First, I would like to say that it looks like a little dirt is being thrown on the ref for stopping the fight and that wasnt my intentions in my post so please dont take it the wrong way. Also, I beleive the ref made the right call without a doubt! Amatuer fights are to learn and expierence the sport not at a professional level. For the kid to say he was never going to tap no matter what is just stupid and its a good thing he fought as an amatuer, so he can learn its ok to tap. This isnt one of those things where you go to sleep from a choke and not tapping. This is one of those things where your arm will get broken in two and you will be left seriously injured for a long time missing work, training, etc. Maybe the kid was just putting up a front when he said he would never tap and maybe his arm wasnt at the breaking point but I ask you really think long and hard about never tapping. He wasnt making any progress to escaping as he sat in an armbar for 50 seconds. The fight is over in my opinion. Of course we have seen fights go further than that on TV but those guys are getting paid 6 figure contracts to brawl and can afford a broken leg/arm/ankle. Your getting paid a couple hundered bucks to brawl and I dont think that would cover your gas to and from all the doctor visits. If your not going to tap, save it for a million dollar fight, not for pocket change.

You know what Parker, I forgot that was an ammy fight. I take back what I said and I agree with the stoppage for an ammy fighter. This could all have been avoided if you just tapped, shook the man's hand and went back to the drawing board. Even the best in the world tap to prevent injury. If ya get sidelined for a year because of a broken arm, everyone around you gets better while you lose out on valuable training time.

i would agree w/ the tap or snap approach if this was a pro fight, but in an amateur fight the ref often has to protect the fighters from themselves.

Tyson, was Jay making noises like it was hurting? Yelling, or anything like that?...if not, tap or snap, man...i don't agree with a stoppage just cuz the arm looks like it is about to break, he has three other limbs and verbal tap if he wants, if he doesn't want bye bye arm.

Hey guys.. this is Tyson.. I am the one who put jay in the armbar.. for what it's worth I would def rather win by tap vs ref stoppage.. However , his arm had cracked / popped 4 times and I was def glad the ref stepped in. He was in the armbar for 50 seconds and had the ref not stepped in he could have been hurt pretty bad. The last thing i wanted to do was break his arm or do any real damage. I even talked to Jay after the fight and he said his arm was ok.. but he also said that he never would have tapped no matter how much it hurt lol.. I guess that is why they have refs!

Well Rainman, I'm as flexible as they come but an arm only bends one way. I've known a few guys in my life that have that weird hinged elbow but that only goes so far as well.. In the end the Ref is there to do a job. Some people don't tap or yell due to adrenaline. I'n that case we would want the Ref to step in.. Wouldn't we? Such a fine line, I'm glad I'm not a Ref.

I agree that the Ref is there for your protection, But if the fighter has a free arm and can tap he should have waited for the tap. we all have a certain level of pain tollorence to which eventually we have to either tap or yell in pain before it snaps. Either case is a tap, verbal or phisical. Maybe Jay just has more tollerence an he's very flexible.

I was backstage with him after he fought. He said his arm was fine, and could not understand why the fight had been called to a stop. In his word's " I never tapped and my arm is fine". His team then told him, The ref was "just looking out for him".
so, yeah, it must have looked bad to the ref and maclean has to be a tough customer for his arm to have been feeling that and not have tapped out.
 Again, congrats to Dan Meegan.

I would like to hear from Jay Maclean or someone that trains with him regarding that armbar. Is he ok? Reason why I ask is because the ref stopped that fight not because of tapout, but because of how the armbar looked. For a ref to TKO over an armbar, I can imagine it must of been bad! Maclean is either a really tough kid or the ref has a weak stomach ;)
