gaudet misses. Monsini is landing the bigger shots while Gaudet lands some pawing jabs. Monsini gets a takedown to side mount while Gaudet looks for a guillotine.

Greg’s score: 10-9 Monsini

Round 2: Monsini is throwing more power punches, but appears to be slowing down. He lands some lefts and rights, but Gaudet gets his own in. Monsini clinches and Gaudet lands a few knees. They break and circle where Monsini lands a body shot and leg kick. Monsini lands a left hook, but Gaudet counters. Both get some shots in before the bell.

Greg’s score: 10-9 Monsini

Round 3: Monsini comes in with big hooks and takes Gaudet down to guard. Gaudet tries for another guillotine, but can’t sink it. Monsini spends the rest of the time in guard, landing some punches. He flurries before the bell.

Greg’s score: 10-9 Monsini

Winner by unanimous decision: Chris Monsini

185 lbs: Vaughn Lahr (Independent) vs. JC Jasa (Fight Zone)

JC Jasa looks like a later-years Jim Morrison.

Round 1:  Lahr comes out with a slam to side mount. Jasa gets up, but is the victim of a far bigger slam. Again Jasa gets up to a clinch. Jasa lands some knees and they break. Lahr kicks and then catches Jasa’s kick, setting up a takedown to guard. Jasa misses an arm bar, but uses it to get on top. Lahr misses his own arm bar and Jasa uses it to pass. He mounts and lands some very clean punches, knocking Lahr out.

155 lbs: Jimmy Collins (Aggression) vs. Sam Eliot (Boneyard)

Round 1: Eliot comes in with punches and Collins clinches. Eliot throws some knees and Collins punches to the body. They break and Collins takes Eliot down to side mount. Collins moves to north-south and pounds the ribs. Eliot escapes to his knees, but Collins takes him back down to side mount.

Greg’s score: 10-9 Collins

Round 2: Collins hits a body shot and Eliot responds with a front kick. They clinch and work against the cage. After landing some strikes, they break and Collins takes Eliot down to half guard. Eliot gets back up to a clinch, where Collins lands punches.

Greg’s score: 10-9 Collins

200 lbs: Jay Greenberg (Gillett’s) vs. Jed Donovalis (Fight Zone)

Round 1: Donovalis lands punches and gets a takedown to guard. He quickly passes to mount, where he uses the cage to keep from getting bucked off. Greenberg is able to roll out to the top of guard, but Donovalis locks in a guillotine in the transition. Greenberg taps.

After a while, Hernandez gets the takedown. DePina gets up to his knees, but Hernandez gets on his back and locks in the rear naked choke for the tap. In celebration, Hernandez’s coach, Mat Santos, climbs up the cage like an illegal crossing the border.

Great night of fights!! Congrats to all who fought!! I’m looking for an un-biased opinion on the main event between Jay and Damian. To me the fight was stopped early. No disrespect to Kevin (who is one of, if not the best refs. locally) or Damien. It was clear to me ringside that Jay was defending himself while the punches from Damien were being thrown. Jay’s arm never dropped, his head never hit the mat, he had knee to belly, he did not turtle. Hopefully someone more qualified to give an opinion on this topic than me would be appreciated. If you are intelligently defending yourself the fight should not be stopped is how I see it and to me I can’t see how anyone could say Jay was not doing that.
