Global Fight League is proud to announce two “Featured Fights” for their upcoming card GFL 6 entitled “Prevail” on March 13th, 2010 from the 3000 seat Nashua High School South Gymnasium in Nashua NH. Global is also proud to announce that Proceeds from the Prevail event will be donated to the Nashua High School Athletic department.
In a highly anticipated return to the cage, GFL 135lb Bantam weight Champion Matt Smith returns home to defend his title in front of 3000 Smitty’s Barn fans! Smith is a 4-time NH state wrestling champion, 4 time New England champion, 2-time National champion and former Div. 1 Penn State Wrestler under Josh Koscheck. Since dropping down a weight class from 145lbs Smith has yet to face defeat at his new Bantamweight. Smith is currently on a four fight win streak and looks to defend his 135lb belt for the first time after capturing it in the first ever GFL title fight this past summer as he stopped Christian “lil papi” Rivera in his tracks while on his own 2 fight win streak to become GFL’s first ever Champion.
Challenging Smith for his coveted title will be Pedro Gonzalez Newly of team Dragon Warrior. Pedro’s 3-2 record is nothing to balk at as he’s fought some of New Englands best as he took 145lb Full Force Champion Chris Grandmaison deep into the 3rd round finally succumbing to a submission but earning much deserved respect by taking it to one of New England’s top fighter’s in GFL’s first main event back in 08. Following his fight with Grandmaison, Pedro fought fellow Renzo Gracie fighter Sean Ratcliffe and submitted him in the second frame of a 3-rnd fight via guillotine. Recently, Gonzalez was featured as a main event in the AFO against previously unbeaten Franklin Isabel. Gonzalez deposed of Isabel quickly in the first round also via guillotine.
In the Second Featured fight the Vacant 145lb feather weight Championship will be on the line as Brazilian Rodrigo Almeida 4-1 of Team Wai Kru returns after a dominating performance in GFL 4 which propelled him to a title shot at his new weight of 145lbs. Almeida, ranked 9th in the Northeast at 155lbs looks to stake his claim as the top 145lber in the area. Almeida ripped through 4 fights losing only to top 155lb fighter Calvin Kattar last year and has since relocated from BMAC to the highly regarded Wai Kru team out of Alston, Ma. Almeida announced at GFL 4 that he has made a new home with the GFL and looks to fight whom ever they have for him in search of becoming the top 145lber in the area. GFL 6 will be his first route to his new goal of becoming the first ever Global Fight League 145lb Champion.
Justin Homsey also 4-1 out of Team Renzo Gracie in Derry, NH at Tim Barchard’s Professional Martial Arts Academy will challenge Almeida for the 145lb title. The 6th ranked fighter in the northeast brings an impressive resume to the table as well. Homsey, A very accomplished wrestler out of both Timberlane HS one of the nations most successful wrestling programs, and Plymouth State college one of New Englands top collegiate wrestling teams also sports a Purple belt in BJJ under Renzo Gracie. Homsey recently defeated fellow purple belt Joe Brennen of Team Extreme Via Darce’ choke at GFL 3 extending his win streak. Homsey’s most notable win though came at “The Awakening” when he became the only fighter ever to stop Aguilano Brandao 8-3 overall via strikes from back mount.
