CFX returned to the Plymouth Jungleplex for the third time on Saturday night for “Rumble in the Jungle 3″ which featured 22 total fights for a monster card in front of a large audience. Continuing with the big, fast-paced, spectacle shows that CFX has become known for putting on, 16 of 22 fights on Saturday ended inside of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. While the number of fights might seem overwhelming, the show moved along at a good clip with 4,162 people reported to be in attendance. The place was packed and full of energy.
Heavyweight Josh Diekman took on super-heavyweight Bobby Favors in a surprisingly strategic and technical main event. Diekman, coming in off of a tough and one-sided loss to Christian Morecraft in his last outing, weighed in at 263 pounds but was dwarfed by the 367 pound Bobby Favors. Favors showed patience, good composure, and sound boxing technique for such an enormous guy, and kept Diekman at bay for the entire first round. Diekman, despite having a significant speed advantage and ability to land first, was hesitant to engage Favors in all-out exchanges. Favors showed good counter-punching every time Diekman waded in to attack. Diekman finally found the opening he needed midway through the second round, landing a crushing blow that sent Favors down to the mat. Following up with a few shots to seal the deal, Diekman rebounded nicely from his prior loss.
Christian Morecraft breezed through his fight with the always game but over-matched Jason Dolloff, scoring a TKO early in round 1. Morecraft had opportunities to take the fight to the mat, but instead opted to work his striking, which included several snapping kicks to Dolloff’s midsection. Morecraft, the Reality Fighting heavyweight champion, issued a challenge after the fight to reigning CFX heavyweight champion Lee Beane, who entered the cage and gladly accepted the bout. Beane vs Morecraft is poised to be the most meaningful local heavyweight bout in some time, and should be the stiffest test that each of the undefeated fighters has ever faced. The fight is scheduled as the main event for CFX’s next show on April 3rd in Mansfield.
Brett Oteri continued his winning streak by outlasting the talented Rigo Dominnicci in 2-round war of attrition. Oteri, known for his vicious ground and pound, was only able to get the fight where he wanted for a few seconds in the first round, and was lit up and cut open by Dominnicci on the feet. Oteri fought through it in the second period, aided by Dominnicci sustaining an apparently broken left hand while in dominant position. Oteri found the will to keep fighting despite the grueling pace, and finally sunk in a fight-ending rear naked choke submission on Rigo, who left the cage gingerly holding his left hand in severe pain.
Steve Dunn again rode a huge wave of audience support to another win inside the CFX cage, needing only 40 seconds to blast through the over-matched Joe Kavey, who has yet to pick up an MMA win in his career. Dunn now needs to prepare for a much stiffer challenge at the next CFX when he takes on Fred Mello in a welterweight showdown on April 3rd.
Damien Trites was unfazed by the aggression and striking prowess of Jason Sarbacker, who came out guns blazing throwing kicks and punches at the defensive Trites from all angles. Trites jumped and pulled guard, confident that he’d be able to neutralize Sarbacker more effectively from his back than anywhere else. 20 seconds later Sarbacker was tapping from a tight triangle choke, a move that Trites has used to win 3 of his last four fights, and 2nd in a row after a tough decision loss to John Benoit at WCF 7 last June.
Eclectic MMA head and local legend Paul Curtain had what sounded like 1,000 close friends in the audience when he made his MMA debut against the experienced super heavyweight Artie Mullen. Curtain effectively mixed together his years of traditional martial arts experience with an all-out brawling style of attack that left Mullen overwhelmed and out of answers early in the first round. Curtain’s post-fight comments left it unclear if he would be returning to fight in MMA again, but his supporters were able to leave satisfied.
Pat Schultz picked up an impressive victory over Fernando Rivera in a bruising striking battle. Schultz returned to action after a long layoff from a badly injured hand, but showed no ill-effects as he landed bombs throughout until finally putting Rivera away midway through the first.
Ben Pittsley picked up the unofficial submission of the night honors when he caught Brian Anderson in a nasty calf slicer compression lock in one of the evening’s amateur bouts. Matt Hubert, Steven Banisik, Mark Giove, and Lionel Young also impressed.

MATT HUBERT vs MARLON REIS (Amateur 3×3, 170lbs)
Blue: Hubert – DMA, Red: Reis – MSA

RUBEN REY vs JP WHITE (Amateur 3×3, 145lbs)
Blue: Rey – Rock Star, Red: White – Lauzons

Blue: Duffy – Eclectic MMA, Red: Conley – Bishops
Round 1: Conley controlling position. He gets mount, then Duffy’s back. A lot of scrambling and position changes. Conley looking for an armbar and loses it, but then finds a head/arm choke late in round 1 for the win. Duffy put up a good fight but Conley was too much.
Brad Conley wins by submission, late in round 1.
MATTHEW KAPONIS vs JOE REVERDES (Pro 3×5, 155lbs)

Kaponis working ground and pound, not much getting through at first but he wears down Reverdes and finally the ref jumps in.
Matthew Kaponis wins by TKO from the mount, late in round 1.
JASON RINQUIST vs STEVEN BANISIK (Pro 3×5, 190lbs)
Blue: Rinquist – Eclectic MMA, Red: Banisik – Tri Force

Steve Banisik wins by submission 1:17 of round 1.
JOHN DOWNEY vs AARON MACKINNON (Pro 3×5, 170lbs)
Blue: Downey – Team Xtreme, Red: Mackinnon – Wai Kru
Round 1: Downey clinches up but Mackinnon takes him down and into side control and then takes Downey’s back. Lands a few punches and Downey is tapping out quickly. He’s holding his neck and apparently had a previously hurt neck and no need to get wailed on, hence the quick tapout.
Aaron Mackinnon wins by TKO at 1:13 of round 1.
ANDREW ROBERTSON vs MARK GIOVE (Pro 3×5, 150lbs)
Blue: Robertson – MMA of Southern Maine, Red: Giove – SSSF

JASON DOLLOFF vs CHRISTIAN MORECRAFT (Pro 3×5, heavyweight)
Blue: Dolloff – Team Angry – 307lbs, Red: Morecraft – CCFA – 255lbs
Round 1: Morecraft showing good kickboxing skills. He’s got a big edge in speed over Dolloff and throws a big kick to the midsection. Dolloff is able to hold onto the leg and try for a takedown, but Morecraft defends and ends up on top of Dolloff on the mat. Morecraft stands it back up and looks like he wants to work on his striking. Big punch drops Dolloff. Another kick to the midsection. Good power in the strikes and it’s over.
Christian Morecraft wins by TKO round 1.
GLENN REAVES vs LIONEL YOUNG (Pro 3×5, 185lbs)
Blue: Reaves – MMA of Southern Maine, Red: Young – BKJA

BARRINGTON DOUSE vs ROBBIE LEROUX (Pro 3×5, 135lbs)
Blue: Douse – American Fighting Arts, Red: Leroux – Wai Kru
Round 1: Douse throwing low kicks and wants to keep this fight standing. Leroux times a low kick for a takedown. Douse able to get back standing. Leroux takedown to the side and throwing good knees, and then gets full mount. Good ground and pound, tries for a RNC but nothing there. My score: 10-9 Leroux.
Round 2: Douse still looking to get his striking game going. He lands a nice knee in close and Leroux is looking to be tiring. Leroux shoots in but Douse keeps it standing. Douse gets good position in the clinch and launches a knee to the face, and then follows Leroux to the ground and throws elbows and hammer fists until the ref jumps in. Good fight, good win for Douse.
Barrington Douse wins by TKO at 1:59 of round 2.

RIGO DOMINICCI vs BRETT OTERI (Pro 3×5, 170lbs)
Blue: Dominicci – Tri Force, Red: Oteri – Lauzons
Round 1: Rigo lands some good strikes. Oteri finally gets him down to the mat in guard. Good action, both guys working hard. Oteri on top throwing hard as Rigo gives up his back. Ref stops them for Oteri hitting the back of the head. Back standing, Rigo nails Oteri with a big shot and Oteri goes down, onto his back, his forehead busted open and bleeding. Rigo follows him down but Oteri is still there and pulls Rigo tight to recover. Rigo pulls away and standing over Oteri gives several big kicks to his legs. Oteri back up to his feet, looking tired. My score: 10-9 Rigo.
Round 2: Rigo low kick. Oteri throwing side kicks that don’t have much power behind them. Oteri fakes another one and shoots for a takedown, catching Rigo off-guard. Rigo manages to take Oteri’s back but he’s holding back and looks like he’s got a broken hand. Oteri back up to his feet, looking like he’s got a second wind as Rigo is fading and not using his left hand. Oteri takes him down, takes Rigo’s back, sinks in a choke. Good fight. Rigo is in serious pain with a messed up left hand.
Brett Oteri wins by submission about halfway through round 2.
FERNANDO RIVERA vs PAT SCHULTZ (Pro 3×5, 190lbs)
Blue: Rivera – Shotokan Academy, Red: Schultz – CCFA

Back standing and both guys getting good shots in. Schultz starting to take control. Schultz lands a bomb and Rivera goes down. One follow up and Rivera is totally dazed and the ref jumps in. After the fight, Scott Rehm comes in the cage and he and Pat Schultz talk a lot of smack to hype a fight.
Pat Schultz wins by KO/TKO at 2:20 of round 1.
BOBBY FAVORS vs JOSH DIEKMAN (Pro 3×5, heavyweight)
Blue: Favors – Independent – 367lbs, Red: Diekman – Wai Kru – 263lbs
Round 1: Diekman low kick. Favors is absolutely enormous but surprisingly composed and keeping a good stance and counter-punching whenever Diekman wades in with an attack. Diekman is faster and landing low kicks. Diekman nice combination lands, but Favors keeps composure and fires back every time, keeping Diekman at bay. Diekman picks his spots to attack, but wary of eating a big one from Favors. My score: 10-9 Diekman.
Round 2: Still a kickboxing match in round 2. Diekman landing low kicks. Still cautious about fully engaging and attacking. Favors getting a few jabs in. Diekman finds an opening and lands a crushing punch to the chin and Favors goes down. Diekman lands a couple shots on the ground for good measure and the ref stops it. Pretty good fight.
Josh Diekman wins by TKO at 3:46 or round 2.

Congrats to Kru Schultz on a badass left jab KO. Looking forward to watching you beat Rehm’s ass into retirement. QUESTION: Does anybody know what the name of the song DAMIEN TRITES came out to? That was a pretty sweet walkout song.
Big Congrats to:
Morecraft-great fight man, I’m looking forward to helping you get ready for Beane.
Brett Oteri-I don’t know you man but I like watching your fights. Very humble guy. Great control of your emotions. The local shows need more guys like you. You’re a great rep for the Lauzon gym.

Sorry again to anybody who bought tix off me and didn’t get to see me fight. It’s been five years and i was PUMPED! My opponent, Alex Camarao, pulled out literally about 20 minutes prior to our match with no explanation from him or his team leaving me with a huge case of fight blue balls. Hope everything is ok with Alex.
Great show by CFX!

I’d like to make a big shout out to Scott Lockhart and Mark Griffen, both of these warriors came prepared to fight on saturday. Scott’s opponent Alex Camarao, took this fight as a last minute replacement and killed himself to make weight, but unfortunately the cut make him ill the next day. I’d like to make that fight happen in April. Mark Griffen you are a true gentleman and an amazing classy dude, you are what MMA fighters should be all about. Mark’s opponent Kenny Hazzrd came to the venue to fight, but came up lame with a back injury and was unable to answer the bell. Another fight i’d like to make happen in April. Again thanks to both Scott and Mark for the classy way that you handled a bad situation.

Much respect to everyone who fought!! Seemed Like a lot of mismatches to me, would anyone agree? Enjoyed The morecraft and beane exchange in the ring, as well as the Schultz and “some cigarette smoking bumb” (pat’s quote not mine) exchange. Solid fighters fighting cant argue that, just a little to predictable for my liking. I would love to see a guy like Paul Curtin fight someone good so we can see what a beast he is to me that would be worth paying for. Looking forward to Morecraft-Beane, That is what I’m talking about right there!!! GREAT FIGHT between 2 Animals. Dunn-Mello Should be Awesome!! Congrats to Barrington Douse on a big win over Robbie Leroux. Props to Robbie for a tough fight. You definitely have a bright future in the sport. Also, like to mention that Wai Kru is a class act team. Barrington has now won 3 of his last 4 fights since joining American Fight Team. His only loss in his last 4 fights was at 145lbs., which is his walking weight. Keep an eye on him at 135lbs.
We had a great time at the show. Great production. Great fans. Great vendors. Great FOOD and BEER. lolol
But I do agree with JFITTS, there were a lot of mismatches and its clear what was going on with the match making. The first several fights lasted no more than 2 minutes each. I think the match making is the real clear problem with an overall good show. If you are going to manage fighters and be a promoter/match maker just don’t make it so obvious that you are bias. If I was a fighter or trainer I would just be very careful in dealing with the show. Not trying to be overly critical, but just saying what everyone thinks already. Just be fair and honest to all fighters, trainers and schools.

Why fighters take fights then pull out the week of the fight(even day of)so often is something I’ll never understand. If u don’t want the fight just don’t take it in the 1st place. No shame in that.Personally I’d far rather have people think I can’t fight than that I’m a coward.

I’m not saying u r a coward,Pete. For 1 thing this is a thread on CFX, in which my buisness partner Scott had his opponent pull out a couple days before the fight, then the guy who jumped in refused to fight while the show was going on.
I was thinking of them more than the 4 or 5 guys that pulled out on me.Even then I’m not saying that the guys who pulled from CFX r cowards, maybe they have legit reasons.
But as u say I’m a trainer so I know guys get hurt and pull out.I’d guess my guys do from maybe 10% of the fights they take. But it seems to happen to guys we’re scheduled to fight more like 60% of the time.
Shit happens, guys get the flu whatever, but stuff like broken hands the week of a fight makes little sense.

Hey Jay you cant keep a good guy down but I publicly am about to dissapear. You will hear from me normaly dude but not many other people will.
I may never get to see Dolloff fight again because I am leaving myself until i feal like I diserve to be in there and know I can domminate. Jay Dolloff is the man and I will miss seeing him on a monthly to sometimes weekly haha basis(we fight alot)…but anyway I’ll miss you bro.
It’s been great fighting for everyone and when I make my return people will be impressed and the fealing of fear will begin to arise. See everyone when I see em.,.

Benoit – I was done after that I promise, lol…congrats on the marriage, I hope you have a long life together, but you’re still a large toolbag…also, there’s an (e) at the end of my name, Benoyt.
Rick – Your show is great that’s why I always go to them, (like tomorrow night Campbell VS Stevens) I just don’t like the ropes. I think it’s great for the fans because you have a clear view to the fights, but for the fighters, it can be unfair at times…all the restarting in the middle of the ring, meh…(Grandmaison VS Bermudez)…Idk if you guys are still thinking about the cage or what but i’ll fight him in a cage.

i’m wondering if you’ve ever “beaten anyone up” or just take them down and sit in their guard…just a thought dude…FYI its not a a shot at you to say that damien beat you…i thought he won the fight, as did half the people there…i’m entitled to my own opinion, and you’re entitled to yours…thats what happens with decisions…also, if fighting me would be easy, i’d love to prove you wrong.
not a good fight for you, sweetheart.
