GFL “Proving Grounds” Preview

GFL “Proving Grounds” takes place on Friday, February 5 at the Wonderland Ballroom in Revere, MA. It features a modest price tag of only $25 for general admission tickets, with the highest ticket price at only $35.

They also feature a main event between veteran GFL Fighter Bill Jones, and he’s set to take on Lee Metcalf. Jones is coming off a tough fight with Tateki Matsuda, a fight in which he won by DQ. He looks to get back on track against the very tough Lee Metcalf. Lee is fresh off a win over BJJ black belt Cesario de Souza (though some databases have the fight listed in 2007, it was actually 2009) and he’ll have a pretty big size advantage and will have the advantage standing up. Both guys are exciting, and neither ever take a step back, so this one should be filled with a ton of action.

Former title challenger Christian “Lil Papi” Rivera also returns to action when he takes on Yann Oliveira, who is making his debut. On paper, this looks like a tough first fight for Yann, but he’s the first fighter I’ve seen represent Dan Bonnell’s Prime FC fight team, and I doubt he’d put his guy in there if he wasn’t ready.

The rest of the card is filled with newer fighters, and it looks like the GFL is going back to their roots on this show. They came out with a show called “The Harvest” previously, and many of their current headliners came from that show. Is the next Scott Nichols or Chris Fissette making his debut this weekend? Only time will tell.

Here is the full card:

I never post on here, but I just wanted to say I have total respect for Bill Jones. He’s a class act, a great guy, and a VERY tough competitor! Nobody likes to win with any sort of controversy clouding it over… I’m just there to fight and whatever happens, happens… So to whoever was in your corner talking shit to me please grow up. I have no control over the situation. I was ready to go for the second round! So again, Bill your a great guy we got to talk before and after the fight. And your team all seemed like good people too except for the one or two people that felt like they had to disrespect me.. As you could tell, I was not happy with a win like that. But, it is what it is….

Good Night of fights. Some good up and coming fighters. Isnt this the second fight in a row that Bill Jones has been in controversy. The Tateki fight he was getting killed on the ground and then gets a forearm/elbow and Tateki is DQ’d then when everyone is booing Bill Jones is jumping around like he was mad till he realized he had to play up being hurt and all the sudden couldnt stand. Last night he got caught in a tight armbar at the end of round 1, he could barely move his arm and was complaining so the doctor looked at it and stopped it. Then when the doc stopped the fight he was swinging is “hurt”arm around like crazy. I have talked to Bill on numerous occasions and he seems like a great guy. His in cage antics are growing old though.

On another note that Lorenzo kid is a freak. He is going to be a tough fight for anyone

First i would like to say sorry for the guy that was clearly out of control. . Sometimes people get out of control its hard for us to keep all of our fans in line but we try. Lee you are great guy and I would like to have the chance to meet you again it was a fun fight! I also would like to thank all of the people That came to support me its a great feeling to have such a crowd there for me and my team. Great job every one. It”s an honor to train with all of you. And for every one who was wondering when the round ended i fell into full extension at that point i was nervous i could not continue. As i moved it around i felt that i could continue. I did everything the doctor asked of me and i told him i was fine to fight I truly wanted to finish my fight. It is a bad feeling to go out like that and i am sorry to Lee Metcalf I know you came to fight.
